Josh Lawrence "Lost Works"
catalog: PR8194A
release date: February 15, 2019
With the music of Josh Lawrence's third album on Posi-Tone, "Triptych," we are trying something different. The three three-movement suites will each be released individually as digital/streaming EPs prior to the album's March 29th release.
Today is the release of the first suite, "Lost Works," which Lawrence premiered live at the 2018 Winter Jazzfest in New York City. This three-movement suite is composed as a eulogy for the first three paintings of Vasily Kandinsky’s “Composition” series which were labeled “Degenerate Art” by the German Nazi Party, confiscated from the Bauhaus, and ultimately destroyed during World War II. Lawrence was drawn to this narrative seeing the parallels between the rise of Nazism in the early 20th century and the resurgence nationalist authoritarianism in our own time. Lawrence is hopeful in the power of art to survive the darkest chapters of history and illuminate our path towards the future.
