The traveling musician who helped to introduce the oud into jazz, satisfies his dream of Indian music and invites the famous percussionist Zakir Hussain to share some French stages in duet.The symbiosis is quite obvious but a color is missing : a wind instrument. Dhafer Youssef then summons another "soul mate" : the Turkish clarinet player Hüsnü Şenlendirici. The trio sketches in concert the raw material of "Sounds Of Mirrors". The recording starts in Bombay, then in Istanbul where Eivind Aarset, the aerial jazz guitarist from Norway, joins the adventure. On retrouve aujourd'hui Dhafer Youssef qui, avec la sortie de son nouvel album Sounds of Mirrors, assouvit son rêve de musique indienne, en un album qui invente un monde sonore saisissant de beauté. Le vocaliste et oudiste tunisien Dhafer Youssef a toujours su s’entourer des meilleurs instrumentistes. Après avoir eu comme sidemen Mark Guiliana, Tigran Hamasyan, Nils Petter Molvaer et nombre d’autres solistes inspirés, le voici entouré d’une nouvelle et rutilante équipe pour présenter le répertoire de son prochain album Sounds of Mirrors. Quand à 19 ans Dhafer Youssef découvre la musique indienne à Vienne, où il étudie la musique classique, l’initiation fait l’effet d’un émerveillement et d’une révélation. Les sonorités hindoues touchent au coeur de l’âme musicale de Dhafer : « J’étais à la fois émerveillé et convaincu qu’un jour le jouerai avec des légendes de la musique indienne… », se rappelle, trente ans plus tard, le compositeur tunisien. Aujourd'hui, le musicien voyageur qui a contribué à introduire l’oud dans le jazz, assouvit son rêve de musique indienne et invite, dans un premier temps, le célèbre percussionniste Zakir Hussain à partager quelques scènes françaises en duo. La symbiose est au rendez-vous mais il manque une couleur : un instrument à vent. Dhafer Youssef convoque alors une autre « âme soeur » : le clarinettiste turc Hüsnü Şenlendirici. Le trio esquisse en concert la matière première du 12 titres « Sounds Of Mirrors ». L’enregistrement débute à Bombay, puis se poursuit à Istanbul où Eivind Aarset, l’aérien guitariste jazz en provenance de Norvège, rejoint l’aventure inédite. Car le disque qui, à l’origine, était un hommage à Zakir Hussain et au tabla prend alors une direction inattendue. « J’ai senti que, partant d’un socle culturel indien, nous pouvions aller vers un propos plus universel... Cet enregistrement m’a fait l’effet d’une ode à l’amitié et à la fraternité. Quand nous jouions ensemble, j’avais la nette sensation que des âmes soeurs se reflétaient. D’où le titre de l’album : « Sounds Of Mirrors », raconte Dhafer. De fait, l’album mixé au studio Nilento de Göteborg (Suède) connaît quelques moments en apesanteur durant lesquels quatre musiciens semblent se tenir dans un même souffle. Dès l’introductif « Humankind » – superbe climat méditatif coloré d’orientalisme léger – la voix de tête de Dhafer Youssef rejoint la clarinette pour ne faire qu’un. Plus loin, avec « Ruby Like Wine » et « Like Dust I May Rise », Dhafer affirme encore son talent pour établir une atmosphère rêvée avec une réelle économie de notes. Où les nappes célestes d’Eivind Aarset font merveilles. « Pour moi, c’est un disque plus méditatif, plus spirituel et plus facile d’accès que le précédent, « Diwan Of Beauty and Odd ». Mais attention ! Ici, rechercher une forme de paix profonde et de sagesse n’a rien de la démarche religieuse », précise Dhafer Youssef. OEuvre de la maturité musicale excellence, la voix se met en retrait au bénéfice d’une musique qui se déploie, épanouie. Emergent alors toutes les finesses de la composition et le talent du soliste. Si la colonne vertébrale du disque tient en 5 titres contemplatifs (dont certains évoquent parfois les utopies ambient de Jon Hassell), le goût de Dhafer Youssef pour le groove ne se dément jamais. Chez lui, les rythmes impairs sonnent comme des pulsations paires : un irrépressible « drive » donne à coup sûr l’envie de battre le tempo – en particulier sur « Dance Layan Dance » (en clin d’oeil à sa fille), « Journey in Bergama », « Nasikhabhushani » ou encore l’entraînant « Chakkaradaar ». Place aux timbres précis des tablas de Zakir Hussain, conjugués au oud en liberté de Dhafer. « Avec l’âge, on n’a plus besoin de se justifier musicalement », dit-il dans un sourire. Une aubaine pour l’auditeur qui assiste ainsi, au fil du renouvellement permanent de Dhafer Youssef, à de nouvelles rencontres comme autant de couleurs musicales jamais imaginées. TUNISIA: Anouar Brahem- Blue Maqams (ECM 2017)

Released on the occasion of Anouar Brahems 60th birthday, Blue Maqams offers many reasons to celebrate. Recorded in New Yorks Avatar Studios in May 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher, it brings the Tunisian oud master together with three brilliant improvisers: the Maqams of the title refers to the Arabic modal music system, rendered kind of blue by the jazz players. For Anouar Brahem and Dave Holland the album marks a reunion: they first collaborated 20 years ago on the very widely-acclaimed Thimar album. Brahem meets Jack DeJohnette for the first time here, but Holland and DeJohnette have been frequent musical partners over the last half-century beginning with ground-breaking work with Miles Davis their collaborations are legendary. British pianist Django Bates also rises superbly to the challenge of Brahems compositions. And Anouar in turn is inspired to some of his most outgoing playing.

The oud-the 11-string, fretless, acoustic relative of the lute so central to the culture of the Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean-is inextricably tied to tradition, more than 5,000 years of it. But in the hands of Dhafer Youssef, one of the most highly respected and influential virtuosi of the instrument in the world, the oud takes a giant leap into the future. For more than two decades, Youssef has paid his respects to the ancient legacy of the oud while integrating its melodious, robust and resonant-but simultaneously delicate tones-with modern sounds and sensibilities, transcending genre and defying the expected. On his new album Birds Requiem (available now on OKeh Records) Youssef has created his most breathtakingly powerful work to date, a suite of 11 interconnected compositions that, he says, were "constructed as music for an imagined movie."

Recorded primarily in Gothenburg, Sweden, with additional recording in Istanbul, Birds Requiem features Youssef on oud and vocals, clarinetist Hüsnü Senlendirici, trumpeter Nils-Petter Molvaer, Aytaç Dogan on the zither-like kanun, Eivind Aarset handling electric guitar parts and electronics, pianist Kristjan Randalu, double bassist Phil Donkin and drummer Chander Sardjoe.

Youssef envisions the entirety of Birds Requiem as a score for a film that exists only in his creative mind. "I imagine the movie being about two entities," he says, "myself and my permanent search for a wandering soul. It symbolizes the idea of the disappearance of the body and the wandering of the soul. This idea is also reflected in the image of the birds depicted in the songs and in the album's pictures."

For Youssef, Birds Requiem marks the continuation of a journey into the possibilities of the oud that began during his childhood in Tunisia, where he was born in 1967. He discovered jazz as a youth and knew as he explored his instrument and composition that his lot in life would be the fusion of Eastern and Western styles into something wholly exhilarating and new. He relocated to Europe in the '90s and his reputation as an artist who blurred the lines between world music, jazz, classical and even contemporary genres such as funk grew exponentially with each new release. Albums such as 2002's Electric Sufi and 2006's Divine Shadows redefined the role of the oud in modern music, and Youssef's compositions, which also often featured his impassioned vocals, have been hailed as cutting-edge. He has received many honors for his work including a nomination for the BBC Music Awards For World Music in 2006. "I've always been in a permanent search for new sonorities," he says. "Even at the age of 6, I was curious. I discovered the echo of my voice and its resonances. Later, I experienced the undulations and the resonances of sounds that we find in Electric Sufi."

Birds Requiem is a culmination of all that he's accomplished previously, taking Dhafer Youssef's music to the next level. But he prefers not to overanalyze it all. "I sincerely think it is hard to succeed in describing the mood in this album or the others," he says. "I am convinced that its essence can only be felt while listening. It solicits the participation of the listener and the audience. Each one can feel it according to his own background or experience. Birds Requiem continues my search."

Jeri Brown is pleased to announce as part of a spectacular tour, First Ladies of Jazz, her appearance at the upcoming Carthage Jazz Festival in Tunisia with her longtime Paris group The Jeri Brown Quartet. Jazz lovers will connect with this event based on the classic Dizzy Gillespie tune A Night in Tunisia. Jeri Brown is looking forward to the performance plus the vocal improvisation master classes that she will conduct. During the concert Jeri will perform a collection of modern jazz classics, including compositions by Dizzy Gillespie, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Djavan, Herbie Hancock, Avery Sharpe, Tania Maria, Sonny Rollins, and Kenny Wheeler in addition to her own originals. About Jeri Brown – Jeri Brown has earned a reputation as one of jazz' most outstanding “artistic" vocalists. The French publication Jazz Magazine has hailed her as being one of the top 50 jazz vocalists of all time. Brown's illustrious international performance and recording career over a 20-year span has consistently conveyed her artistic signature.  Ms. Brown's recordings and performances have filled the historical spectrum of classic American songbook themes, original jazz compositions and contemporary world themes with intense vocal improvisations, and include collaborations with diverse, legendary jazz artists including such musicians as Leon Thomas, Betty Carter, Oscar Brown Jr., John Hicks, Grady Tate, Kirk Lightsey, John B. About The Jeri Brown Quartet –  Jeri Brown’s high-power performance group expresses a wide musical range from traditional jazz to free improvisational music including modern jazz repertoire. Pianist Jobic Le Masson was born in France in 1968 and started his musical education at the age of seven at the conservatory. At age 16 he moved to the US and attended Greenwich High School in Connecticut where he studied music theory and composition. In 1987 he attended Berklee School of Music and returned to Paris after graduating in 1990. Jobic is involved in many projects as composer, arranger and performer, and has appeared regularly as musical director of Jeri Brown’s acclaimed Paris based group Jeri Brown Quartet with Peter Giron and John Betsch since 2006. American jazz drummer John Betsch began on percussion at age nine, and attended Fisk University, Berklee College of Music and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.  After playing in organ trios, he released an album as a leader, Earth Blossom, in 1975. That year he moved to New York where he played with Paul Jeffrey, Max Roach, Jeanne Lee, Henry Threadgill and others. Between 1977 and 1979 he joined Abdullah Ibrahim’s ensemble, and from 1980 to 1982 he was with Archie Shepp’s band. Since 1985 he has lived in Europe, playing with Jim Pepper, Mal Waldron, and Steve Lacy to name a few. As the drummer on Jeri Brown’s award-winning April in Paris CD of 1996, Betsch has continued to perform with Jeri in many events/concerts including collaborative projects with Kirk Lightsey and Erik Truffaz. Bassist Peter Giron, born in Bronx, New York in 1952, studied bass, viola and violin at Princeton College of Music in New Jersey and began his professional career in local jazz bands as a bassist at the age of 16. He performed Broadway shows and New York stage events with various musicians including several tours with Charles Earland and John Purcell. Established in France for over ten years, Peter has remained active on the international jazz scene, where he has performed and recorded alongside musicians such as Archie Shepp, Kurt Elling, Dave Liebman, and Kirk Lightsey. He has been a vital member of the Jeri Brown Quartet since 2008.  He has taught at the Regional Conservatory, Montpellier and now officiates at the American School of Modern Music. Drummer Ichiro Onoe was born in 1957 in Tokyo. He studied drums at Berklee College of Music in Boston. With performances in Japan he accompanied such artists as Ron Carter, Norman Simmons Makoto Ozone and Yasuko Agawa. A Paris resident, Ichiro has performed with Bobby Few, Frank Lacy, and many others. This year Ichiro joins the Jeri Brown Quartet. Recent Jeri Brown News –  Jeri has just wrapped up a successful artist-in-residency at the famous Musician's Institute in Hollywood. With successful performances in February and March throughout California including famed Catalina Jazz Bar & Grill in Los Angeles, Ms. Brown’s final tour event at Target Sundays Series was held at California African American Museum to a warm and excited audience. She was also able to make a guest radio visit on the popular L.A. blog radio show hosted by The Oracle. "That felt so real. Growing up in the metropolis of Tunis, Nabil Khemir was captivated by the enchanting sounds of North African Egyptian music and it's rich cultural heritage. This inspirational and aural excitement propelled Nabil Khemir to yearn for a unique musical instrument and voice. On his ninth birthday Nabil got his wish, receiving a musical lute to explore the shapes and sounds that this young boy was hearing. Quickly adapting to this majestic instrument, this child prodigy begin playing pubic performances, thus continuing to show great musical promise. Not one to waste time, Nabil continued to practice and learn on his own, as well as from the great recordings of Western jazzmen such as George Benson; John McLaughlin; John Coltrane and Pat Metheny to name a few. In addition to learning from his favorite recording's, Nabil took his educational wishes a step further when he sought out the famous lute player Ali Sriti for several private master classes. In 2004, Nabil decided to create a hybrid instrument which would allow him to share his true musical voice and vision that he was hearing deep within his soul. So after several years of research and development, Nabil's artistic vision paid off when he completed his one of a kind double neck lute/guitar instrument which he aptly named, "RayJam". This unique instrument, allows Nabil Khemir to explore and share his musical playfulness by having an electric lute and electric guitar within grasp at a moments notice. Roni Ben-Hur, Santi Debriano-Our Thing (Motema 2012)

The idea and inspiration for Our Thing was born in the summer of 2011 within the walls of the beautiful Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Sardaigne, a 12^th century church atop the tiny village of Saint Cezaire, France, where guitarist/composer Roni Ben-Hur and bassist/composer Santi Debriano co-lead a much-lauded annual jazz camp.  This duo's eagerly awaited annual concert has become the centerpiece event of Festi-Jazz, the festival held in this quaint French village each summer, founded, curated and conducted by Ben-Hur and Debriano with Fred Rouquier and the Festi Jazz Committee.  Our Thing producer Timothy L. Porter was amongst the sold-out crowd of locals and internationals this particular evening (with a portion of the overflowing audience seated under the stars on the steps of the chapel and in the parking area).  He sets the scene in the album's liner notes, "as the concert got underway, and indeed throughout the mesmerizing performance, the audience was enthralled, and their excitement as well as our own fueled the resolve of Ted Sanella, my co-producer, and me to share the experience more broadly by arranging for the recording and release of this debut album documenting the long time collaboration of Roni Ben-Hur and Santi Debriano."

TUNISIA: Tunisie. Jazz à Carthage by Tunisiana reprend après une année de pause forcée

La 7e édition de Jazz à Carthage by Tunisiana aura lieu à Gammarth du 5 au 15 avril. Cet événement couru des mélomanes reprend donc après une année de pause forcée pour cause de révolution tunisienne.

Cet événement artistique est organisé par Scoop Organisation, avec le soutien des ministères de la Culture et du Tourisme.

Mourad Mathari, directeur général de Scoop Organisation, vient de dévoiler la programmation de cette nouvelle édition. La participation tunisienne sera marquée par la présence de deux jeunes voix de la nouvelle génération : Badiaâ Bouhrizi et Bendirman, deux voix engagées qui étaient déjà connues avant la révolution du 14 janvier.

Cette participation tunisienne jugée trop faible, M. Mathari la justifie par le fait que les projets de spectacle de jazz tunisiens n’ont pas été présentés dans les délais et que ce festival a un caractère international. Cette édition verra la participation de jazzmen du Maroc, de Palestine, d’Italie, d’Espagne, du Brésil, de Suisse, du Mali et des Etats Unis.

Comme les précédentes éditions, Jazz à Carthage by Tunisiana 2012 est ouverte à des mélanges subtils d’influences musicales diverses, allant du jazz au blues, en passant par le rock, la samba, la pop ou le folk, afin de répondre aux exigences d’un public lui aussi hétéroclite et cosmopolite.

Parmi les têtes d’affiche, on annonce Otis Taylor, dont le blues perpétue les souffrances du peuple noir, la grande chanteuse espagnole, Inna Modja, qui défend la cause des femmes africaines, ou encore Radiodervish, chantant pour la paix.

Il n’y aura donc pas de grosses têtes d’affiche, mais le public aura tout de même droit à de la bonne musique.

SPAIN, Cordoba: Afro-Mediterranean Jazz @ Casa Árabe with Sinouj

Sinouj toma las raíces de su música de las diferentes tradiciones del Magreb y de Oriente, fusionadas con la música africana, el funk y el jazz. 

Casa Árabe organiza el 22 de febrero un concierto del grupo Sinouj, cuya originalidad se basa en la diversidad de orígenes geográficos (Túnez, España, Nigeria e Italia) y musicales de los componentes del grupo.
La banda actuará el miércoles 22 de febrero en la sede de Casa Árabe a las 20.00 horas y la entrada es libre hasta completar el aforo, según informa la organización.
El grupo actuará un día antes, el 21 de febrero, en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid, donde las entradas se agotaron pocas horas después de ponerse a disposición del público.

"PHRYGIAN ISTIKHBAR" features compositions of pianist Wajdi Cherif which are a mixture of jazz, Tunisian classical and folkloric musical traditions and rhythms. You can hear arabic percussions such as "Darbouka" or "Bendir" played by the distinguished Tunisian percussion player "Habib Samandi" on "El Gasba" or "Phrygian Istikhbar". "Voyage", the opening tilte begins with a very soulful introduction played piano solo on arabic modes and scales, soon followed by the melody that leads to the masterful improvisations of percussion player Habib Samandi. "Blurred Vision" presents a bass solo by Diego Imbert that goes in perfect harmony with the fantastic arabic rhythms played by Habib...
