“Conversation #9 – Targeted” is the latest release of the series of collaborations with like-minded felow musicians initiated by Swiss drummer Florian Arbenz. While the presence of the renowned American saxophonist Greg Osby is not new on these series, Dutch Hammond impressive organist Arno Krijger came on board for the first time, and it must be acknowledged that he succeeds greatly in making his mark.
Swiss composer and drummer Florian Arbenz’s Conversations series continues with “Ablaze”, a new album where is joined by British tuba musician Oren Marshall, Austrian saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig, Swiss pianist Michael Arbenz and Cuban trumpet player Jorge Vistel.
As always his drumming spans a wide spectrum of tonalities and rhythms, ranging from organic, free-flowing beats to strong strokes, which offers this all-star multinational gathering of talents support and vitality.
Right from the start British tuba player Oren Marshall showcases his prowess giving strength and heart to the interaction. On the opening track, “Catch Me If You Can,” the tuba’s rich, resonant tones support Florian Arbenz‘s inventive drumming and the vivacious free discussion between the trumpet and saxophone.
“Rivulets” starts off gently with the tuba soloing an amazing “throat singing”-like intro, followed by saxophone, and trumpet playing in unison, building further into a jazzy blues crescendo with all players dancing gleefully, before making room for exuberant saxophone and trumpet solos. The lyrical highlight of the set is “Choral,” a gorgeous impressionistic work in which the melodic piano unfolds with all its splendour.
In full force “The Mirror” follows, the entertaining melodic line sustained by tuba introducing thrilling saxophone and trumpet solos. Freedom Dance present on Arbenz’s previous albums, gets new clothes reaching a big band quality full of surprises with Puschnig playing hojok (a Korean wind instrument). On “Wild flower,” a minimalist velvety ballad with moments of brilliance from Vistel’s trumpet, the pianist Michael Arbenz shines once more.
The free-form “Insight Straight” rounds up the seven-piece performance with a creative tour de force in which all the instruments combine their creative forces to produce an amalgam of unexpected sonorities. Strongly advised for jazz lovers open to a “burning” artistic adventure.
Between world, jazz, and classical music, the singer Noga announces her new album LEV for the month of April 2023
Baiju Bhatt & Red Sun(India/Switzerland) Album: People of Tomorrow Label: Neuklang
Baiju Bhatt & Red Sun
Nouvel album People of Tomorrow

Baiju Bhatt is back with his group Red Sun for a third album, People of Tomorrow, scheduled for 10/28/2022 on the Neuklang label, which crosses musical borders even further.
Four years after the release of the singular Eastern Sonata, which mixed with great playfulness and talent the influences of a fantasized India and Western jazz-rock, the Indo Swiss violinist and composer Baiju Bhatt does it again and insists by offering us an album yet more ambitious and powerful, endowed with a deep musical richness, harmonious and subtle.
One foot in the East and one foot in the West, the violinist Baiju Bhatt achieves with People of Tomorrow a daring mix between jazz-rock and Indian music, between tradition and modernity.
Surrounded by the transalpine quintet Red Sun and by guest guitarist Nguyên Lê, Baiju Bhatt & Red Sun form an alchemical group where the different sounds of each blend in perfect harmony. The five of them erase borders and mix cultures in a great multicolored, virtuoso and harmonious fireworks display. A fiery game with exemplary rhythmic placement, which becomes romantic and ethereal.
Florian Arbenz’s new Conversation album called Vulcanized reveals to be a fluid interaction of undeniable virtuosity between three well established artists. What a joy to hear Maikel Vistel and François Moutin bright combination of saxophone and bass and Florian Arbenz’s compelling taste and movement. Besides the five originals we can listen to three inventive fresh takes on well-known compositions of Thelonious Monk, Joe Zawinul and Bill Evans. Last minute changes to the band members makes for a rough-around-the-edges surprise that rejuvenates pumping up the creative juices. The change is exactly what the album needs: to elevate the sound to authentic mastery, the likes of which the jazz fan is looking for. The perfect setting for consuming this music is fireside, with eyes shut, and all senses tuned to the vivid vision that this work imagines. Hackensack is a breakout, powerful piece that entrances the listener with high-energy notes and fast-paced journey through the musician’s mind. The nearly six-minute masterpiece is zany and energetic, and calls the listener to come along for the bumpy ride and enjoy not the destination but the sights along the way. In contrast, Scarlet Woman drags the attention into the piece with a soft intro that quickly becomes a sultry, warm piece filled with musical melodrama. A special mention of the introspective A Soothing Thrill infused with a range of poetic, mysterious layers. Overall, the arrangements are cohesive yet leaving enough space to all three musicians to showcase their abilities . The feat that was this production by the trio was nothing short of impressive, and creates much promise for Florian Arbenz’s future creative encounters. Florian Arbenz on Bandcamp
Florian Arbenz(Switzerland)-RhenosAlbum: Conversation #2 & #3 On Conversation #2 & #3 Swiss drummer Florian Arbenz brings on board vibraphonist Jim Hart and bassist Heiri Känzig, two prolific artists with a broad experience on the contemporary jazz scene. The synergy between musicians is clearly working either in a duo or trio format. Florian Arbenz, the project’s creator, known for experimenting with new sonic paths and techniques, continues to try out new creative interactions with his new collaborators in dialogue. The result is a fascinating universe of rhythms in multiple forms with vibraphone and drums engaged in a mutual exchange of creativity, obvious on the ensemble of tracks. Appreciated is the sheer energy of “Evidence” or the sophisticated “Between Times”. With Heiri Känzig joining in, the conversation goes three ways, reaching an inventive fluidity weaved by all three voices blending naturally into a flow of spatial harmony crossed by intense yet subtle drumming. From the multi-lingual border region of Ticino in Switzerland, guitarist Matteo Finali brings Final Step with their 5th album release, Disconnections. To be organised neatly on your shelf marked ‘jazz fusion’, the group display a shared passion for that post-Miles brand of electric jazz which unites rock, funk, blues and ethnic music. “At a time when everyone is seemingly ‘connected’ all the time via their computers and phones, we want to bring a much-needed jolt of energy, reminding people of the importance of disconnecting and enjoying the spirit of live music.” Their 2017 release Live at Estival Jazz was recorded when the band opened for Mike Manieri’s latest iteration of Steps Ahead at one of Switzerland’s biggest festivals; this 2021 outing sees them back in the studio, adding an extra layer of slick production, colourful effects and bite-sized interludes to the proceedings. The music is passionate, rhythmic and unashamedly funky, whilst displaying a compositional creativity that underscores the bandleader’s jazz credentials.

Florian Arbenz & Greg Osby (Switzerland/USA) -Album: Reflections Of The Eternal Line
Two masters: Florian Arbenz(drums, percussion) and Greg Osby(saxophones) delivering a symbiotic dialogue stretched over known boundaries. It’s not free jazz according to definitions but rather a journey they took together exploring new sound paths. A work of freedom and precision altogether inspired by the intricate graphical intersections painted by Stephan Spicher . Florian Arbenz moves from percussive heights to impressionistic, subtle textures, changing tempos weaving unexpected sonorities . Greg Osby is right there at the right moment filling spaces, climbing to high registers, at times playful or ecstatic invoking sacred chants punctuated by colorful gongs that gives a spiritual edge to the composition. Expect the unexpected with these two bright complementing talents.

The collective Who Trio commemorated 20 years of existence in 2018, by starting the project “Strell”, which only now has been committed to record. This was the time considered necessary for their members to achieve the maturity of a collective language necessary to embrace the ambitious enterprise of interpreting the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington in a (re)creative way. The goal was to infuse this rich musical heritage with today’s musical language, exploring the compositions of both historical figures like a mighty wave that allows the trio to surf to new horizons. In this new reading, we find the centrality of the blues, so essential to these two composers, combined with the open spirit of improvisation in the best way we could hope for. Contemporary jazz with deep roots in the Strayhorn/Ellington legacy, played by one of the most inspiring musical chemistries of our time, the remarkable collective interplay of Wintsch, Hemingway & Oester, the WHO trio.

Tim Berne recorded for Intakt Records for the first time in 2019 as the saxophonist in Michael Formanek’s Very Practical Trio with Mary Halvorson. Now the New York saxophonist, composer and bandleader presents a new CD with his ensemble Snakeoil. After five albums this is the first Snakeoil record to be released on Intakt. The band balances the possibilities of composition, improvisation and the tonal possibilities of an acoustic and electric playing jazz band in an unmistakable way. The Fantastic Mrs.10 is one of Snakeoil's most mature and at the same time most edgy CDs.
Guitarist Marc Ducret joins the core quartet of Tim Berne, Matt
Mitchell, Oscar Noriega and Ches Smith. The band’s sound is also influenced by Berne's musician cohort David Torn.
Tim Berne says in the liner notes “I think this is the best one yet. That’s a stupid thing to say, but it’s kind of a culmination. Ches, Matt, Oscar – it’s almost like we always forget what we did the last time out, and that’s a really healthy amnesia. There’s a dedication to moving ahead. They’re truly into it, and it motivates me.”

At any given time in the past few decades, saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, bassist Christian Weber and drummer Michael Griener have been members of genre-defining trios across Europe and the US, proving just how vital jazz is today in its historical form as well as in free playing styles. In the trio Ellery Eskelin, Christian Weber and Michael Griener play free music and traditional jazz. They do not melt down the playing styles, but alternate, contrast and deepen them.
With the new CD The Pearls they present the second studio record after their critically acclaimed CD "Sensations of Tone".
Ellery Eskelin writes in the liner notes:
"In jazz we talk about playing time and playing free. Playing time usually means expressing a steady pulse and playing free usually means not adhering to a steady pulse. Either way there is still the sensation of movement, time. In making this recording I was struck by the ways in which time can simultaneously be so exacting, so malleable and so multi-dimensional. In these performances you’ll hear free improvisations (with no preconceived forms or steady time pulse) as well as renditions of classic compositions from an earlier musical form directly addressing time, Ragtime."

There are countless pieces of music that practically everyone recognises often without knowing where from. The jazz project STING OPERATION has been poaching in this realm for some years, using musical common property as a starting point for unconventional interpretations. For their latest CD, the band have addressed the legendary 1969 music festival Woodstock. This event, surrounded by many myths, initially also influenced jazz musicians (such as Miles Davis). In addition, an astonishing number of jazz, blues and gospel classics were performed at Woodstock. For their new programme Woodstock Jazz, STING OPERATION dissect songs like Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix), Evil Ways (Santana) and One Day At A Time (Joan Baez), then put them together to form new interpretations, rooted in jazz. The operating team: Devi Reith (vocals), Felix Straumann (sax, composition), Matthias Siegrist (guitar), Peter Leuzinger (bass) and Peter Preibisch (drums).Unit Records
for almost 20 years, Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman have been continuously redefining the dialogue between Western and American music, improvisation and composition, tradition and modernity. The most diverse playing attitudes and atmospherics network in the alert reactions of the two players – dance, world-weariness, liberating noise, shrill jumping cascades, the confession of simple beauty. Their latest live release was described by the Frankfurtr Allmeinen Zeitung (FAZ) as one of the "original productions in jazz history". A duo that stands or falls with a special togetherness and a duo that lives from the spectacular playing, the immense technique, the grandiose joy of playing and the art of improvisation. The new CD Time Gone Out, recorded at the Oktaven Audio studio in New York, is a culmination of many years of collaboration. The album shows how her music has freed itself from any reference and plays in radical singularity: between power and restraint, energy and fragility, energie and softness. This precious art speaks in the present about the present, about our time and wanders into a distant, unpredictable future.
