Benny Brydern | A Day in Vienna (feat. Raul Reynoso, John Reynolds & David Jackson)

Classical music and jazz always had a fascination for each other. In the 1930s Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt took on J.S.Bach's famous double violin concerto to swing it Hot Club style. Later Duke Ellington gave Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy a new arrangement and the Klazz brothers took Mozart to Cuba. 1930s swing violinist Benny Brydern and his friends pay homage to the great Mozart,Bach,Schubert,Chopin and Puccini in their version of these classics. Joining Benny Brydern in this all star CD are guitarists John Reynolds and Raul Reynoso, bassist David Jackson and as featured guests Chloe Feoranzo on clarinet, Nick Mancini on vibes and Albert Alva on flute.

Retro swing CD with a hint of Gypsy jazz takes on famous classical melodies by Mozart,Bach,Schubert a.o.

CANADA: -John Heward Quintet: Improvisations (2019)

This quintet was gathered by John Heward to open the Guelph Jazz Festival in September 2014. The recording is from a concert given in Montreal several days before the festival opening. The music is free improvisation: no score, just a resolution to make music. It was a special occasion to have Heward and legendary bassist Barre Philips, both at the age of 80 at the time of the recording, at the core of the quintet. They are joined by a stellar group of long-time Heward collaborators: Lori Freedman, Joe McPhee and Dana Reason. The release of this record is sadly a memorial tribute to John Heward (1934November 2018). Heward, from Montreal, was an internationally recognized percussionist in free jazz as well as a renowned painter and sculptor. He was an influential figure in the development of abstraction and improvisation in both visual art and music.

USA Benjamin Boone - Philip Levine-The Poetry Of Jazz, Volume Two (2019)

The Poetry Of Jazz, Volume Two

Without knowing or planning it, saxophonist/composer Benjamin Boone has spent his life preparing for a collaboration with Philip Levine. Long fascinated by the inherent musicality of the spoken word, Boone crossed paths with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet as fellow professors at California State University, Fresno, and they ended up working closely together in the three years before Levine's death in 2015. Boone and Levine's 2018 release, 'The Poetry of Jazz,' captured a genre-expanding partnership unlike anything else in the jazz canon. 'Volume Two' completes the program with 14 poems and three instrumental compositions by Boone.
'Boone knows where the thing called poetry lives, an ocelot among the waters, a sky-shaped Rain God that flares down upon us. . . He is one of the very few that can lure Phil's poetry-magic and call it out and show it to the world. . . Beyond words up there with the muses. ' --- U. S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera

'Poetry and jazz have long been great partners, but 'The Poetry of Jazz' offers a fresher take, just like Levine's poems give us new, heroic looks at the ordinary lives of the lower-middle class. . . The Poetry of Jazz is a master poet's contribution to the musical genre, one not to be missed. ' --- The Paris Review

Brittany Anjou Enamigo ReciprokatajPianist-composer Brittany Anjou blends the influences of a wide range of jazz and classical piano, and a fascination with the Esperanto language, on her stunning debut Enamiĝo Reciprokataj, set for a February 15 release on Origin Records. A trio album featuring bassist Greg Chudzik and drummer Nicholas Anderson (as well as two tracks with special guests, bassist Ari Folman-Cohen and drummer Ben Perowsky), it also includes 10 original compositions, highlighted by an eponymous five-part suite that showcases both Anjou's ambition and her originality.

Enamiĝo Reciprokataj (pronounced En-ah-mee-joh Reh-sih-pro-kah-tye) translates into English as Reciprocal Love -- or, alternately, as Mutual Breakdown. "[It's] a double entendre about improvisation and the push/pull of relationships," Anjou writes. She also refers to multiple levels of relationships: "It represents the enigma improvisers face to spontaneously fall in love with their instrument/the sound/the situation/each other," she says. "And additionally, to convince an audience to fall in love with their love."

If the concept sounds somewhat esoteric, the music itself is anything but. The album's bookend tracks, "Starlight" and its reprise "Reciproka Elektra," alternate instantly compelling, electronically processed washes with warm and confidently swinging piano-trio melodies. Each of the suite's five parts comprises an expressive, hook-filled tune and improvisation set to a joyful dance of a rhythm, from the whirlwind "Reciprokataj I: Cyrene (Flight of the Butterfly)" to the 5/4 bounce of "Reciprokataj IV: Olive You." Even the grim determination Anjou presents on "Reciprokataj V: Flowery Distress" is offset by Folman-Cohen and Perowsky's irrepressibility.

The album also honors Anjou's most important pianistic influences. Her phrasing and chord voicings channel the respective spirits of Oscar Peterson and Red Garland; in addition, she separates the parts of the suite with songs that directly pay tribute to favorites Ahmad Jamal ("Snuffaluffagas") and McCoy Tyner ("Hard Boiled Soup"). "All of the music celebrates my love affair with great jazz pianists," she says.

Anjou's use of Esperanto is not incidental: With Enamiĝo Reciprokataj, she begins a planned trilogy of albums based on the concepts and structures of world languages. (The next two installments will center on Dagara and Arabic, respectively.) "To me, Esperanto is a romance," she says. "The language mirrors jazz improvisation . . . . Jazz and Esperanto are both contemporary languages of the last century, and both promote intercultural dialogue, democracy, and self-expression."

Brittany Anjou
Brittany Anjou was born in 1984 in Minot, North Dakota, moving to Seattle as a very young child. Her mother was a pianist, flutist, and music teacher, and Brittany began playing piano herself at age five. Her mother also played a lot of jazz recordings around the house, and at 12, hearing a solo by the Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez, Brittany was inspired to begin studying jazz.

As a high school student, she joined and toured with Seattle's Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, meeting and performing with Wynton Marsalis in New York. Attending the Stanford Jazz Workshop at 16, she worked with Clark Terry, who became her idol. It was around that same time that Anjou began composing -- including much of the material that eventually became Enamiĝo Reciprokataj.

Arriving in New York to study music at NYU, Anjou studied with Stefon HarrisTony Moreno, and Sherrie Maricle, as well as with Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer at School for Improvised Music. She also studied classical music in Prague with composer Milan Slavický, and West African gyil music in Ghana with master player Bernard Woma and his protegees. She has since performed in 13 countries on three continents with a number of ensembles including the New York Arabic Orchestra, the Shaggs, Bi TYRANT, and the LARCENY Chamber Orchestra (founding and leading the latter two).

Anjou began performing selections from Enamiĝo Reciprokataj while living in Prague in 2005 and continued honing it thereafter, including in a well-received performance with Bi TYRANT at New York's Zinc Bar during the 2018 Winter Jazz Festival. In the fall of 2018, she returned to Kuwait to teach piano and jazz ensembles as part of a nine-month residency at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center opera house, in an experimental music program, the first of its kind in the country.

Brittany Anjou will perform CD release concerts at the Royal Room, 5000 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, on Sat. 12/29, with Evan Flory-Barnes, b, and Matt Jorgensen, d, plus special guests Rose Rutledge, ss/fl, and Johnny Butler, ts, among others; at Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street, Brooklyn, on Mon. 1/7, with Greg Chudzik, b. and Shirazette Tinnin, d.; and at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, NYC, on Mon. 2/25, with Chudzik and Tinnin. Anjou will also be playing with the Women in Jazz Organization collective at Jazzahead (Schwankhalle), Bremen, Germany on Sat. 4/27

USA: Guitarist Blake Aaron grooves and shakes his way to number one

Guitarist Blake Aaron grooves and shakes his way to number one

“Groovers and Shakers,” featuring saxophonist Darren Rahn, tops the Billboard,
Groove Jazz Music and RadioWave singles charts.

ALISO VIEJO (20 November 2018): It was destined to be a hit from the start and now Blake Aaron’s “Groovers and Shakers” is number one on three national singles charts: BillboardGroove Jazz Music and RadioWave. The first song written and produced collaboratively by the R&B/contemporary jazz guitarist and saxophonist Darren Rahn was rushed into production and shipped to radio stations last summer when Aaron’s label and radio promoter heard the potential for a chart-topper after being sent a demo by the duo. In fact, “Groovers and Shakers” bumped the single Innervision Records had originally scheduled for release by Aaron in late July.

The No. 1 single that will appear on Aaron’s forthcoming sixth album, “Color and Passion,” pays tribute to the people behind the music, the family of fans, the radio programmers and the concert promoters who keep jazz alive and thriving. “Groovers and Shakers” is the fifth single that previews the album following “Riviera Nights,” “VIVID,” “Godfather Brown” and “Summer Ride.” All five have spent time on the Billboard singles chart. In addition to crafting music to complete his own collection, Aaron is in the studio producing material for trumpeter Preston Smith, his labelmate.

Next month, Aaron will perform a holiday show at Herb Alpert’s Vibrato in Los Angeles on December 21. The guitarist is part of a 2019 package tour booking dates now as The Soul Patrol. Aaron will share the stage with vocalist Larry Braggs (Tower of Power, The Temptations) and saxophonist Tom Braxton.  The Soul Patrol debuts with a California run starting on January 10 at Yoshi’s in Oakland, January 12 at Humphrey’s in San Diego and January 13 at Spaghettini in Seal Beach. Aaron opens for seminal urban-jazz saxophonist Najee, a frequent collaboration partner, at the Empress Theatre near San Francisco on February 21.

TUNISIA: Dhafer Youssef - Sounds of Mirror (Anteprima 2018)

Some dreams last a long time. And hunchs that have value of prophecies. The traveling musician who helped to introduce the oud into jazz, satisfies his dream of Indian music and invites the famous percussionist Zakir Hussain to share some French stages in duet. The symbiosis is quite obvious but a color is missing : a wind instrument. Dhafer Youssef then summons another "soul mate" : the Turkish clarinet player Hüsnü Şenlendirici. The trio sketches in concert the raw material of "Sounds Of Mirrors". The recording starts in Bombay, then in Istanbul where Eivind Aarset, the aerial jazz guitarist from Norway, joins the adventure. If If the disk was, at the very beginning, a tribute to Zakir Hussain and tablas, it actually takes an unexpected direction. « I felt that, working with and from an indian cultural base, we could approach a more universal speech... This recording was such a perfect ode to friendship and fraternity ! When we played together, I had this feeling that souls were connected, perfectly explaining the title of the album « Sounds Of Mirrors », tells Dhafer.

USA: Kelly Green Trio-Volume One (feat. Alex Tremblay & Evan Hyde) (2018)

Kelly Green Trio | Volume One (feat. Alex Tremblay & Evan Hyde)
After playing consistently together for a year this trio of highly skilled jazz musicians form a sound together through arrangements and originals that is exciting and unique! We went into the studio after playing together for a year and fresh off our first tour as a trio! Here is the result of hard work and dedication to an art form and a sound. Here is our first review: "Pianist/composer/vocalist Kelly Green released her debut recording, Life Rearranged (Self Produced, 2017) not so long ago by today's output standards. On that recording she revealed herself capable of performing in a variety of formats, with a variety of accompanists. Presently, Green provides us the hopefully-entitled Kelly Green Trio, Volume One, tacitly promising more volumes to come. This is a good thing, because I just figured out the really great thing about Green...well, everything. Mostly, though, Greens voice and singing style are a fortuitous package deal providing beautifully conversational singing with a solid range and certain expression. Volume One is a seven-song collection with six standards and a single, clever original "Daily Lies." The disc opens with a lengthy consideration (9-minutes plus) that is a revelation. Revealed are all of the charms of Green's voice and her orchestral piano style. Bassist Alex Tremblay provides a reliable pulse and excellent solos, as does drummer Evan Hyde . The three easily navigate the Charles Mingus/Joni Mitchell mashup of "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" and the deft be bop of Charlie Parker's "Marmaduke" coupled with Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose," appropriate as both are contrafacts of "I Got Rhythm," but it is Green and her wonderfully sardonic, casual and amiable deliver that makes the day. I am so glad there will be a Volume Two." - C. Michael Bailey, ALL ABOUT JAZZ

USA: Joey Arias, Raven O & Sherry Vine-The Lost Bar D'o Record (2018)

Joey Arias, Raven O & Sherry Vine | The Lost Bar D'o Record
The Lost Bar D'o Record by Joey Arias, Raven O & Sherry Vine © Copyright - Bryce Levan Cushing / Moonfire Tower Records

This is a recording from the stars of the hit downtown NYC show Bar d'O, which was all the rage in the 1990's. The show was a place where the misfits and queers came together to meet in a small bar in Manhattan and hear their idols sing. Arais, Vine & O. It was an amazing week in the spring of 1998, when Joey Arias, Sherry Vine and Raven O came to Philadelphia and performed several shows, produced by the reckless young provocateur MoonFire Tower. Tower had a reputation for being a trouble maker club kid, with a sly wit and sound determination. He was secretly in love with Joey Arias. MoonFire Tower booked the stars of the hottest downtown show Bar d'O for dates in Philadelphia town, which were a hit, and simultaniously booked a studio in Fairmount to record this record. Soon after this recording, the studio moved, and the recording was lost for many years, over a decade actually. It is many years after that, and finally the entire surving project is being released, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Bar d'O. Have a great show ladies! We know you will be amazing, the best there ever was! This is slice of downtown NYC history. Enjoy!

GREECE: Christos Anestopoulos-Deja Vu (2018)

The compositions and the music of this album is based entirely on the sound of this specific acoustic quartet with saxophone, classical guitar, double bass and drums and it combines strong melodic lines from various styles such as classical, jazz and folk music. With their music they create a dreamy, ethereal and atmosphere which leaves the audience with a positive and happy experience but some times also melancholic and very esoteric and deep. Improvisation is a very basic element in the music the four of them create and it used in a way that each performance of the group is different and unique. credits releases

The Spinshots | Never so Right: East Side
Never so Right: East Side by The Spinshots © Copyright - The Spinshots / Exotica (193428186293) Never So Right east side is a wild and exciting rhythm&tunes package that reflects the Golden Era but takes the listener to a contemporary Exotica trip - Having a Love Hangover after losing your Superlaska? Always Second Best? Cheer up with the Spinhots! The Spinshots - their wild, sulphurous mix of styles never seizes to amaze the audience. The band takes their listeners on a rollercoaster ride through time and space: the music resembles 50s tv tunes, 60s beat, strutting soul, 70s Bollywood, Klezmer, 30’s Big Band, Yé Yé, Spyfi, Space Age... It resembles the soundtrack of that golden era of your life you seemed to have missed. On stage the Spinshots unpack as a musical desert storm, their rhythm, melodies and stage performance provoke a heatwave that can only be answered to by dancing your butt off. They seem to have a direct link with a parallel universe, where naivité actually can be linked to skillfully smithering pretty tunes. They seem to have come through a crack in reality, bringing from an obscure world the rhythm you always failed to catch, the tunes you have been craving, and a backbeat you could neer imagine to be that back. The Spinshots understand people listen largely with their eyes. Having two reknown graphic artists in their midst, the band also emerges to be a verhicle for the art of Emanuel Wiemans and Martin Draax. Feast your eye on Record sleeves, silkprinted posters, special editions. Have some of that suave merchandise items and watch their videoclips - this is not your average band. Like their sound - it resembles the swinging 60s - yet it isn’t ‘retro’. It’s just that the rest of popmusic took the wrong exit, at some point. Oh, and they look sharp, you do want them to take you to their planet.

Monday Nights” is not only the first studio recording of the Gil Evans Orchestra in over forty years, it’s also offers some of the most audacious and electrifying music of the new millennium. The late Gil Evans was one of the most respected orchestrators in jazz history and his fabled collaborations with Miles Davis, including “Birth of the Cool,” “Sketches of Spain” and “Porgy and Bess,” set the gold standard for modern jazz arranging. Accordingly, Evans played a key role in the development of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion. All of these influences are strikingly present on “Monday Nights,” a particularly contemporary incarnation of Evans’ music. After a string of gigs that started in the late 70s, the Gil Evans Orchestra began a run of Monday night engagements in 1983 at the Greenwich Village club, Sweet Basil, which resulted in a number of successful live recordings by Gil Evans and the Monday Night Orchestra. The gig continued sporadically until 1994. Mr. Evans had a knack for bringing out the best in his groups comprised of first-call New York players including David Sanborn, Alan Rubin and Tom “Bones Malone,” and such musicians as George Adams, Hannibal Marvin Peterson and Howard Johnson. Gil’s sons, trumpeter Miles Evans and his brother Noah are keeping the flame alive with “Hidden Treasures,” a trilogy of recordings of which “Monday Nights” is the first. The concept here, is to feature compositions that the Orchestra played live in the late 70s and early 80s. Forthcoming are “The Classics,” featuring modern renderings of Evans’ original arrangements, including “My Ship,” and “The Meaning of the Blues,” and, the final release in the series, “Gil & Anita,” named for the late jazz icon and his wife. “Subway,” written and arranged by keyboardist Pete Levin opens the album and introduces the imperial command of the ensemble, anchored by drummer Kenwood Dennard. With dynamic twists and turns, and subtle musical shadings, this is one hell of a subway ride. Commanding solos by trombonist Dave Bargeron and tenor saxist Alex Foster, offering some respect for Wayne Shorter, add to the excitement. Trumpeter Miles Evans wrote and arranged “LL Funk” and once again Kenwood Dennard drives the music with a powerful funk beat good for both listening and dancing. With Darryl Jones on bass, special guests’ solos abound: keyboardist Paul Shaffer, even more laid back than usual; the criminally underrated Matthew Garrison and his highly original bass: and Vernon Reid bringing a thick almost heavy metal guitar tip to the track. The icing on the cake is David Mann, who weaves his bluesy, potent alto sax throughout the track. “I Surrender,” written by Delmar Brown and Alex Foster, and arranged by Alex and Charles Blenzig is a musical requiem for a heavyweight. Mr. Brown, a superb keyboardist who played with the Gil Evans Orchestra as well as Pat Martino, passed away in 2017 and “I Surrender” is his tribute. He is also present on several tracks recorded before his passing. A true musical heavyweight, Alex Foster offers another side of his soulful, highly expressive tenor. A very popular composition from the Sweet Basil days, “Groove from the Louvre,” written and arranged by John Clark, features the composer on french horn, trumpeters Shunzo Ohno and then Alex Sipiagin, percussionist Mino Cinelu, who came to prominence with Miles Davis and Weather Report, bass trombonist Dave Taylor. Deft and determined, drummer Dennard anchors the band through the gentle opening, and then the hard edged groove that follows. There’s a regal, totally swinging feel to the track, with superb ensemble work that shows this is more than just a group of soloists, but a real orchestra. “Lunar Eclipse” written by Masabumi Kiuchi and arranged by the master himself, Gil Evans, is evocative and cinematic. An Evans protégé, Gil Goldstein solos here, memorably, amidst a dreamy synthesizer background which follows him through his two solos on the track, the first of which gives away to Mino Cinelu on bongos and then drummer Dennard, raising the musical stakes once again. It’s a heady musical mixture. More of the master on “Moonstruck,” which is short, whimsical and very tasty. Tracking at 1:49, it’s an ensemble feature that’s both intriguing and attention grabbing. The recording closes with “Eleven,” also straight from the source, a Gil Evans composition and arrangement, which originally appeared as “Petits Machins (Little Stuff)on the 1968 Miles Davis recording, Filles de Kilimanjaro. The set closer is a bristling swinger, a fitting capper to this powerful set of absolutely stunning music. The groove is infectious, a potent platform for solos by alto saxophonist Chris Hunter, Charles Blenzig on electric piano and Alex Foster, who returns on tenor and continues to amaze. Gil Evans Lives!
