Band of Sisters: Music Action Women Collective Captures the Global Sound of Women’s Hard-Won Triumphs

Around the world, women are fighting bold uphill battles, insisting on their artistic integrity and leadership in music and in their societies. They are fighting to be artists, not women musicians or female composers. Along the way, they are transforming their communities--and making some diverse, kick-ass music.
Music Action Lab invited a handful of these women, hailing from Philly to Yerevan to Singapore, to form a band and create music together. After a residency in San Francisco that incorporated social activism training, entrepreneurial support, and musical engagement, these six artists recorded Music Action Women Collective: The EP (release date: September 20, 2019).
Drawing on electronic and club music, Latin alt-trad, jazz, contemporary classical, and their own idiosyncratic influences, this collective of six wildly talented musicians crafted compositions that showcase their power and perspective. Some (“Nazeni”) suggest traditional song structures, some explore profoundly poetic territory (“Lullaby,” an ode to a yet-to-be-born daughter). Some are seriously groove based (the super funky “Breathe,” the Balkan blast of “Rules Change”), some run free (the wild sway of “Hide”). The compositions all highlight women’s varied and nuanced perspectives.
Unlike many international exchanges, this project put musical chemistry first, building a band, not ticking off geographic or other boxes. This approach yielded a wonderfully cohesive group that avoids the pitfalls of many cross-cultural mashups, creating instead a sonic sandbox where the participants could experiment, learn, and inspire one another.
“The community we made with this project is just a seed, a tiny point,” reflects Serbian saxophonist, composer, band leader, and music therapist Jasna Joviċeviċ, “but if nourished carefully, it could grow into the place where we find shelter, a place to rest for the next giant step, and help us become stronger every time.”
“This project was a life-changing experience,” explains singer, songwriter, and pianist Sevana Tchakerian, who leads several ensembles and education initiatives from her base in Armenia. “I had the luxury to find myself with a diversified and motivated all-female cohort of professional musicians, from around the world, for two whole weeks. Being able to create music and work on the challenges of being a female musician in a male-dominated industry has been a catalyst to reorient my professional, artistic and personal life.”
About the Collective
From five continents, the Collective members specialize in a range of styles and genres. They include:
Liz Draper (USA/ bass) -- A classically and jazz-trained versatile bassist, Liz has performed, recorded, and toured internationally with such groups as the Grammy Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers and Soul Asylum. She has led a diverse range of projects, including Black Blondie, an all-female alternative R&B group featured on the same stage as Questlove and Amy Winehouse, the all-female Carpscale Orkester, and Up The Mountain Down The Mountain, an acoustic chamber doom folk metal project.
Barb Duncan, Muzikaldunk “The MD” (US / Drums) -- Drummer, producer, and educator Muzikaldunk is a Philadelphia-born and -raised musician who has worked as a concert and session drummer, produced music for up-and-coming artists and taught young musicians how to perfect their craft. She is also a member of the alternative rock band JJX and regularly performs with The Remixologist and The Sea Tease. In 2018 Muzikaldunk was honored with the HIT LIKE A GIRL Technology Breakthrough Award of 2018. She also released her first instrumental album “GOLD-MIND”.
Maria Fernanda Gonzalez (Venezuela / Bandola llanera) -- Maria Fernanda is a Barquisimeto-based multi-instrumentalist and journalist. After years of studying cuatro, mandolin and violin, Maria decided to take up the bandola llanera, an obscure Venezuelan instrument with few well-known female performers. She has performed internationally at Festival of Música llanera the Silbón (Venezuela), the festival Girara de Oro (Colombia), the 32nd Music Office Curitiba (Brazil), The International Jazz Festival Barquisimeto (Venezuela) and Folklorico Summer Festivals (Portugal and Spain). She recently toured Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, France, and Italy, performing joropos, a traditional music of the high plains of Venezuela. She teaches master classes on the bandola llanera and is working on codifying and writing a new universal teaching method for the instrument.
Jasna Joviċeviċ  (Serbia / Saxophones, Woodwinds, Percussion) -- Jasna is a saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, and spacedrum player and composer from Serbia. Jasna received her Bachelor’s degree from Franc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and Master’s degree in composition from York University in Toronto. She has also studied music in Serbia, Brazil, US, and Austria, won grants to artist residency programs worldwide, and performed her work around Europe and North America at various international competitions and festivals. A music educator and therapist, Jasna also is the founder and leader of the all-female “New Spark Jazz Orchestra,” featuring Balkan women in jazz. She has recorded several solo albums (“Flow Vertical,” “Invented Reality” and “The Sound of Birds”) and contributed to more than a dozen other recording projects.

A percussionist since childhood, Kasiva is known for her seamless abilities to fuse African music with modern styles crossing hip-hop, reggae, and jazz. Kasiva has deep experience in musical collaborations, such as Coke Studio Africa, The Nile Project, 1Beat, and Xjazz. Kasiva has worked with such musicians as Kirk Whalum (US), Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Suzanna Owiyo (Kenya), Dina El Wedidi (Egypt), Kidum (Burundi) and reggae artist Anthony B (Jamaica).
Sevana Tchakerian (Armenia / Vocals, keys, accordion, flute) -- Sevana is a French-Armenian musician, songwriter, educator and tour manager.  In 2012, she co-founded the Collectif Medz Bazar, a multi-ethnic band creating traditional and original songs melding Middle-Eastern and Balkan folk, hip-hop, chanson, cabaret, jazz, and Latin influences. In 2015, Sevana moved to Armenia to initiate Tsap-Tsapik, an inclusive music program aiming at rural educational development and pedagogical innovation. Over 50 years ago, through a freak accident, Slide Hampton lost all of his original hand-written scores for his octet music. This recording features nine tracks of Slide’s octet music transcribed by Frank Basile

“I first had the privilege of working with and getting to know Slide Hampton in 2006 as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. At that time, Slide was the band's conductor and front-man. I had always known Slide's place as a member of jazz royalty had been cemented long ago, but being there with him first-hand brought into sharp focus what a true genius he is. His conducting, his trombone playing, and his arranging set the standard for countless musicians to strive for, however futile a task that may be.(Thank you, Slide!)”

SERBIA: Vasil Hadzimanov - Lines in Sand (MOONJUNE 2018)

As stylistically varied yet overwhelmingly convincing, Vasil Hadzimanov's sophomore effort for MoonJune Records, "Lines In Sands," puts all of the virtuoso Serbian keyboardist's considerable talents on display. The album mixes ethnic influences with jazz, rock, R&B, funk, psychedelia and more, producing a delightfully zealous musical hybrid -- highlighted by brilliant, soulful improvisations, tight syncopations, a flowing, organic interplay and prevailing understated sensibilities. Vasil even pays homage to the label's founder Leonardo Pavkovic, with the wonderfully crafted second tune, "Mr. MoonJune."

Each song is its own unique entity, augmented by performances that are brilliant in substance, efficiency and cohesiveness. Vasil's keyboards work is smooth, lush and impressive, throughout. The musical ideas expressed are fresh and dynamic, delivered with sparkling economy, but never lacking in soul and conviction.

Thoroughly engaging and an essential work for fans of great keyboards, rich textures, adventurous sonic excursions and dense ensemble work, "Lines In Sands" is a highly ambitious undertaking, an album that will leave you thoroughly satisfied.

USA/SERBIA: DUSAN JEVTOVIC-Live At Home(Moonjune Records 2018)

Artist: DUSAN JEVTOVIC
Title: Live At Home
Catalog number: CD009/2017

LIMITED EDITION CD. For promotional usage only and limited sale. Made possible with the generous support of SKC (STUDENTSKI KULTURNI CENTAR) KRAGUJEVAC. Released by SKC, for limited distribution and marketing by MoonJune Records. The proceeds from the album are intended to fund Dusan’s next studio release.

There is something daringly creative about Dusan Jevtovic’s latest release. Live at Homeis an album that has many special characteristics. As the name aptly suggests this is a live album and was recorded on the 23rd December 2016 at the Decije Pozorište in Dusan’s home city of Kragujevac in Serbia. The recording is clear and uncluttered and does not suffer from any intrusive audience noise, or unwelcome audience participation.

Live at Home contains a number of pieces that featured on Jevtovic’s outstanding No Answer album. For the live performance, Jevtovic’s is aided, as he was in No Answer, by the renowned Serbian keyboard player Vasil Hadzimanov. The rest of the band on this live occasion are made up of Pera Krstajic on bass and Pedja Milutonovic on drums. Live at Home leaves little doubt that progressive fusion can be a passionate affair. It is an album that is never sterile, but is teeming with feeling and creative ideas that give it an organic and human touch. It burns energetically and ignites a multitude of senses; it gently serenades the heart, and when dissonance takes place, it seductively caresses the mind

Live at Home is a superbly-crafted fusion master class. It oozes with heartfelt emotion; containing dashing solo lines and dazzling instrumental passages. The music goes way beyond any normally defined parameters associated with fusion. This creates an album that is often exhilarating and challenging in its complexity. Technically excellent playing is combined with musical structures that enable boldly creative developments and well thought out embellishments to take place. Live at Home is a release that is able to take the listener through a range of moods and emotions. It combines the right mixture of aggression and charming serenity and never ignores the importance of the use of light and shade to emphasise its more explosive parts.

If you enjoy edgy tunes flavoured with lavish amounts of unpredictability and filled with accomplished playing; Live at Home is sure to delight. It is an album that rewards intensive and repeated listens.

SERBIA: EYOT's First Single 'Veer' Announces Their New Album "Innate"

EYOT has recorded three albums since 2008—all critically acclaimed and commercially well received. Over the last eight years EYOT as tour extensively covering 20 countries. Their fourth album Innate was recorded by legendary sound engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Mogwai etc..) who also mixed it at Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago.

For the official announcement, EYOT has released a video for their first single “Veer."

“Veer"—to change direction; shift, turn, or change from one course, position, inclination; one can hear melody moving and rhythm changing in the tune. When read in the band’s native language, Serbian, “Veer" is pronounced the same, but it becomes “Vir-whirl." This is of paramount importance, for this composition is dedicated to the famous archaeological site in Serbia, LEPENSKI VIR, one of the oldest traces of human settlements in the world.

Innate will be released on February 20, 2017 from independent New York label—Ninety and Nine Records.

Praise for EYOT

“This highly original quartet unites jazz, classical, folk and rock elements in an intoxicating mix that is at once meditative and invigorating.”—Ian Patterson, All About Jazz

“The proud representative of a new generation of European musicians, this Serbian quartet breaks all temporal, geographical and cultural boundaries of Balkan Jazz, explosively blending classical music, art-rock and traditional melodies. In its quest for new creative sound combinations, Eyot restlessly explores the limits between tradition and innovation and leads European Jazz off the beaten track. Known as the “Nirvana of Jazz", the four musicians light up the stage with outstandingly fresh and electrifying sounds. The quartet brings to life a music of unique creativity which strikes a pleasant balance between simplicity and sophistication, and is both coarse yet delicate."—Cully Jazz Festival

“This is just simply quite stunning."—Mike Chadwick, SoulandJazz.com

“Electro jazz rock fusion- you name it they play it- full of energy and invention—a top class act.” —Tim Dickeson, Jazzwise

United Nations celebrated the International Jazz Day with Serbian and Brazilian artists and a global audience

United Nations celebrated the International Jazz Day with Serbian and Brazilian artists and a global audience

The fifth annual International Jazz Day (IJD) was celebrated at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on May 3rd with a jazz concert and a photo exhibit.

April 30th was first introduced as IJD in 2011 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on the initiative of one the jazz greats, pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, and has become a global tradition ever since.

Organized by Danijela Milic, a UN staff member and an avid supporter of IJD, in partnership with LeitmotivArts and the Portuguese Language Society with the support of the Permanent Mission of Serbia to the UN, this unique event combined two different art forms for one great cause.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Milic quoted Herbie Hancock that "jazz is about being in the moment" which was chosen as the theme for the event.  Artists from Brazil and Serbia illustrated this with "MOMENTS & MOVEMENTS" combining the beautiful sounds of Brazilian and world jazz with breathtaking photography.

Aleksandra Denda from Serbia and Sergio Pereira from Brazil teamed up to bring world-class jazz to the UN.  Aleksandra Denda is an internationally recognised, New York-based vocalist, bandleader and songwriter. She released her debut album “Dreamer” in March 2016 and took part in the IJD celebration on April 30th in Washington D.C., the IJD Global Host City for 2016. Sergio Pereira is a long-serving UN employee and also a talented guitar player and composer. After making a guest appearance at the UN IJD celebration in 2014, he took the stage to perform some of his original compositions from the upcoming album "Swingando" featuring Brazilian jazz sounds.

https://aleksandradenda.bandcamp.com/track/willow-tree
In the true spirit of improvisation, these two musicians hit the stage together for the first time, delighting the audience with their performance.  The versatile repertoire included “Save your love for me” by Buddy Jonson, Jobim’s “Chega de caudade” and Djavan’s “Flor de Lis”. The audience was also treated to the original compositions which they masterfully performed together: Pereira’s “My Girls” and Denda’s “Willow Tree” which the audience rewarded with long applauses.

Perfect accompaniments to the soulful music were the moments captured by lenses of internationally published photographers Lazar Zarupski from Serbia and Ana Cortez and Wagner Santiago, UN
employees
from Brazil. They presented a selection of nature shots taken in the Balkans, North America and the Amazon, showing their own take on jazz:  improvising and composing what's in the frame in order to capture the moments and movements in nature and convey the emotion.

In thanking the artists for participating in this special event, Danijela Milic said that she saw jazz as a form of dialogue that knows no boundaries and unites people across the globe.  This beautiful experience of sights and sounds was enjoyed by UN officials and staff from various world cultures, attesting to the true global character of jazz and arts in general.

“Tonight in this global house, these artists, who met for the first time, beautifully united strings, voices and snapshots delighting the audience and capturing the true spirit of the International Jazz Day” Milic said.

The photo exhibit will remain on display at the United Nations through May 6th.

MoonJune Records new release: YAGULL "Kai"

Dear MoonJune Friends in Music

Yagull's official debut for MoonJune Records, Kai, finds the band expanding its post-rock chamber soundtrack concept to great effect.  The result is a simmering sonic bouillabaisse, chocked full of choice ingredients which delectably merge to blur the lines drawn by traditional genres -- delightfully teasing the palette, while appealing to an expansive range of music aficionados! The group delivers twelve songs on this joyous outing: eight brand new compositions; two tunes from their previous album Films, reworked and revisited; plus, two tastefully-revised classic rock covers (Deep Purple and Free). The tracks showcase Yagull's considerably potent stylistic capacity, making for a savory, finely-polished sophomore release. This new effort finds Yagull now launching itself from a duo framework -- with Sasha Markovic being joined by the extraordinary pianist, Kana Kamitsubo -- this most special of occasions is perfectly accentuated by a host of guest contributors; featuring fellow MoonJune international recording maestros, Beledo (guitar, lute) and Dewa Budjana (guitar), in addition to Marko Djordjevic (drums), and many other great musicians. With Kai, Sasha, Kana & company have embarked on a majestic journey that will appeal to a broad range of listeners ... and carry them along for the ride!

NEWS FROM JWQ FEATURED MUSICIANS: CD RELEASE: DIMITRIJE VASILJEVIC, METAPHOR

dimitrijevasiljevic2

CD RELEASE: DIMITRIJE VASILJEVIC, METAPHOR

Dimitrije Vasiljevic’s new album Metaphor has been released in the United States on July 22, 2014 and is now available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby and Google Play stores.
Metaphor is a contemporary jazz solo piano album influenced by classical music aesthetics and a touch of Balkan traditions. Compelling original compositions radiate a vivid blend of artistic virtuosity and a delicate music thought which send the listener on a musical journey filled with varying emotions.
French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc praises the album with words “astonishing virtuosity, unique personality and straight to your heart sensibility. Dimitrije has it all and is a new force to reckon with. I am a fan.”
The album brings a fresh treatment of solo piano as a device of compositional expression. Through the clear presentation of somewhat dreamy yet confident celebration of piano sound, Metaphor successfully blends modern jazz language, impressionistic harmonies and Balkan rhythms.
“Living in a loud and fast world of modern age, people tend to neglect the obvious and skip the present, chasing the phantoms of somewhat delusional future. In such a setting, the metaphors of timeless virtues smolder in the ether of  reality, reminding us about our true nature and indigenous spirit”, said Dimitrije Vasiljevic, explaining the title of his new record.
The album features eight original jazz solo piano compositions, seven of which recorded and produced at Oktaven Audio studio in New York, while one, “The Love Is Out There” recorded at the live performance in Montreux Jazz Festival where Vasiljevic debuted it. “Metaphor” was produced by LeitmotivArts.
The opening track, “Wardenclyffe”, pulls in the audience with its strong and passionate texture at the very introduction, while painting a musical portrait of Nikola Tesla. And then there’s “Sacre-Coeur” a beautiful track that evokes footsteps of the cobblestones of Paris. “Ditto” and “Anima” are insightful picturesque dedications in which Vasiljevic wistfully depict the complexity of individual characters. Mysterious “Ellipsis” and moderately discreet “Far” introduce a contrasting mood which suggest composer’s tendency for the exploration of strong melodic passages. And finally, “Tronozhats”, a traditional Montenegrin three-legged stool, metaphorically refers to the piano, Vasiljevic’s roots and traditions which inspire and influence his music expression.
Through a wide palette of moods and colors, the album brings a lyrical story about a search for inner worlds and their emotional vigor using the power of jazz in a very personal way. Stunning cover artwork alludes to the infinite movement and ebbs and flows of emotions present in Vasiljevic’s music.

Dimitrije Vasiljevic to light up Carnegie Hall in celebration of modern jazz piano sound

Fresh on the heels of a successful year 2013 culminating in the release of his first album, "The Path of Silvan", and several concerts both as soloist and with his quartet, Dimitrije Vasiljevic will be making his Carnegie Hall debut in a solo piano concert on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 8:00 pm.

Vasiljevic will showcase his original compositions from his upcoming solo piano album "Metaphor", to be released later this year. He will also perform works of some well-known American jazz masters in his own arrangements and premiere his original composition "Wardenclyffe" inspired by and dedicated to the great scientist and humanist, Nikola Tesla.

Vasiljevic received recognition of achievement from the Tesla Science Foundation for his contribution in promoting the life and legacy of Nikola Tesla through music. Vasiljevic is an award-winning (Montreux Jazz Festival), New York-based jazz pianist and composer whose "iridescent and captivating music” (All about Jazz) weaves together Balkan motifs with the subtle flavors of European jazz. Hailing from Serbia, this Berklee College of Music and NYU Steinhardt graduate is rapidly garnering international acclaim for his virtuosity and emotionally charged interpretations.

Preparing for his concert, Vasiljevic mused about selecting the program for this milestone career appearance:
“I am so thrilled to be making my Carnegie Hall solo piano debut. Performing for a New York audience my blend of modern jazz infused with Balkan rhythms and inspired by my classical music background - and in this amazing venue - is the opportunity of a lifetime for me. The audience can expect to hear a varied program and transporting interpretations.”
