JazzWorldQuest 2024-Amorosa(Belgium)-Nouvel album Petit Soleil

Amorosa

Nouvel album Petit Soleil

Matteo Carola : guitare, cavaquinho, chant, compositions
Mathieu Robert : saxophone soprano, shakuhashi, agogô
Filippe Caporali : contrebasse
Falk Schrauwen: percussions

World Music Mix: David Linx, Guillaume de Chassy, Matteo Pastorino-On Shoulders We Stand (Enja/Yellowbird Records 2022)

David Linx, Guillaume de Chassy, Matteo Pastorino

Nouvel album On Shoulders We Stand

David Linx on vocals, Guillaume de Chassy on piano and Matteo Pastorino on clarinets released the album On Shoulders We Stand, a trio album inspired by the music of Bach, Ravel, Scriabin, Schubert, Chopin, Mompou, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich.
The texts are written by David Linx and the transcriptions by Guillaume de Chassy.
“We don’t invent anything totally; we stand on the shoulders of the great creators who have preceded us or those we rub shoulders with today: musicians, painters, writers … these giants support us and inspire us every day.”
This is how David Linx and Guillaume de Chassy, initiators of this project, define their common approach. With On Shoulders We Stand, the three musicians have taken on a major challenge, joyfully assuming a risk-taking that has become rare in the current conformism.

BELGIUM/USA: Noah Howard-Live In Europe Vol.1 (2020)

Noah Howard was born in 1943 in New Orleans, the heartland of Jazz. Growing up in a city vibrating with Gospel and Dixieland he lived music in all its forms and played music from his childhood in his church. Noah first learned to play the trumpet and later moving on to alto, tenor and soprano saxophone. Noah’s music evolved as he worked with different people in different places, working with Dewey Johnson in Los Angeles and later on in San Francisco, and playing with Sun Ra after moving to New York. As an innovator influenced by John Coltrane and Albert Ayler he became a driver of the early Free Jazz movement and quickly developed into one of the world’s most celebrated alt saxophonists. He recorded his first LP “Noah Howard Quartet” as a leader in 1965 and his second LP “Noah Howard at Judson Hall” in 1966 both for the groundbreaking ESP Records label. In 1969 he appeared on Frank Wright’s album “One For John” and on “Black Gipsy” with Archie Shepp. His third record, which he lead, working with Arthur Doyle was the internationally acclaimed “Black Ark”. With this, Noah entered the Jazz hall of fame as one of the most brilliant and innovative Free Jazz musicians. In 1971 he created his own record label AltSax and published most of his music under that label. In the same year he recorded Patterns in the Netherlands with Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink. Having honed his style and explored many eclectic sounds, he became disenchanted by the lack of appreciation for... more credits released April 10, 2020 45 years after its original release, Sconsolato is proud to annonce an official reissue of “Live In Europe Vol.1” limited to 300 remastered vinyl copies. APPLEBLUESEAGREEN (a literal translation of the Flemish word 'appelblauwzeegroen') is a color with an ambiguous personality. It WANDERS LONELY somewhere in between the DUNES of green and blue. The now GHOSTLY origins of this expression are unclear and its meaning has changed in the MARCH of time.

BUT APPLES ARE GREEN. THE SEA IS BLUE. Perhaps if the BODILY parts would have been MIRRORED, it could have changed the course of its PILOT. Fortunately, even though the composition of the word has been resting in a DORMANT state, by no means are we planning for its FUNERAL.

APPLEBLUESEAGREEN is a shifting FLUID, offering FREEDOM within imaginary WALLS. We each look at its PARADE with a different GAZE.

BELGIUM/GERMANY : Philip Catherine / Paulo Morello / Sven Faller – Manoir de mes Rêves (Enja 2019)

Artist: Paulo Morello Artist: Philip Catherine Music Publisher: Copyright Control Composer: Django Reinhardt Guitar: Paulo Morello Guitar: Philip Catherine Bass: Sven Faller

The two guitarists Catherine and Morello met in 2010 at the Burghausen Jazz Festival know and appreciate. In 2017, the two guitar virtuosos together with bassist Sven Faller founded an intimate and grooving trio.

Now her first album “Manoir de mes Rêves” is released – named after a composition by European jazz pioneer Django Reinhardt. Much of the repertoire comes from the Paris of the 1950s and 60s, including compositions by Georges Brassens, Henri Salvador and Eddy Louiss, Philip admired since his youth. Even more recent material from the repertoire of the legendary Belgian singer Maurane or the famous bossa nova “Recado” offer an ideal springboard for the filigree interaction of the three individualists.

Philip Catherine is a jazz guitar legend. He toured at a young age with Dexter Gordon, Jean-Luc Ponty, Chet Baker, Tom Harrell and many other greats. Charles Mingus nicknamed him “Young Django”. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote recently about him that he plays “things you can not hear from any other guitarist in the world right now”. However, it is not the technique and speed that sets the string wizard apart, but its unmistakable acoustic guitar tone and improvisational style that inspired the great winds of jazz. Paulo Morello is considered one of the most interesting jazz guitarists in Europe.

He gained international fame with his Bossa Nova-Legends project: along with Grammy winner Leny Andrade or bossa nova grandfather Johnny Alf, Morello has appeared at major European and South American festivals. Morello toured with his trio Hammond Eggs with US musicians Randy Brecker and Bob Mintzer. In addition, he worked with Jimmy Smith, Paul Kuhn, Ivan Lins, Airto Moreira, Larry Coryell or Pat Martino. Sven Faller has made a name for himself internationally with his melodic style on the double bass.

After studying at the Mannes College of Music, he lived in New York for many years and shared the stage with numerous well-known artists such as Charlie Mariano, Chico Freeman, Bobby Watson, Pippo Pollina or Konstantin Wecker. With his CD “Night Music” and the book of the same name, he has finally established himself not only as a bassist, but also as a composer and author.

USA/BELGIUM: E.J. Strickland Quintet-Warriors for Peace( Jammincolors 2018)

E.J. Strickland Quintet | Warriors for Peace
E.J. STRICKLAND - drums
GODWIN LOUIS - alto sax
JURE PUKL - tenor & soprano saxes
TABER GABLE - piano
JOSH GINSBURG - bass
ULRICH EDORH - vocals (track 11)

Fun. Stirring. Intriguing. Kinetic: There are so many moods and meanings enmeshed into E.J. Strickland’s music. His myriad influences and ideas crossing and branching out in every direction set up the basis for a remarkable album.

"Warriors For Peace" will be a brilliant success and a joy to share a committed musical approach. It is an album with only original compositions by E.J. Strickland which reflects the peaceful and persistent intensity with which battles for peace, equality, & justice are fought worldwide. It is a dedication to those who break the silence and stand up for what is right, even in the face of much adversity.

The album was recorded in April 2018 on the road in Marseille (France). The overall feeling is very peaceful & joyous. Although one wouldn't classify it as a ballads album, it gives a similar sensation of calm beauty & elegance. All the musicians on this album play with the same love & joy. Each E.J. composition is a journey towards peace, whether it be about taking a stand against evil or finding inner peace within ourselves.
Strickland, who composed all the 11 tracks, including “Warriors For Peace” the eponymous title and a vocal “Let It Go”, stated about his musicians: “Godwin Louis on alto sax is just a wonderful musician and human being. He is always “on” when we perform. Jure Pukl on tenor & soprano saxes, is a beautiful musician who I’ve checked out a lot over the years as a leader of his own groups in NY. This will be our first album playing with one another. Taber Gable is a super sensitive and exciting pianist who I’ve just started working with. You can really feel his love and appreciation for music in his playing. Josh Ginsburg is a bassist with an incredible feel and spirit ».

It is high quality, sophisticated jazz in the modern traditional sense—nothing avant-garde, but fresh melodies with hip harmonies played head, solo, head by some of the best jazz musicians in the business. As a matter of fact, E.J.’s bandmates’ performances are illuminating, but during all tunes of “Warriors for Peace” it’s Strickland who’s shining the light!

In this CD, E.J. proves again his ability to get the most out of his musicians and to show that drummer-led music gives listeners a unique opportunity to live creative, eclectic, enjoyable music, always full of freshness, fun and groove.

BELGIUM: The Wrong Object -Into The Herd (MoonJune Records 2019)

UK magazine Jazzwise has described Belgian sextet The Wrong Object as “adept at mixing Canterbury styled prog rock with Zappa-esque jazz fusion and Frippertronics to produce a beat that has elements of the past and the future thundering through it. [Their music] cleverly fuses all of these various musical elements together, expertly twisting various world music styles into the mix to produce a varied and unpredictable set of original material.”

With their new release, Into The Herd (Off/MoonJune) , The Wrong Object make a return to center stage, with a studio album of original compositions showcasing a variety of fresh, powerful material. After 15 years of an existence marked by extensive touring, recording and numerous collaborations with international jazz and rock luminaries (Elton Dean, Harry Beckett, Annie Whitehead, Alex Maguire, Stanley Jason Zappa, Ed Mann, Robin Verheyen), The Wrong Object ventures further into hybrid musical territories, pushing the boundaries of progressive jazz, rock and contemporary music. Perhaps the influence of the late Frank Zappa has never been more apparent.

The songs continually weave, duck, dart, and ‘stop on a dime’; while exhibiting the “controlled reckless abandon” and a similar zany, humorous approach to both harmony and melodic/thematic motifs, akin to that which characterized his work. This is a herculean effort; one that goes a long way in filling the very noticeable long-standing void left in the wake of Zappa’s departure.

"Orca Noise Unit is based on an anagram of —oneironautics—, which refers to the ability to travel within a dream on a conscious basis. Those who have already kept a dream journal know what it feels like to go back and read over older parts. Some dream accounts have a lot of details, others evoke not much more than just a vibe. Some can be read like a full story, whereas others have no beginning, or no end, or neither. Sometimes we were genuinely lucid at the moment of the dream - or at least had a clear perception of things - whereas at other moments we were totally immersed in the projected reality.
But together the stories always make sense in a very particular way that is difficult to describe. When I was putting this record together I understood at some point that this was the perfect image for what I was trying to do. The feeling I got when listening to the whole of the final versions of the songs was very similar to the one I get when I’m dealing with my own dream world and my dream journal.
This was a new sensation for me. I let it be the guide for the final adjustments of the music and I’m very happy and excited to have been able to turn that atmosphere into a musical form.”

“This record is dedicated to the loving memory of my father, Jacques Dumoulin.”

In addition to having a name that is now inseparable from the singer David Linx, under his own name pianist Diederik Wissels is also the creator of music that is both sensitive and refined in the tradition of European jazz tinted with classical music. After the superb “Tender Is the Night”, “Streams”, “Song of You”, “The Hillock Songstress” (voted a “shock” by Jazzman magazine) and “From This Day Forward”, this new album probes once again - although in different ways - the mysteries of atmospheric themes drawn from soft-focus melancholy.

Vegir (Featuring Tony Levin)
Vantomme is a project of Dominique Vantomme, keyboardist, composer, band leader and producer, equally as well known for his work with many European pop and rock acts as for being the jazz piano instructor at the Music Conservatory in Kortrijk, in his native Belgium. In the studio session in Antwerpen, Belgium, in October 2016, Dominique Vantomme was joined by two musicians from the MoonJune circuit: the legendary Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Stick Men) on bass guitar and Chapman stick, and Michel Delville (The Wrong Object; douBt; Machine Mass) on guitar, with Dominique's ultra-talented Belgian colleague Maxime Lenssens, tasked with holding down the timekeeping duties. The spontaneity and freshness of this sizzling, high-altitude set reflects the equally unpretentious manner in which the session itself came together. Tackling some decidedly hip musical sketches of Dominique Vantomme, the band is given full artistic liberty - and with all participants in top form, the resulting music weaves and winds its way across paths previously untrodden . . . in stunning fashion, and with sure footing!

USA/BELGIUM: Moonjune Records Releases; VANTOMME-Vegir

Artist: VANTOMME
Title: Vegir (featuring Tony Levin)
MJR catalog number: MJR090

Vantomme is a project of Dominique Vantomme, keyboardist, composer, band leader and producer, equally as well known for his work with many European pop and rock acts as for being the jazz piano instructor at the Music Conservatory in Kortrijk, in his native Belgium. In the studio session in Antwerpen, Belgium, in October 2016, Dominique Vantomme was joined by two musicians from the MoonJune circuit: the legendary Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Sick Men) on bass guitar and Chapman stick, andMichel Delville (The Wrong Object; douBt; Machine Mass) on guitar, with Dominique's ultra-talented Belgian colleague Maxime Lenssens, tasked with holding down the timekeeping duties. The spontaneity and freshness of this sizzling, high-altitude set reflects the equally unpretentious manner in which the session itself came together. Tackling some decidedly hip musical sketches of Dominique Vantomme, the band is given full artistic liberty - and with all participants in top form, the resulting music weaves and winds its way across paths previously untrodden ... in stunning fashion, and with sure footing! In the truest MoonJune tradition, "Vegir" thumbs its nose at convention and showcases these seasoned veteran musicians at the top of their game: with the skill set, bravery and chutzpah to follow their instincts and, in the process, allow the music to seek out and ultimately capture its own form. It slinks; it growls; it stalks; it devours! It grooves; it stutters; it holds you in suspense, then explodes! (... think 'juggling chainsaws' in the sonic realm.)
