KICKSTARTER: Lena Bloch & Feathery - New Album "Rose Of Lifta"

*ABOUT OUR PROJECT "ROSE OF LIFTA":

The idea of this project came to my mind when I was reading the poem by Iman Annab "Climbing Rose Of Lifta", about the pain of separation from one's homeland, intense yearning and strong hope of return. Deeply moved by this poem, I wrote a piece "Rose Of Lifta" and later on several other compositions, dedicated to those who had to leave their homes and loved ones, becoming refugees and expatriates.

My ensemble colleagues understood me emotionally and musically, and we added several more pieces written by Russ Lossing. It will be an album of a string of compositions, different in mood and color, but unified by a continuous narrative of longing for home.

Our approach, the ways to interpret the compositions developed organically during our performances, and after one year of working on the material, we now ready to record it and simply can't wait! Our recording will again be done in one room, without headphones or booths,

The sound engineer that has been working with us is Paul Wickliffe (Skyline Productions), whose work Dan Morgenstern describes as the following: "There is a fifth member of this group, Paul Wickliffe, who recorded, mixed and mastered the music--and the term "mastered" has seldom been more appropriate. The special sound of this group has been perfectly captured, each voice crystal clear, yet reflecting the music's collective essence." We are very thrilled to be working with Paul again, he is a wizard who can create the most intimate listening experience.

USA: Kickstarter Campaign for: Nancy Kelly's Mark Murphy Tribute CD

Kickstarter Campaign for:
Nancy Kelly's Mark Murphy Tribute CD

Nancy Kelly's 6th CD
Honoring Legendary Jazz Singer Mark Murphy

Watch The Video

As a young jazz singer, I was blessed to be supported by a well-run indie label that helped build my career and established my presence on the national and international jazz scene. Over the ensuing decades, I’ve seen the music industry mutate. Today the challenges of the digital age can put tremendous stress on the recording artist, but it has also brought new opportunities, such as crowdfunding. Although no longer a source of significant income, even for many established popular artists, the need for releasing new recordings is still essential for staying alive in the business. It’s important to document one’s artistry, and it’s a hook for getting booked and staying in the game. It heightens awareness, it generates work, and emotionally speaking, making recordings is what keeps artists alive, this ability to share their art of spontaneous creation and love.

Why Mark Murphy:
People often ask me who my favorite singer is, and my answer is always, without hesitating, Mark Murphy. I was heavily influenced by his work. He was “the real deal,” and he’s the reason I am a jazz singer. With Mark’s recent passing, I am moved to honor him musically with this recording. Mark and I were friends and we adored each other. I was very moved to learn recently that I was one of his favorite singers.

The CD:
I am collaborating with pianist John DiMartino on this project. He too is a huge Mark Murphy fan and we are very excited to see this endeavor take on its own life. You certainly won't need to be a Mark fan to be moved by the music I’ve chosen for this recording. Mark’s music went through many changes as he grew and matured. I'm going to record the songs that most affected me as an artist. These compositions nourished me and gave birth to my jazz soul.

With your financial support, I will honor my mentor, the great Mark Murphy, and will continue to aspire to achieve his authentic artistry, helping to keep jazz vital, relevant and alive.

The recording date has been set for mid-October. We would like to see the CD released in early 2018.  John and I are rehearsing and developing the music. Once we get a feel for the vibe and direction of the music, we will then choose the players from the New York city jazz pool that will compliment the direction and sound.
A personal note from Nancy

Dear Friends,

In the past few years I have teamed up with an international booking agent, Jean-Pierre Leduc www.lunchedrecords.com. We met just after my last recording, "B That Way," had run its course. So much is about timing in this business. As it happens, Jean-Pierre was Mark Murphy's last manager, and we both continue to feel a very strong personal connection to him. We feel confident that this project will not only be a worthy addition to my discography, but will also create a demand for concerts worldwide.

Not only will your support honor the great Mark Murphy and his formidable legacy, it will also create awareness for my artistry, to continue my quest to keep creating great music for you, and for all that enjoy this great art form.

KICKSTARTER/USA Help Release Colin Trusedell's Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2

The Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2 strikes back with soaring melodies, cosmic funky grooves, and epic symphonic landscapes.
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!!!
Thank you so much for checking out my brand new project! I have spent a great deal of time preparing this album for release and it is by far the most cool, slammin', epic record that I have created thus far. I need for as many people as possible to hear this album and REALLY need help with funds for advertising. It is great to do a project and complete the process but advertising is where the rubber meets the road. With your generous contributions I can take things to the next level! Please pledge what you can and I appreciate your time. Read more about the project below:
Colin Trusedell’s new album, “Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2,” marks the return of the internationally acclaimed funk and fusion group, Quartet of Jazz Death, with 11 brand new original compositions. Trusedell takes the electric bass sound to the next level by experimenting even further with polyphonic octave effects and his SUPER SYNTH bass sounds!
Compositionally, Trusedell pulled from his classical background utilizing a set of full orchestra sounds throughout the new album mixed with phat and nasty grooves. The band is as tight as ever as the band lived with the tunes for over a year before recording them.
The album has a wide range of appeal utilizing some featured guests like the smooth and voluptuous vocals of Krista Joyce, the tight syncopated rapping of Demoh, and the energetic fusion saxophone provided by John Dawson.
The Quartet of Jazz Death core members consist of some of the best and most well-know musicians in Colorado; Stefan Flores on drum set, Steve Langemo on electric guitar, Shawn Hanlon on keyboards and synthesizer, and Colin Trusedell on electric bass.
Soaring melodies, funky grooves, drum & bass electro/fusion jazz music, played by amazing musicians filling your ears with awesome music!
Colin Trusedell is officially endorsed by Roscoe Guitars and played his custom Roscoe LG-3005 on all tracks on “Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2”

KICKSTARTER USA Chaz Lipp Groove Tripp - Jazz Album ft Sanjaya Malakar

Photo: Max Wang
The Chaz Lipp Groove Tripp
has recorded an album of energetic, impassioned takes on timeless jazz standards. Led by saxophonist Chaz Lipp (that's me!) and featuring vocals by Sanjaya Malakar (of American Idol fame), the heavy-lifting is all but completed. The album, Good Merlin, is recorded and samples can be heard in the video above.

There's expensive work yet to be done (mastering, printing and pressing) and that's why I'm turning to you for assistance in bringing this music to the public.

In late 2014, Sanjaya accepted my invite to perform at a benefit show for a non-profit organization. The band sounded so good, with Sanjaya proving to be an expert interpreter of Great American Songbook standards, that I booked additional gigs... and a recording session at Fastback Studio in Seattle. My sax lines intertwine with Sanjaya's vocals for this one-of-a-kind project.

The personnel for the recording session:

Chaz Lipp - alto saxophone
Sanjaya Malakar - vocals
Charlie Hiestand - piano
Trevor Pelletier - upright bass
Chris Patin - drums
Gary Lanz - producer

KICKSTARTER: UKk: To get the new mobile listings app/site 'JazzLondonLive' up & running we need some upfront support from the jazz community!

About this project

JazzLondonLive is a new digital resource devised to fill the void left by jazz lovers' monthly booklet.

Sarah Chaplin (aka @jazzsez) is working with Mick Sexton to put an exciting and informative new app/site together, which will give people access to what’s on in the jazz world every day of the year all over London, as well as insights into who’s who in the London jazz scene, plus links to news and reviews, band personnel, tour dates, festival announcements and more. We launched JazzLondonLive on 1 June 2016 with a temporary wordpress site while we are raising funds to build the database engine that will power an amazing app, set to go live on 1 Sept 2016.

That's where you come in. Obviously, in order to get something like this off the ground, we need some upfront commitment from the jazz community, for which you will be handsomely rewarded. To this end, we hope that one of the reward options will appeal to you and that you will want to show your support for this new service for jazz lovers.

However you decide to support us, we will organise a big meet-up for all the backers to say thank you to everyone - most likely this will take place during the final weekend of the EFG London Jazz Festival in November.

KICKSTARTER: "Notes from the Spirit" will be an album of original jazz music by Tom Rubenoff.

Notes from the Spirit

Hi, I’m Tom Rubenoff.
Some people say that emotions are the means our spirits use to communicate with us. The album title, “Notes from the Spirit” comes from  my performance style.  When I play or sing I get out of the way and let what’s inside me shine through.
I’ve been writing and performing music and poetry for about fifty years, and in that time I have acquired many talented friends.  Some of these gifted friends have joined me to form an amazing band for this project.  I have included their bios below.  After the bios there are excerpts of a couple of the songs we have already recorded.  Besides these great friends I have Little Dog Studio to record in, and plenty of music that I've written, just waiting to be recorded.
I love being in the studio and making music with these guys. It is so much fun. Everybody is making their creative contribution to evolve each piece into what it wants to be. The result is an art form called jazz, each piece special unique to that session. Each player rewrites their own part as we play. The experience is priceless.
The project is to record nine or so of my compositions at Little Dog Studio over three or so sessions to take place between June and November 2016, add these pieces to three we have already recorded and produce a piece of art, a lovingly crafted album of original music full of joy and surprise that you will love to hear.
All the right creative ingredients are available.   When the funding is in place I am confident that the project will be a success.  But it won't go anywhere without you.   I have run the numbers and "Notes from the Spirit" is only possible if it is funded.  This is where you can make a big difference.  We need at least $8,000 to pay for studio time, musicians and production.
Time is also a factor.  It is very fortunate that these uniquely talented individuals and Little Dog Studio are available to do this now.  We need funding now to lock in a recording schedule.  If we do not, this wonderful opportunity will soon fade away.  We need you.  Please help us with your generous contribution. Thank you.
Please take a glance at the rewards we will be offering for your donation, including CD's, downloads, videos and experiences.  If you are viewing this on a mobile device they may not be immediately visible, but you can access them from the menu.
I am here on Kickstarter because I cannot fund this project myself.  I need your help.   Please support our effort to create this album. Thanks again.
Special thanks to David Leifer for his help with the videos. This next one is me and bassist Dan Fox at Ryles Jazz Club playing my tune, "No I Don't Miss You."

Kickstarter: USA:Karen Shane's 2nd Jazz Vocal CD - "The Moon is Blue"

I've been wanting to make my second jazz vocal recording for over five years.  I'm sure most of you know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day of work, family and other commitments while putting one's dreams on the back burner until someday, maybe...
My desire to get back into the studio kept coming to the surface and I am so happy that the wheels were finally set in motion.
With all of my planning, including making song choices, collaborating with my producer/arranger/pianist, practicing tunes, and working out so many details (not to mention multiple revisions to my timeline), this opportunity to express myself musically has finally come to fruition.
I am blessed to have so many wonderful, world class musicians on my recording.  I can't wait to share these "jazz standards" with you.

USA/KICKSTARTER: Magic Mountain: A new album by the Kalmanovitch Maneri Duo

The first recording from the viola duo that cuts to the heart of music: from the blues to Babbit, from Mahler to jazz to microtonality.
Magic Mountain is the first recording from the Kalmanovitch Maneri Duo. We recorded this album at our favorite hall in the United States: New England Conservatory's landmark Jordan Hall. Now, we're raising funds to release this album and build a new platform for our music and our message.
About Our Duo
The first time we played together, a decade ago, we knew something special was in the air. Part of it is our 'string story'. We both play the viola, the unsung hero of the string world, and each of us charted our own path as improvisers at a time when 'jazz viola' was still an oxymoron.
But really, it’s because we share the same basic beliefs about music. For each of us, improvisation is not about letting go — it's about digging in. It's a discipline; a ritual space that binds us to the moment and trains us to be be present to every possibility. When we play, we listen with more than just our ears: we listen with all the parts of our experience.

We play out of our belief that every one of us has a personal voice—a secret melody—that sings the essential quality of the self. That voice treats tension, uncertainty and difference as literal and figurative counterpoint. It's empathy made audible. And whenever we play this way, we create a space for others to do the same.
About Magic Mountain

Magic Mountain is a suite of nine pieces. We started with a simple set-up: two violas, two chairs, and a few microphones. And what unfolded from that was everything.

We borrowed our album’s name from Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain), the 1924 book by Thomas Mann. On the surface, Mann's story is about a young man whose three-week visit to a Swiss sanitarium mysteriously turns into seven years. Dig deeper, though, and the story is an exploration of the nature of time: its illusions and distortions, and the ambiguous quality of memory.
Some people say The Magic Mountain is a challenging read. Maybe it’s because Mann doesn’t serve up narrative in a straightforward fashion. He narrates time the way his hero experiences it: unraveling, expanding, and merging into the present.

Some people say that our music is a challenging listen. If it's so, then perhaps it's because we don’t serve up our musical stories in a straightforward fashion, either. Are we improvising, or composing on the spot? Are we playing chamber music or jazz?

As string players, we came of age in a time that asked us to choose between the musical languages we loved. Today, we play music the way we experience, and not how it's categorized. To us, Milton Babbitt is as essential as the Blues, and a Johnny Hodges tone can be played with a Morton Feldman touch.

Much of what we do blurs the lines around musical things. Tonality? From one note to the next, we might find six microtones to play. Self and other? It can be hard at times—even for us—to tell our voices apart. Time? At any moment, we might feel three meters at play. Sound and silence? To us, the music lives in both. With each performance, we create new chamber music that will never be heard before and will never be heard again.
We play what we love

Magic Mountain is full of our personal and musical histories. The track titles form a second narrative, rich with clues to who we are and where we've been. Some of the track titles are borrowed from Der Zauberberg, and others allude to figures whose voices speak to us: pianist Paul Bley, actor Paul Muni, the fictional composer Adrian Leverkühn, and Mat's father, Joe Maneri.

The Dance of Death, the album's third track, shows the connection we feel between Bach's solo instrumental works and Eliot Carter's first String Quartet. We hear an off-kilter swing in both composers' works. Their downbeats aren't landings, but lifts. Their sense of metric weight is dynamic and kinetic. Our opening notes are a gesture that reveals music already in motion.
Foreword, the album's opening track, is a concise summary of our approach to music-making. Earlier this year, Mat transcribed this piece. (A concert score is one of our perks - see the sidebar.) It was a labour of love that allowed him to examine a compositional process that unfolds outside of the sphere of thoughts and words.
The album's opening track is a concise illustration of a compositional process that unfolds outside the sphere of thought or words. In music theory terms, it's a three-part sonata form based on a six-note motif carried through extended harmonic and rhythmic development. In human terms, this track reveals a seamless exchange of roles. Tensions and resolutions shift rapidly between us. Long notes become short ones; loud notes become soft ones; one voice's harmony becomes the other's melody.
The title of the album's last track, Paul Muni's Boat refers to a favorite saying of Mat’s father, the saxophonist/composer Joe Maneri. When Joe wanted to evoke the fine line between stillness and motion, he’d say, “You know, like Paul Muni’s boat.”

We never found the Paul Muni movie he was referring to, but for us it became shorthand for an improvisation stretching thematic and harmonic development at a glacial pace. The long pauses at 3:06 and 3:17 are silences rich with music. Our coda at 9:10 uses microtonality to breathe subtle expression into Mahleresque harmonies.
How your support will help
We've been fortunate throughout our careers to release recordings on a variety of labels. But this music is so close to us that we wanted to be able to retain its personality by releasing it ourselves.
We intend Magic Mountain to serve a key role in establishing our presence as a new kind of chamber music ensemble. It will help us to tour more, to record more, and to catalyze new partnerships with presenters, educators, and audiences in every direction.
Our album is mixed and ready to go. Your pledges will help pay for photography, mastering, graphic design, manufacturing CDs and limited-edition double LPs, and the setup costs to distribute the album through our website.
Releasing this record helps us to tell our story, and to invite everyone into our conversation. We hope you'll join us.

Risks and challenges

In a time of virtual experience, you might wonder why we'd bother releasing a physical recording. Our simple answer: we still believe in the power of objects.
We love books. We love paintings and photographic prints. We love holding records in our hands, because a record explodes time and space. Our record is an invitation. A single day in Jordan Hall magically expands; the day becomes longer and the walls of the hall grow wider, so that everyone can enter in.
As with any Kickstarter campaign, it's an all or nothing deal. If we don't reach our target, we won't receive any funds. But we're confident that we'll meet our goal, and that the albums and other rewards will be in your hands by May 2016.
Thank you.

NY Jazz guitarist Michael Valeanu's Next Album

A new album from one of the rising voices on Jazz guitar.

A letter to you :

My name is Michael Valeanu and I'm a NY based Jazz guitarist, born in Paris France. For my Kickstarter project I am asking  you to help me fund the creation of my next album. For this new project I wrote music that encompasses many of my influences and that reflects who I am as a musician today. My goal is to raise 5000$ to produce the CD and release it in January 2015. Making an album is a long process and a meticulous task that involves not only artists, but also studios, engineers, managers...etc. All those people need to be coordinated and each step of this process needs to be addressed with the same attention.

Step 1 : Musicians, Rehearsals and Recording

For this new album the band will feature Jake Sherman on Organ, Jake Goldbas on the drums and Jazz vocalist rising star Cyrille Aimée as a special guest. First we'll need to spend time in a studio to learn and refine the music. Then we'll need to spend another day or two in a recording studio where an engineer will be working with us.
In order to rehearse and record the music properly I would need 3000$.

Step 2 : Mixing, Mastering and Printing the Album

Mixing and mastering are crucial steps in creating an album because they give the final shape to its sound. The mixing engineer balances each instrument and makes sure their tone are rendered in the most beautiful way. The mastering engineer comes eventually to round-off the mixing engineer's work and makes the music sound the way you'll hear it through your speakers or headphones.
To mix and master this album I will need 1000$
The remaining 1000 $ will be spent in creating a design for the cover and to print the first hard-copies of this CD.
By pledging to my Kickstarter  you'll be one of the producers of this new album and a major help in going through all these steps.
Thank you,
Michael Valeanu.

Kickstarter: LISA CASALINO'S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED 2ND STUDIO ALBUM!

First let me say THANK YOU SO MUCH for checking out my Kickstarter Campaign! I am so ready to get back into the studio to record my second album. I have written original material and can't wait to share it all with you. Unfortunately, I spent all of my own money on my first record, the promotion of said record and yes, ok, I bought a few cute performance outfits too...but Hey, a girls gotta look the part, n'est pas? Needless to say, I am now asking my family, friends and fans to help me finance this next album. The last record cost approximately $15,000 to create, promote, distribute, etc. Most people may not truly realize what's involved in creating a radio ready quality record. Artist who are backed by labels spend hundreds of thousand of dollars on studio time, musicians, mixing, mastering, artwork, rights, distribution, marketing, advertising, etc. I willingly admit as well, that I am not completely aware of all that is involved which is why I hire the experts to help me create and achieve my goal. I learned so much with my first studio album that I feel more confident and prepared to record once again!!! It's going on 3 years since my last record and as you all know, time is fleeting. I am not getting any younger. I am extremely proud of how well my first record was received. I had many wonderful reviews! It still has radio play. I am still selling downloads on iTunes, hard copies at my shows and recently I was given MY OWN STATION on PANDORA!! Baby steps... but I am getting there!! Most importantly to keep moving forward with my music career and future Grammy Wins, I need a NEW PRODUCT! This is where YOU can make ALL The Difference!! Please be a part of this dream of mine and help me Finance this project! Your contribution means the world to me and I promise I will make you proud! God Bless!

The Microscopic Septet is raising money to fund the recording of its first new CD since Friday The 13th: The Micros Play Monk

Background: In 2010, The Microscopic Septet ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund the recording and post-production of a new CD of our arrangements of tunes by Thelonious Monk. Thanks to you, we successfully raised $10,000 and went on to record Friday The 13th: The Micros Play Monk. The record was universally praised, was featured on many critics’ best of the year lists, and led to the Microscopic Septet being listed as #6 on that year’s Downbeat International Critic’s Poll (see below for a few samples of reviews). It’s work we are really proud of and we thank those who contributed – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Tineke Postma & Greg Osby: stellar union on a new album! Pre-order on Kickstarter!

Tineke Postma & Greg Osby: stellar union on a new album! Pre-order on Kickstarter!

The USA jazz star Greg Osby and noted Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma both alt and soprano saxophone players join forces to create a gem album featuring their own compositions. They are now powering this album on the world famous Kickstarter giving a chance to their fans and all the jazz lovers on the planet to become a part of their stunning CD. Click here to support this new album!

In this album Osby’s modern energetic, electric and acoustics conceptual music meets the melodic European influences of Tineke. The line-up is spiced with modern jazz and Indian rhythms of the drummer Dan Weiss, improvisation master pianist Matt Mitchell and a young bass virtuoso Linda Oh. The union of minds, concepts and visions on this CD guarantees to yield stellar results.

What makes this album special:

- There will be many features with two altos and two sopranos. A recording with two soprano saxophones has almost never been done; it’s pretty uncommon
- Intriguing mix of the male/female ingredients from Greg and Tineke. Times have changed, jazz is not anymore a male dominated music style
- Greg was Tineke’s mentor once, now Greg admits they are peers and he has a lot to learn from her
- It is a multicultural project uniting the greatest young musicians from the NYC scene, the Netherlands and Australia. Every musician in this group with his/her cultural background will have an equal input. It's a true cultural exchange in knowledge, approaches and concepts

And…

- This is the first album of Tineke in the last 3 years and for the first time she records as a co-leader (with Greg Osby)
- You will hear the new musical developments of Tineke influenced by her long stays in NYC and performances with great artists of the USA jazz scene
- This CD will contain hip, modern, groovy music

Jazz Nativity 2013 in English and Spanish Kickstarter

Hello To Our Wonderful  Jazz Nativity Friends
For 28 years we’ve produced the only jazz-opera telling of the Christmas story, and every year two things are true:

    People love it  ....  and
We are barely able to make it happen !!!

The experience is about joy, jazz, and a holiday experience that crosses religious, social, and cultural boundaries. But the production is about costumes, lights, rentals, and in a word: money.
This year is extra special AND extra challenging because we have a vision for producing not only our “classic” Jazz Nativity, but also our Spanish version.
Twice the goodness
Twice the financial burden.
That’s why we need your help.

We are an extremely small non-profit with extremely big goals.
For the love of jazz, for the love of the Hispanic culture, for the love of Christmas, for the love of New York and its world-class musicians who make this possible, help fund the one and only (well, now the two and only, we hope) Jazz Nativity.
What follows is a bit of our story, our history and vision.
What follows after that, we hope, is a click of support from you, a click to your friends, a click to your Facebook friends.
Please post it on your Facebook.
Literally, every single dollar makes a difference.

A Kickstarter campaign has rewards and we have some RARE ones for you!

Thank you so much for your participation

Archie Shepp Attica Blues new release - Kickstarter campaign

Hello Dear Friends!

Forty years after the release of Attica Blues, Archie Shepp revisits this monument of jazz history with a new big band of 26, composed of a mix of experienced artists and young jazz musicans from the United States and France. The goal is to record the next two concerts in southern France and release a historic live Attica Blues Big Band album.

In order to raise the remaining funds necessary in the production of this album, we have put together a Kickstarter campaign through which you can participate, contribute and get a great deal of goodies in return!

By contributing, you are not only directly involved in the production of a CD by a jazz legend, but you also get to pre-order a physical or electronic copy of the new album as well as other great rewards!

Find out more about this historic project at:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/archieshepp/attica-blues

Thank you all for your support - by contributing and sharing this with your friends, this album will become a reality!
