Adil & Vasundhara to play at the Jazzmandu 2012 festival
The year has shaped up pretty well for Adil & Vasundhara so far. Their album release is imminent and has currently been handed over for mastering to one of the biggest names in the business [all details revealed here soon]; they have had a very active gigging schedule, playing on stages both Indian and international and now A&V will be at the Kathmandu Jazz Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Django Reinhardt Festival All-Stars coming to Hanover
One man credited with bringing it along nicely these days is French guitarist (and Reinhardt look-alike) Dorado Schmitt. He's been bringing the Django Reinhardt Festival All-Stars to the United States on a regular basis, and their current tour will see them perform at The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts at 5 p.m. Sunday. NEPAL: Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2012
Beat Kaestli and Ben Stivers will be here to entertain with their performances which mix traditional Jazz, R&B influences, Latin rhythms as well as European Folk songs, all done in a jazzy way. Kaestli is a vocalist, songwriter, arranger and producer living in New York City. He was awarded a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music (BM) and the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation Scholarship by the Society of Singers. In 2008, he graduated with a Masters Degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music. Following the release of his acclaimed CD ‘Happy, Sad and Satisfied’ in 2006, he’s touring the world extensively with his own projects, showcasing his music in renowned clubs and at festivals across the US, Europe, Mexico and Canada.

NEPAL: Jazz competition @ Kathmandu
Day 1 of Surya Jazzmandu 2011 saw three stellar local bands – The KJC Quartet, All My Friends, and The KJC Power Trio – putting on a feast of music as they competed in the Jazz for the Next Generation band competition. The bands played for a packed auditorium at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) in Jhamsikhel, and were judged by a panel of five visiting Jazzmandu musicians. With the wealth of talent and ability on display, the judges faced some difficult decisions, and finally selected All My Friends as the outstanding band, with Abhishek Bhadra, the keyboard player for the band, also being named outstanding musician.

NEPAL: Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2011
KATHMANDU: Formed in early 2011 by musicians teaching at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC), Jhamsikhel, the KJC Faculty Combo plays music from a diverse range of musical genres with a few surprises thrown into them. The musicians’ line-up for the group is flexible and takes many forms depending on who is available. However, Subani Moktan and Olivia James on vocals, Inap Raj Shrestha on saxophone, Misun Kim on keyboards, Mahesh Tandukar on guitar, Hemraj Chettri Nepal on drums and Marcus Dengate on bass make the primary members of this group.
At Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2011, this group is going to groove slow jazz to funk jazz. They will also be doing a few swings as well.
Sharing on what the band is dishing out to the audience at the jazz festival, Shrestha said, “We will be doing cover numbers and playing both songs and instrumentals numbers.”
To find out what cover numbers they will be rendering, one will have to be a part of the festival.
These musicians are talented and versatile alongside their extensive teaching at KJC and performance experiences.
Having some fun along the way, showcasing musical abilities of each member and repertoires among the students of KJC and potential students through concerts at schools throughout the Kathmandu valley is the main objective of the band.
They believe in promoting and cultivating jazz appreciation among the general public and it is the basic idea of performing in Jazzmandu this year. “We are a jazz school and Jazzmandu is a jazz festival. Our participation is a must and we too want to give a positive message through our participation,” opined Shrestha.
Spreading the knowledge of jazz, the band is looking forward to their debut performance at Jazzmandu.
Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2011 is scheduled from October 20 to 25 and will be held in different venues across the Capital. The Himalayan Times is the official media of the festival. (The Himalayan Times)
