The musically vibrant and culturally rich city of Havana, Cuba, has been selected to serve as the 2017 Global Host City, presented each year on April 30th. "UNESCO is proud to be associated once again with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, as well as with the Instituto Cubano de la Música to raise the flag for jazz, for freedom, for creativity, for diversity and for unity. This year's focus on Cuba is testament to the power of jazz to build bridges and join women and men together around shared values and aspirations", said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO.

Many acclaimed musicians and educators from Cuba and around the world will participate in free jazz performances, master classes, improvisational workshops, jam sessions and community outreach initiatives. Programs will take place at schools, arts venues, community centers, jazz clubs and parks across the city of Havana and throughout Cuba beginning on Monday, April 24th and leading up to the festivities on April 30th. Additionally, jazz history and education programs will be provided for tens of thousands of students in over 11,000 schools across Cuba. These programs will be among the thousands of International Jazz Day live performances, educational activities, and community service programs taking place in more than 190 countries on all continents.

Herbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, said: "Afro-Cuban jazz and its rich history have played a pivotal role in the evolution and enrichment of the entire jazz genre. The incomparable trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie along with beloved Cuban musicians Mario Bauzá, Machito and Chano Pozo, infused American jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms to create a brand new, energetic sound that defined modern music. We are so pleased that Havana, Cuba, will serve as the Global Host City for International Jazz Day 2017. On behalf of the worldwide family of jazz musicians, educators and enthusiasts, I would like to thank the citizens of Havana and Cuba for their enormous support of this truly global musical art form."
The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is once again working with UNESCO and its field offices, national commissions, networks, associated schools, universities and institutes, public radio and public television stations, and NGOs to ensure their involvement and participation in International Jazz Day 2017. Additionally, in countries throughout the world, libraries, schools, universities, performing arts venues, community centers, artists, and arts organizations of all disciplines will be celebrating the day through presentations, concerts, and other jazz-focused programs.

The celebration in Havana of the International Jazz Day in 2017 marks the seventieth anniversary of Cuba's accession to UNESCO and the foundation of the National Commission for UNESCO.

I NEVER META GUITAR TOO (solo guitars for the XXI Century) (Clean Feed 2012)

This is the second volume of “I Never Meta Guitar”, an ongoing compilation dedicated to the guitar, in its various possibilitiess and persuasions. It’s organized by one of the masters of this instrument, Elliott Sharp, and that says much about the content. All the pieces included are originals, and all of them were recorded by guitarists, among the «celebrated» and the «unsung», as Sharp puts himself, who have something special to say. Ava Mendoza, Ben Tyree, On Ka’a Davis, Shouwang Zhang, Joel Harrison, Yasuhiro Usui, Steve Cardenas, Marco Cappelli, Alan Licht, David Grubbs, Han Tammen, Zach Layton, Thomas Maos, Zachary Pruitt, Richard Carrick, and Manuel Mota are now the chosen ones. The result is like a tapestry of the best and most advanced guitar music being played today, be it acoustic, electro-acoustic, electric or entering the electronic field. You’ll finally understand how tendencies in procedures and aesthetics are being organized and you’ll find out some tracks enlightening as to what the future can be. A document you can’t ignore and one to be savored.

Musical Visionary Terri Lyne Carrington of Hebert-Carrington Media to perform at China's Jz Music Festival October 26 (Shanghai) & 28 (Beijing)

Groove Jazz Media logo
Musical Visionary Terri Lyne Carrington of
Hebert-Carrington Media to perform at China's Jz Music Festival
October 26 (Shanghai) & 28 (Beijing)

Comprehensive 4-CD Compilation and Video
Produced as a Festival Exclusive

GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lynn Carrington is set to perform at China's premiere music event, the eighth annual Jz Music Festival, the third largest jazz festival in Asia.  The Boston based Carrington will perform Friday, October 26 in Shanghai (Shanghai Centre Theatre) and Sunday, October 28 in Beijing (Yu Gong Yi Shan Live House).

Carrington will gather a distinct mix of like-minded musical colleagues in two configurations for this special occasion including: Nona Hendryx, Niki Harris, Helen Sung, Tineke Postma, Ingrid Jensen and Tamir Shmerling -- performing music from The Mosaic Project, which won the 2012 GRAMMY® Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and with "PassWord", a contemporary jazz and vocals quartet featuring Frank McComb, Dwight Sills and Chris Walker.

Carrington reflects, "Music is the ultimate communication medium. It brings worlds and cultures together, helping to make Earth a connected community. We are excited about the potential to do much more in China; and hope this is the first of many visits here. We also hope to launch new collaborations with Chinese musicians and companies, and we will be reaching out to China through the next years, whether in commerce, cultural or educational exchange, or just in our expression of continuing friendship."

"On behalf of the Jz Festival Director Mr. Ren Yuqing and the staff of Jz Music it is my honor to pay tribute to the Jing An District Government of Shanghai for hosting Jz Festival 2012 Master Hall.  Without the support of Jing An, plus the support of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, and the Foreign Affairs Office of the City of Shanghai it would not have been possible to present to the residents of China the world class music that is to be presented on stage this week at the Shanghai Centre Theatre," says Mark Elliott, Head of International for Jz Music. "The Jz Festival is now in its 8th year.  It is the largest Jazz Festival in China.  The combined efforts of many partners contributes to enhanced cultural exchange and understanding between China and our friends and colleagues internationally.  Music is the international language that unites us all.  Thus it is my great honor to work with Hebert-Carrington Media (HCM) to present the forthcoming performance of Terri Lyne Carrington. Ms. Carrington brought 9 musicians to China this year, and she will be performing in both the Shanghai (October 26th) and Beijing (October 28th) portions of this year's festival.  She will give a world debut of her contemporary jazz group "Password" followed with the all-star female cast of reputed jazz musicians performing music from her 2012 GRAMMY® Award-winning Mosaic Project.  I wish, and I am sure, that the show will be an unprecedented success."

States Robert Hebert, CEO of Hebert-Carrington Media, "When Terri Lyne and I started our company at the end of 2006, we had this vision and mission for Hebert-Carrington Media (HCM) / GrooveJazz Media: Let's assume that 50 million people in the world have been exposed to Miles Davis' classic Sketches of Spain or Kind of Blue CDs. We believe that, if the other 6.6 billion (now, 7 billion) people in the world could be exposed to these recordings at some point in time in their lives, quite a few of them would commercially support this caliber of art - provided it was easily accessible to them via all the various emerging media distribution channels. Hebert-Carrington Media wants to associate itself with music recordings, media and artists for which the (foregoing) statement can be similarly made."

HCM/GrooveJazz Media prepared a Jz Music Festival exclusive, limited edition package - GrooveJazz China: Creativity Without Boundaries - a 4 disc-set compilation of music and video that shares Terri Lyne Carrington's musical vision, and underscores her reach as a global music ambassador.  The music of HCM/GrooveJazz Media's expansive network of musical colleagues, (nine members of whom are appearing at the festival with Carrington) is featured.  In addition, HCM/GrooveJazz Media provided the opportunity for their Brazil musical associates to join in sharing music with the Chinese business and music community.  The compilation features music from artists such as Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ivan Lins, Oscar Castro-Neves, Toninho Horta, George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Les McCann, Carlos Santana, Dianne ReevesNona HendryxRomero Lubambo, Arthur Maia and Seu Jorgeand the late, great maestro himself, Miles Davis, courtesy of Sony Music.

Carrington has just completed work on her next recording project titled Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, her much anticipated homage to Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the release of their iconic 1963 Money Jungle album.  The upcoming February 2013 release features Christian McBride and Gerald Clayton, with special appearances by the legendary Clark TerryHerbie Hancock and Lizz Wright.

"We are pleased and honored to celebrate the upcoming release of Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue and look forward to what will surely be an important artistic statement," says Mark Wexler, General Manager and Senior Vice President of the Concord-Telarc Group. "Terri Lyne's vision, creativity and talent are undeniable, and we are proud to be associated with such an outstanding artist."
