USA: International Women in Jazz Go Fund Me Campaign

International Women in Jazz
Go Fund Me Campaign

shem.gif
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN JAZZ, INC. (IWJ) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting women jazz artists and related professionals by increasing awareness of the diverse contributions women make to jazz worldwide. Through our programs, IWJ provides opportunities for emerging and experienced talent to be recognized by their peers, the public and larger jazz community. Our member network creates a forum to share and learn from one another, promote one’s work and receive timely information and assistance. We are a unique organization with a profound history of event-driven recognition activities positively impacting the jazz community’s young and old. We stand dedicated to actively ensuring a place for women as a vital part of jazz’s past, present and future. To learn more about IWJ’s history, please visit our website: www.internationalwomeninjazz.org and click on the tab About IWJ.

Why are we asking for your help? This year our preeminent Annual IWJ Festival was sidelined for the first time due to escalating costs and a decline in funding from limited grant offerings and corporate sponsorships. Facing shrinking financial resources, it was not possible for us to deliver this signature annual event. In 2018, our total revenue for this wonderful event dropped by 60% from the previous year, primarily due to external funding resources. Therefore, we are setting a 2020 Annual Festival fundraising goal of $10,000.

Why is the IWJ Festival annual event so important? Every year our intergenerational audience continues to increase as we recognize, honor and celebrate one or more women who have made a significant contribution to the jazz community. Our headliners, member musician and youth performances illustrate the powerful connection between our wonderful jazz legacy and those who continue to innovate and carry it forward. Our event includes jam sessions, table talks, networking, educational components and seminars, and vendor representation. Our Annual Festival is more than an event…it is an inspiring experience for our wonderfully talented, aspiring female artists and Youth in Action participants, for those on stage and in the audience!

Here are just some examples of our past youth award recipients:
• Leonieke Scheuble, dedicated her CD titled “Debut” to IWJ by acknowledging her achievement as the 2013 International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Award Winner. Today, Leonieke is leading her own band.
• Wé McDonald, our 2016 Youth in Action award winner went on to win second runner up on the 11th season of The Voice.
• Camille Thurman, our 2009 Youth in Jazz award winner, is known today as a composer, instrumentalist, vocalist and interpreter of the jazz tradition; and,
• Charenee Wade – singer, composer, arranger and educator - and winner of the 1st IWJ Youth-in-Jazz Award returned twenty years later to headline our 2018 Festival.

Please see our Galleries page at www.internationalwomeninjazz.org.

Our annual festival has been one of our core membership offerings. It allows us to bring jazz music to the community – young and old – on the largest scale possible. Imagine the sadness and disbelief our members and supporters experienced when hearing our major performance platform had been sidelined.

Will this impact the future of IWJ? We want you to know that although we are facing some current financial headwinds our spirit is alive and well. To keep us current and in the mix, we have been utilizing our funds for smaller scale events at local community venues that feature open mic sessions creating opportunities for our members, supporters and the general public. We continue to disseminate information and promote our member’s events and achievements through direct email and our social media sites. We rely on the generous help of volunteers to enhance our website, social media and other services as we better identify the needs and interests of our members. And we continue to explore additional financial resources as they become available to fund our existing offerings and create new possibilities.

Why your contribution is so important? We need to continue to support, educate and nurture our young artists and offer jazz appreciation for all ages as part of our mission and tradition. The IWJ Festival epitomizes the heart and soul of our existence. Our love for jazz and commitment to its future is profound – that is why we are appealing to you for your contributions. We cannot just rely on the revenue we receive from membership dues, local events and limited grant monies alone.

Our appeal is to our membership and supporters, domestic and international musicians, youth jazz students, composers, and jazz enthusiasts…music schools, educators, foundations, music venues, record labels, recording industry artists, broadcast professionals, business owners, music management professionals, other like organizations and individuals just like you.

Please help us bring back our Annual International Women in Jazz Festival for Jazz Appreciation Month, April 2020. IWJ is planning now to secure venues, musicians, etc. to continue our efforts to showcase Jazz as an American art form, and to honor, recognize and support women artists who keep it legendary and current. On behalf of our dedicated members, board of directors and as president of IWJ, thank you in advance for your tax-deductible contribution in any amount. Let’s continue the music together!

CROWDFUNDING: Organic Natural - Jazz With Dandelions and Leaves The First Jazz Album Played On Plants Ever Recorded

Organic Natural is the first Jazz album where plants are used as instruments.
Dandelions, nut tree leaves, maple tree leaves, ivy leaves, willow leaves, grasses and twigs and a small djembe were the only "instruments" I played. I picked them in my neighborhood, Damaroaia, on the outskirts of Bucharest, some in my own backyard.
These humble gifts from nature all have their own souls and sounds, and I hope this album will give you joy and also remind you of how vital nature is for all of us.

Hello,

I am asking for your support and generosity to fulfill my numerous artistic projects.

The funds raised will allow me to finance many of my musical and artistic projects. Among other things, this money will be used to hire various professionals, like a graphic designer to create a vinyl box set and a photo book. Part will be used for my living expenses.

Let me introduce myself

Truly creative, deeply intuitive, visionary, absolutely eccentric, totally inhabited by the arts, always amazed and eternal optimistic, I play as I breathe.
Here is a recent review from my latest album :

Andy Ezrin co arranged the music with me over the course of 2016. At the top of 2017, 8 time Grammy Award winning Engineer, Elliot Schiener, and I were presented with a wonderful chance to record the music at my alma mater, Berklee College of Music's Shames Family Scoring Stage, as part of an educational exchange. Suddenly everything had to be pulled together in 2 weeks. Lucky for us, Matt Penman, Jared Schonig, and Ingrid Jensen joined Andy, Elliot and I in the race to Boston. USA/SPAIN: Crossing Borders with Eva Cortés

Crossing Borders together...I need your support and I am so thankful to know you'll be on this journey with me.

I was born into a musical family that exposed me to Soul, Funk, Flamenco, Opera and Jazz. While Jazz is my mainstay, I create music that goes beyond conventional parameters and genres.

It took three years to put this album together. It began when I decided to leave my home country of Spain and moving to NYC. It took time in making the adjustment, but I am now very happy to have made it my home. While here, I have had the honor to work with musicians on this album, that I have admired for many years. - Roby Ameen :Drums,  Jon Cowherd: Piano,  Pepe Rivero: Piano,  Luques Curtis: Upright Bass, Marvin Sewell: Guitar,  Luisito Quintero: Percussions,  Roman Filiu: Sax/ Flute,  Doug Beavers: Trombone, Jonathan Powell: Trumpet, Christian McBride: Upright Bass.
The title track Crossing Borders, was inspired by an event that took place on October 03, 2013, off the southern Italian island Lampedusa, where a boat containing African migrants caught fire and sank. 300 of the passengers had drowned  or were feared dead as a result.
This will be my seventh  album. One that shows my continued growth as an artist, touches on my thoughts and feelings of the world today and sends out positive energy and good vibes for all to enjoy.

USA: Korean Jazz Composer Launches Indiegogo to Finish Her Big Band Album

Korean Jazz Composer Launches Indiegogo to Finish Her Big Band Album

New York—Composer and Arranger Hyeseon Hong announces the launch of her jazz orchestra album entitled “Ee-Ya-Gi” which is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo.

“I’m thrilled to finally get this music out to be heard by a larger audience! Each of these pieces represents a story from my life,” said Hyeseon Hong, composer and leader. “We’ve put in countless hours to make this album a breath taking listening experience for both our listeners and our fans”.

Joining Hyeseon on her album are two jazz giants and veterans of the New York music scene: saxophonist Rich Perry, and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.  They both play beautifully throughout the entire album and are also featured soloists. As Hyeseon’s first big band release, the album features her compositions which blend elements of classical music, modern jazz big band and Korean traditional music.  Her music contains strong melodies with harmonically-rich, impressionistic backgrounds.
As an artist Ms. Hong also seeks to share the uniqueness of her own Korean cultural experience with others, raising awareness of both the differences and similarities between the east and the west, and fostering musical dialogue which will lead to better understanding and communication. “There’s a deep connection between jazz and Korean people…jazz first came to Korea during the Korean War. The blues found in jazz has a similar feeling as traditional Korean music which expresses pain through cries and reprises.”

Hyeseon’s Indiegogo campaign has 45 days left with a funding goal of $7,000. Reward options range from $5 to $1000, with $15 and up receiving the early release album in May 2017. All funds raised will be used directly for the album production, publicity and release.

About Hyeseon Hong
Hyeseon Hong is an accomplished composer, arranger and pianist. She currently composes music for the Hyeseon Hong Jazz Orchestra which she also leads and conducts. She is an integral part of the Korean music scene, where she previously led a choir group to acclaim as well as composing for a number of different projects from classical to jazz and commercial settings.  Growing up in Seoul, she attended the prestigious Yonsei University where she studied classical composition and piano. Moving to New York she earned a masters at NYU where she studied with Maria Schneider, Mike Hollober, Jim McNeely, Del Tredici, and bassist Ron Carter.

USA: Hamiet Bluiett's Recovery by Anaya Bluiett - GoFundMe

My name is Anaya Bluiett and I am the grand daughter of Hamiet Bluiett, world known Baritone saxophonist. Recently, he's been hospitalized for several months because he has had numerous strokes and seizures. He was in the critical intensive care unit, then the hospital and two rehabs to help him get back to himself but it's still going to take some time. I am trying to raise money for him for his bills and traveling expenses, since he no longer will be able to work. I'm working on moving him back to Saint Louis from New York, where he is currently living. I've been traveling back and forth to take care of him. He doesn't like asking people for help, but sometimes that's what you have to do, to be able to help yourself. He's been playing the baritone saxophone for decades and music is what he loves more than anything. For him to have to retire is going to be the most difficult part to deal with for him. If there's anything you'll can do to help, it would be greatly appreciated. You can look him up on google to find out any more information about him that you would like to know. Thank you.

USA: Harpur Jazz Ensemble Launches Fundraising Initiative to Enhance the Music Program Experience

The Binghamton University Jazz Ensemble Alumni Are Rallying to Help Support the Program During Difficult Budgetary Times.

The Alumni of Binghamton University has launched a crowdfunding initiative to keep the Harpur Jazz Ensemble thriving for generations to come.
The Harpur Jazz Ensemble is a group of talented and passionate students who study and perform big-band repertoire for the community and student body. Over the years they have frequently appeared on and off campus with special guest musicians; including: Clark Terry—one of the most recorded musicians in the history of jazz; "Slam" Stewart--jazz bass player; Rufus Reid, a virtuoso of the upright bass;" and Sherrie Maricle and Tia Fuller, both high profile contemporary creative jazz artists.
The Jazz Ensemble has an enormous impact on civic programs in the local community as well as on undergraduates of all different academic programs.
"Our ensemble doesn't just give these kids an education in music theory, technique, and history. It's an education in community," explains Alumni and crowdfunding organizer Ben Wood. “The friendships and connections we create are for life.”
The intent of the campaign is to raise funds for new instruments, upgraded technology, and better rooms and furniture so they can continue to spark the love for music and its many intellectual benefits in others.
Music has been shown to promote brain activity, increase focus, help with understanding and analyzing visual information, and even builds self-confidence—all traits necessary to succeed in both academics and life.
"It [music] influences our emotions, makes us think in different ways, and teaches us how to work together,” says Wood. “I would hate to see something so all-encompassing and vital be unavailable to all the students who share this passion for music."
Make a gift now http://www.binghamton.edu/promo/crowd-funding/harpur-jazz-ensemble.html and help the next generation discover a creative outlet they might never have considered.

The Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2 strikes back with soaring melodies, cosmic funky grooves, and epic symphonic landscapes.
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!!!
Thank you so much for checking out my brand new project! I have spent a great deal of time preparing this album for release and it is by far the most cool, slammin', epic record that I have created thus far. I need for as many people as possible to hear this album and REALLY need help with funds for advertising. It is great to do a project and complete the process but advertising is where the rubber meets the road. With your generous contributions I can take things to the next level! Please pledge what you can and I appreciate your time. Read more about the project below:
Colin Trusedell’s new album, “Quartet of Jazz Death VOL. 2,” marks the return of the internationally acclaimed funk and fusion group, Quartet of Jazz Death, with 11 brand new original compositions. Trusedell takes the electric bass sound to the next level by experimenting even further with polyphonic octave effects and his SUPER SYNTH bass sounds!
Compositionally, Trusedell pulled from his classical background utilizing a set of full orchestra sounds throughout the new album mixed with phat and nasty grooves. The band is as tight as ever as the band lived with the tunes for over a year before recording them.
The album has a wide range of appeal utilizing some featured guests like the smooth and voluptuous vocals of Krista Joyce, the tight syncopated rapping of Demoh, and the energetic fusion saxophone provided by John Dawson.
The Quartet of Jazz Death core members consist of some of the best and most well-know musicians in Colorado; Stefan Flores on drum set, Steve Langemo on electric guitar, Shawn Hanlon on keyboards and synthesizer, and Colin Trusedell on electric bass.
Soaring melodies, funky grooves, drum & bass electro/fusion jazz music, played by amazing musicians filling your ears with awesome music!

Synopsis

"La voix est libre" is a poetic documentary that explores the mechanisms of improvisation in all its forms: instrumental music, slam, dance, traditional music, jazz, circus arts, painting... In the age of the internet, a daily battle is being waged from Paris to Beirut, via Tunis, against standardization and obscurantism, a constant struggle to maintain a thirst for curiosity and the unexpected, to defend creative freedom and support artistic interconnections. Whether in a park in the Barbès neighborhood of Paris, at the seaside in Beirut, or on the rooftops of Sidi Bou Saïd in northern Tunisia, this film seeks to shine a light on these hot spots of resistance and shared aspirations, focusing on the innovative festivals La Voix est Libre (Paris), Irtijal (Beirut), and Chantier Libre (Tunis, Le kef). This documentary takes art as a point of departure to question the state of the world today. It is a militant film, a manifesto on improvisation in all its facets; a celebration of the ephemeral in art, of confronting the moment. It is an invitation to travel and to encounter the undefined in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa in the company of artists of diverse nationalities.

KICKSTARTER: UKk: To get the new mobile listings app/site 'JazzLondonLive' up & running we need some upfront support from the jazz community!

About this project

JazzLondonLive is a new digital resource devised to fill the void left by jazz lovers' monthly booklet.

Sarah Chaplin (aka @jazzsez) is working with Mick Sexton to put an exciting and informative new app/site together, which will give people access to what’s on in the jazz world every day of the year all over London, as well as insights into who’s who in the London jazz scene, plus links to news and reviews, band personnel, tour dates, festival announcements and more. We launched JazzLondonLive on 1 June 2016 with a temporary wordpress site while we are raising funds to build the database engine that will power an amazing app, set to go live on 1 Sept 2016.

That's where you come in. Obviously, in order to get something like this off the ground, we need some upfront commitment from the jazz community, for which you will be handsomely rewarded. To this end, we hope that one of the reward options will appeal to you and that you will want to show your support for this new service for jazz lovers.

However you decide to support us, we will organise a big meet-up for all the backers to say thank you to everyone - most likely this will take place during the final weekend of the EFG London Jazz Festival in November.

KICKSTARTER: "Notes from the Spirit" will be an album of original jazz music by Tom Rubenoff.

Notes from the Spirit

Hi, I’m Tom Rubenoff.
Some people say that emotions are the means our spirits use to communicate with us. The album title, “Notes from the Spirit” comes from  my performance style.  When I play or sing I get out of the way and let what’s inside me shine through.
I’ve been writing and performing music and poetry for about fifty years, and in that time I have acquired many talented friends.  Some of these gifted friends have joined me to form an amazing band for this project.  I have included their bios below.  After the bios there are excerpts of a couple of the songs we have already recorded.  Besides these great friends I have Little Dog Studio to record in, and plenty of music that I've written, just waiting to be recorded.
I love being in the studio and making music with these guys. It is so much fun. Everybody is making their creative contribution to evolve each piece into what it wants to be. The result is an art form called jazz, each piece special unique to that session. Each player rewrites their own part as we play. The experience is priceless.
The project is to record nine or so of my compositions at Little Dog Studio over three or so sessions to take place between June and November 2016, add these pieces to three we have already recorded and produce a piece of art, a lovingly crafted album of original music full of joy and surprise that you will love to hear.
All the right creative ingredients are available.   When the funding is in place I am confident that the project will be a success.  But it won't go anywhere without you.   I have run the numbers and "Notes from the Spirit" is only possible if it is funded.  This is where you can make a big difference.  We need at least $8,000 to pay for studio time, musicians and production.
Time is also a factor.  It is very fortunate that these uniquely talented individuals and Little Dog Studio are available to do this now.  We need funding now to lock in a recording schedule.  If we do not, this wonderful opportunity will soon fade away.  We need you.  Please help us with your generous contribution. Thank you.
Please take a glance at the rewards we will be offering for your donation, including CD's, downloads, videos and experiences.  If you are viewing this on a mobile device they may not be immediately visible, but you can access them from the menu.
I am here on Kickstarter because I cannot fund this project myself.  I need your help.   Please support our effort to create this album. Thanks again.
Special thanks to David Leifer for his help with the videos. This next one is me and bassist Dan Fox at Ryles Jazz Club playing my tune, "No I Don't Miss You."

Kickstarter: USA:Karen Shane's 2nd Jazz Vocal CD - "The Moon is Blue"

I've been wanting to make my second jazz vocal recording for over five years.  I'm sure most of you know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day of work, family and other commitments while putting one's dreams on the back burner until someday, maybe...
My desire to get back into the studio kept coming to the surface and I am so happy that the wheels were finally set in motion.
With all of my planning, including making song choices, collaborating with my producer/arranger/pianist, practicing tunes, and working out so many details (not to mention multiple revisions to my timeline), this opportunity to express myself musically has finally come to fruition.
I am blessed to have so many wonderful, world class musicians on my recording.  I can't wait to share these "jazz standards" with you.

CROWDFUNDING/AUSTRALIA: Bart Stenhouse

Join with emerging Australian world jazz fusion artist Bart Stenhouse as he releases two albums and plans a live DVD launch!

Check out: www.pozible.com/bartstenhouse

Double World Jazz Fusion Crowdfunding Campaign!

Hey Guys, My name is Bart Stenhouse and I am a Northern Rivers (NSW but originally from Brisbane, Australia) based jazz/fusion composer and multi-instrumentalist (electric/flamenco guitar and electric mandolin).

I recorded two original jazz fusion albums earlier this year that I am trying to release with the help of a Pozible Crowdfunding Campaign. They blend North Indian, Flamenco, Funk, Rock and Jazz roots in the same vein texturally/musically as Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and co (i.e my influences and inspirations as I am sure many in here might share).

We are currently off to a great start at 44% funding after only 11 days but still have a long way to go to reach our target. I hope you can jump onboard to pick up some new albums or other awesome rewards and help us to get these albums out there as well as shoot them live in concert for the DVD!

USA: The Last Note: Document 50 Figures in Jazz and Blues with the Jazz Foundation and photographer Richard Corman

The Last Note: A Film Project to Document Jazz and Blues in America
To Our Friends and Supporters,
We are happy to announce a new project: the Jazz Foundation has created an Indiegogo campaign. With your help, we can produce the next historic documentation of jazz and blues in America.
Join us as we go deep inside American music, creating intimate portraits of 50 artists who have helped shape jazz and blues scenes throughout the U.S. this past century. Together, we will invite them to tell their stories, capturing on film and video the unique corners of history in which they lived and which they continue to represent. In this way, we will help to ensure the history of jazz and blues is kept alive.

We have included a detailed description of the The Last Note below.

Our goal is to raise $67,500 or more to fund this project in the next 45 days.

Please spread the word. Support on Indiegogo in any denomination is appreciated. Check out the perks!
Find our campaign here and donate now: www.igg.me/at/jfa-last-note

Additionally, we are auctioning stunning prints from Richard Corman's renowned "Madonna NYC 83" series to benefit the project.

The Last Note: A Film Project to Document 50 Great Figures in Jazz and Blues
Very often, great musicians devote themselves to their music for a lifetime but find acclaim only after they have passed. That is a loss for our culture and for our record of history. My name is Wendy Oxenhorn. As Executive Director of the Jazz Foundation of America, I have fought for 15 years to make sure professionals in jazz and blues have the resources they need to survive and continue their work. In that time, I've had the honor to know many extraordinary souls. When I see these souls pass away, I am saddened and afraid that all evidence of their lives and their works will be lost.
Last year, I met someone capable of spotlighting legendary artists for historic preservation. Richard Corman is a New York-based photographer who has traveled the globe for more than three decades capturing the essence of the human spirit. He has created definitive portraits of icons like Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Ali, Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Madonna.
With your support, Richard wants to hit the road with videographer Alan Gastelum to meet with accomplished jazz and blues musicians in their homes across the U.S. Their conversations will be filmed and photographed to produce intimate profiles documenting many of the individuals responsible for jazz and blues in the last century. From the Jazz Foundation headquarters, I will coordinate over one month of appointments with fifty of the most incredible artists I have known. In March of 2016, these portraits will become available at no cost on our website.
For every big star in music, there are also hundreds more people who made up the scene that gave that star a voice. In jazz and blues, those scenes continue to dot the country, thriving in lesser-known clubs and boisterous, invitation-only jams, in extraordinary bonds between artists, and in tireless devotion to music.
With your support, Richard and Alan will travel to Memphis, New York City, New Orleans, Detroit, and more beginning January 2016. We will meet these artists in their homes and record this oral and visual history directly from the people who lived it.
Preserve the memory of the New Orleans jazz and blues musicians displaced by Katrina. In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the Jazz Foundation worked to rehouse and create work for over 1,000 New Orleans musicians and their families. These artists live far from their New Orleans roots, but this project will ensure many of them do not fade from its history.
It rarely happens that people capable of documenting these rich dimensions of American history have the resources to do so.
  • Between 1937 and 1942, folklore scholar Alan Lomax traveled the country to meet with and record foundational artists like Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, and Jelly Roll Morton on behalf of the Library of Congress. Before him, this music was considered by many to be vulgar and primitive. Lomax fought to preserve it and give it a place in our history such as it has now.
  • In 1960, photographer William Claxton and musicologist Joachim-Ernst Berendt journeyed across America to document jazz and blues, leaving behind an invaluable trove of American culture.
Join us on this journey and please make this work possible with a contribution. Spread the word to those who share our belief: the living history of jazz and blues should not be lost.
