JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023: Igor Willcox Quartet (Brazil) – Live at Bansko Jazz Festival 2022 (Bulgaria)

Igor Willcox Quartet - Live at Bansko Jazz Festival 2022 - Bulgaria

The Brazilian Igor Willcox Quartet‘s spectacular live performance, Live at Bansko Jazz Festival 2022 (Bulgaria), took place during that year’s Bansko Jazz Festival. The four virtuosos are known for their innovative musicianship, outstanding interaction, and captivating groove, and the new release perfectly captures the intensity and vibrancy of this stunning live performance .

We hear a collection of catchy songs that were previously released on studio albums, now enhanced by the sparkling spontaneity propelled by the band’s drummer and leader, Igor Willcox, who is performing at his peak along his brilliant fellow musicians. He effortlessly switches between fast and slow rhythms, adding interesting rhythmic improvisations, mixing texture and dynamics with his known virtuosity.

The album abounds in clever and entertaining solos. Erik Escobar on keys has impressive solo interventions of great impact on “Brotherhood” , “Message From Another Dimension” , UFO, “The Scare” “Thankful” and “Room 73”. Super-Saxophonist Wagner Barbosa is all over the place unleashing his creative force either interacting with his band mates or charming us with amazing solos on “North City” and “Room 73” just to mention a few . Glecio Nascimento on bass takes the spotlight on “North City”, “Room 73”.

Overall this is an album for jazz fusion enthusiasts who will be excited to listen to a concert unique in inventiveness, dynamics and mastery.

BULGARIA/GERMANY: Alexandrina Simeon - Quintett Ocean Tales (2018)

The compositions on the latest record OCEAN TALES, released by Unit Records in early 2018, take the audience back to Alexandrina Simeon’s home country: The Bulgarian language, melodies and rhythms from former times, the musical legacy of the eastern edge of Europe, skillfully combined with western European jazz and completed with a brilliant guest performance of Benny Brown from Hamburg. Surrounding the powerful Bulgarian vocalist, the band creates true fireworks of melodies and atmospheres – Bulgarian vocal jazz at its best.

BULGARIA/USA:Hristo Vitchev Quartet - "In Search of Wonders" - The brand new and highly anticipated double album by the Hristo Vitchev Quartet

The impressionistic modern jazz guitarist from Bulgaria (now based in
San Francisco, CA) releases his 7th album as a leader this month!

The highly anticipated double album by the impressionistic Hristo
Vitchev Quartet marks the 7th release as a leader for the
internationally acclaimed guitarist.

The new compositions and sonic textures explored here, catalog the
evolution of this award winning group over the last decade, and
present a sound and style that is completely unique and truly
identifiable with the quartet. For the recording of this project the
group decided to first take the music on the road all around the
world, and let each piece evolve night after night, letting it settle
naturally and effortlessly into its final shape and place, which you
can now experience on this marvelous release.

The album is now available on First Orbit Sounds Music:

"The Wonder Man - and Friends"

For those who have discovered the compositions and artistry of
Bulgarian American Hristo Vitchev, congratulations! This new recording
is a gift to you. For those who have yet to experience the manner in
which this gifted guitarist and composer brings a new vitality and
globally significant response to jazz, this is as fine an aperitif as
any of his six CDs. IN SEARCH OF WONDERS may reference the music
Vitchev has been exploring for the past years, but it is also quite a
step forward in sophistication, as if these songs/melodies/ideas have
been gestating or brewing long enough to come into full bloom here.
And as usual the music is packaged in a quality case that features the
lushly evocative artwork of Vitchev.

The Hristo Vitchev Quartet continues with the guitar artistry of
Vitchev, the superb piano of Jasnam Daya Singh (Weber Iago), the solid
support (musically and emotionally) of Dan Robbins on bass and the
impressive contribution of Mike Shannon on drums. The sound we hear
here is a mysterious mixture of classical line, jazz technique in
approach, new age, and experimental/spiritual - blended in a manner
that is immediately recognizable as the sound of Hristo Vitchev -
Impressionism . Each of the fifteen compositions on the two discs here
are by Vitchev and his magnanimous spirit is evident in the manner in
which he distributes the solo lines equally among the quartet members.
Vitchev may supply the mood and the musical line for each song but it
is the manner in which each member of this fine ensemble explores the
possibilities of expression of that initial line that makes this music
such a sold success.

In what this listener considers his finest recording to date, Hristo
offers the following compositions on two discs:
The Transitory Nature
It May Backfire
Post Nubes
Fuchsia Brown Eyes
In Search of Wonders
Almost Home - Intro
Almost Home
Falling in Orange
Old Theme
It is Here, Somewhere
Stay (Prelude)
Stay
Without Words, As the Full Moon Shines
The Invisible Stairway
We Search For Wonders

Splendid compositions, first rate performances, and an invitation to a
spiritual place - it is all here, generously shared by the inimitable
Hristo Vitchev. Highly Recommended. - Grady Harp (Amazon Music
Critic)

New Release: Sonograms (Labor Records LAB 7090) Street Date: February 26, 2013

Mysticism, mathematics, musical watercolors and virtuosity from Eastern Europe and Germany

A Sonogram is a graphic representation of a sound from the physical world that cannot be represented in conventional musical notation. Labor Records’ new release of music from Central and Eastern Europe takes the traditional media of recorder consort, string quartet and solo piano and, with the aid of non-traditional musical notation, evokes a post-modern musical world of introspection, numerology and mysticism.

A remarkable group of Eastern Europe composers is led by the Greek/French composer Yannis Xenakis whose legendary Evryali, one of his earliest works to be derived from mathematical processes and long considered nearly unplayable, is realized here in a dynamic virtuoso performance by the Bulgarian pianist Angela Tosheva. Two early works for winds by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, among his earliest music in the tintinnabuli technique that made him famous, are realized here for recorder consort; they conjure up a mystical Eastern world that is at once very ancient and very modern. Music by the German composer, Walter Steffens (the only Western European composer in the group) includes his interpretations of four watercolors by Paul Klee interpreted in performance by recorder virtuoso Benedikta Bonitz playing multiple instruments. Works by Bulgarian and Polish composers Gheorghi Arnaoudov, Georgi Minchev and Pawel SzymaÅ„ski round out this unusual and inspiring program.

Crossing borders with the Blazin Quartet

They're grown under the sky of Amsterdam, with roots in Sarajevo, Stockholm, Sofia and London. This young band without musical boundaries is crossing borders.Blazin' Quartet just played four concerts in China!

The Blazin' Quartet about their Chinese tour: “Playing for such a open and responsive audience with a very special culture has been a blast! Amazing people with an amazing culture. One of the nicest art districts we've seen is around the Lofts at OTC in Shenzhen, with the headquarters at the Old Heaven Bookstore, where we've had a great time playing and meeting people.”

Right now, the band is touring in Serbia. They have already played 3 concerts in Belgrado, and 3 more in other parts of Serbia are coming up! The dates are:
26/10/2012 - Jazz Festival Indjija, Indjija - Serbia
27/10/2012 - Jazz Festival Sabac, Sabac, Serbia
28/10/2012 - Jazz Festival Kragujevac, Kragujevac, Serbia

After that, the band will go on to Germany to play at the MIB Jazz Festival in Bremen.

The band released their latest album Jalkan Bazz in June. Their music is just like being on a market where you can find everything: fruits, clothes, a date, cheap electronics and so on. Their diverse European background (Balkan, Scandinavia, Western-Europe) mixes in with their mutual language of jazz. And while the music relies on melody, rhythm and interplay, the absence of a chord instrument gives enough space for electronic sounds and loops.

Or as Rambo Amadeus says: "This record is cool like swimming pool"

BULGARIA: First Ethno Jazz festival in Sofia

"From October 7 to October 19 the stage of Studio 5 in the Bulgarian capital hosts performances of musicians for whom music is a way of life. The idea for this ethno jazz festival came from Bobi Yotsov, a clarinet player, Atanas Yankulov – music editor and Hilda Kazasyan - jazz singer. Over the last 18 months they have been encouraging Bulgarian musicians to share freely their ideas on the stage of Studio 5. This event gives another opportunity for the realization of such music projects. The event was opened on October 7 with a concert of “Point of view orchestra”. This is a massive music project where 13 young musicians share similar views and ideas. We learn more about the program from Alexandra Dimitrova, who is one of the organizers of the event. Miroslava Katsarova - Return of the South (2012)

"“This is a collection of my songs that I have performed in recent years. I am glad I was able to invite some of my favorite fellow musicians to write new songs together with me. I’ve been working with some of them for several years – Zhivko Petrov – piano, Hristo Yotsov – percussions and Veselin Veselinov-Eco, bass. Actually Veselin wrote most of the songs and arrangements on “Back to the South”. He is a key figure in my album, because my love for the works of Astor Piazzolla is shared by him as well. We discovered that we both liked the music of this great Argentine composer and decided to include two of his compositions in the album. The first one is entitled Vuelvo al sur while the other one is “Calambre”. "

BELGIUM: Tue 06.03, Brussels: FLAGEY JAZZ SESSIONS Boyan Vodenitcharov, Steve Houben Duo, Sal La Rocca 5tet Igloo Records' Session

Two jazz groups celebrate the release of new albums : the Vodenitcharov/Houben duo and Sal La Rocca’s new formation. The former released Darker Scales last autumn with Igloo Records, an exploration of the connections between jazz and contemporary classical, and a freewheeling experiment that reflects the musicians’ long friendship.
Double bass player Sal La Rocca has performed with Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Nathalie Loriers and Lee Konitz, among others. For his second album, It Could Be the End, he joins sax player Jacques Scharwz-Bart and Hans Van Oosterhout. Schwarz-Bart has played with musicians as different as Roy Hargrove, Me-Shell Ndegeocello, Roy Haynes, Ari Hoenig and d’Angelo. His jazz reflects his Guadaloupean origins. FLAGEY
Bulgarian pianist Boyan Vodenicharov and Belgian sax Steve Houben have released a new album entitled Darker Scales. We kick off with the piece Lime Limit.

You've heard Lime Limit, which is reminiscent of the jazz standard Limehouse Blues. The piece is authored by Steve Houben, a famous Belgian sax player and flutist. Having graduated Berklee College of Music-Boston, Steve teaches at Liege Conservatory. He's been on stage together with Toots Thielemans, Chet Baker, Mike Stern, Gerry Mulligan and many others. He's released some 40 albums, with the last one, Darker Scales, having been recorded with Bulgarian pianist Boyan Vodenicharov.

Boyan Vodenicharov is a classical pianist and a laureate of several large-scale piano contests, such as the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels. He gives solo and chamber concerts as well as teaches piano and antique keyboard instruments at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He's made dozens of albums offering the piano sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, etc. All pieces have been performed with original instruments or copies from the epoch of the above composers. He first met Steve in 1983. At the time, Boyan was invited to take part in the Queen Elizabeth Competition by playing classical music and jazz pieces. Their first album was called Les Valses.

“After recording the first album we kept giving concerts and working on new pieces," Boyan Vodenicharov explains. "At first, our task was to find a common ground. He's interested in classical music and I play jazz. After many concerts, things got to happen more naturally. Our last album has got an organic sounding. It was presented in November in Jazz Station, an old Brussels station, transformed into an art space that is both a concert hall and a jazz club. All new jazz albums are presented there. Darker Scales was included in the programme of Jazz Station, although it's not jazz in the true sense of the word. It's rather improvisations that vary between “jazz” and “no-jazz”. In fact, I don't know what you call “no-jazz”. Sometimes all names and labels are not enough to define what sounds make, because they have their own opinion and nature”.

Now back to Prof. Vodenicharov, who tells us more about teaching improvisations.
“The students and I do basic stuff. I offer them ideas from my improvisations. The course aims to introduce this kind of music to students because classical musicians are often afraid of it. I teach them how to listen to harmony, movement and phrase. If they don't follow these parameters, they can't compose anything. I suppose that every child starting to play a musical instrument improvises spontaneously. In the learning process, however, this is lost. Improvisation is a kind of link between playing and composition. This is what's most important about it!” (BNR.BG)

INDIA: Boriana Dimitrova Quartet on tour

The Boriana Dimitrova Quartet is in Chennai to woo the audience with its Bulgarian-folk influenced jazz.
The Boriana Dimitrova Quartet (Hamburg) is a West European Jazz Band, with compositions highlighting irregular rhythms and modern jazz phrasing. But there are two main ingredients that set them apart; one their founder and leader is a woman. Second, despite being highly qualified music academicians, their musical inspirations come from earthy Bulgarian folk dancing and singing! (Jazzing up Chennai SAROOP OOMMEN)
