In
2002, DIZZY GILLESPIE was posthumously inducted into the “International
Latin Music Hall of Fame” as one of the founders of the Afro-Cuban and
Latin jazz tradition. Influenced by Bauza (known as Gillespie’s musical
father), he was able to fuse Afro-American jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms
to form a burgeoning sound.
Five time Grammy Winner ARTURO O’FARRILL, pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and director of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is best known for his contributions to Latin jazz (more specifically Afro-Cuban jazz).
NEA Jazz Master and Memphis Hall of Fame Inductee GEORGE COLEMAN, saxophonist, composer, arranger has performed with jazz’s most legendary figures and influenced countless saxophonists during his half century in music.
The WILBUR WARE INSTITUTE is dedicated to preserving the history of jazz as experienced by the master musicians who created and perpetuated the art form.
