For Immediate Release Harp and jazz? That seems incongruous until you hear the gorgeous sounds that come from Edmar Castaneda’s Blue Harp. It is, indeed, a Columbian harp which is based on the diatonic scale of seven rather than the chromatic twelve notes. Come to Orange Hall Theatre on Friday, October 14, 2016 for the 8pm performance of the Edmar Castaneda Quartet. Castaneda draws out lush colors and dynamic spirit, stretching his imagination to find other tones within the whole and half steps while cross-pollinating South American traditional music and its various Latin rhythms with jazz to produce an enchanting, captivating sound. The New York Times describes him as “almost a world unto himself.” Born in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, Castaneda possesses charisma that adds to his virtuosic playing. He crafts feats of cross-rhythms, layered with chordal nuances. In addition, his quartet is filled out with wonderful musicians, Henry Cole on drums, Andrea Tierra and her contralto voice and the fabulous trombonist Marshall Gilkes. A graduate of The Juilliard School and Interlochen Arts Academy, Gilkes instrument adds a enrapturing dimension to the quartet. Tickets are reasonably priced at $15 adults; $10 senior citizens, faculty, staff, and alumni; and free for all students. All tickets except student admission are available online at: www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ The box office opens at 7pm before the performance.
