in
JAZZ ACROSS THE AMERICAS: MEXICO
Curated by Antonio Sanchez with special guests the Villalobos
Brothers
November 7 - 8, 2014, 8 pm
With the roots of jazz originating in 19th century New Orleans from
interactions between African American, Caribbean and Mexican
musicians, Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra draw
particular attention to the compelling contributions made by Mexican
jazz artists.Jazz Across the Americas: Mexico is dedicated to the
memory of Mexican composer Eugenio Toussaint, and celebrated Mexican
drummer and composer Antonio Sanchez is the guest curator of the
Orchestra's program. Three-time GRAMMY® Award winner Antonio Sanchez
was born in Mexico City and arrived in New York City in the late '90s.
Sanchez has developed a successful career as both a composer and
in-demand drummer for the likes of Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Michael
Brecker, and many others.
Adding to the excitement of the program are the Villalobos Brothers
who have been acclaimed as one of today's leading Contemporary Mexican
ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully
blend and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the
intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music. The program also
includes "The Aztec Suite" written by Chico O'Farrill and "The Dia de
Los Muertos Suite" by Arturo O'Farrill. On November 7 & 8, the
Orchestra will premiere a new work, "Baby Jack" commissioned in honor
of O'Farrill' s animating vision of joy, justice and mutual respect.
Pre performance discussion on Friday, November 7 at 7pm.
