The
evening of September 24 was filled with the excitement of pianist
Dimitrije Vasiljevic’s modern jazz style. Vasiljevic and his quartet
dazzled a New York City audience at Drom in the East Village with a
night of highly original music from Vasiljevic’s debut album, “The Path of Silvan”,
comprised of eight original compositions. The quartet’s members were
Dimitrije Vasiljevic (Serbia) on piano, Brad Shepik (USA) on electrical
guitar, Ayal Tsubery (Israel) on upright bass and Alessio Romano (Italy)
on drums.
The performance began at 8:00 PM
and was streamed live over the internet via Gander.tv, delighting
Vasiljevic’s fans in his native Serbia and around the globe. Vasiljevic
interacted with his audience, providing touching stories about the
meaning of his compositions and the sources of his inspiration. From
the outset, the interpretation was energetic and upbeat, the
emotionally-charged music performed in a nuanced and balanced way by
this highly accomplished quartet who brought Vasiljevic’s compositions
to life through its internal chemistry and intricate improvisations.
Reaction
and feedback from the international, multi-cultural New York audience
was enthusiastic. The quartet’s dynamic performance in a club ambiance,
together with the evident appreciation of jazz enthusiasts and
connoisseurs made for a memorable evening and augured continuing success
for Dimitrije Vasiljevic on the New York jazz scene.
The
performance closed with a lively encore, “Dodge the Dodo”, written by
the late Esbjorn Svensson who greatly influenced Vasiljevic’s musical
expression. It was a fitting end to this wonderful night of European
jazz flavors interwoven with Balkan motifs.
After
the performance Dimitrije Vasiljevic wrote on his Facebook page to thank
the audience for making it so “memorable and beautiful”.
Vasiljevic can be heard again in a solo piano concert on October 11, 2013 at 8:00 pm at the Tenri Cultural Institute (43 W 13th St, New York, NY 10011) in New York City.
