Esa Pietilä - improvised solo saxophone concerts
The totally improvised solo saxophone concerts of Esa Pietilä (FIN) have appeared at many art galleries, festivals & churches internationally and belong to the elite of saxophone expression of today – his expression deals with influences from freejazz, avant garde and contemporary new music. When Esa plays, he blends his robust yet subtle textures and strong drama together with his “inner” musical dialogue thinking and strong urge to shape his free-form improvisational sceneries. His performances have been widely thanked by critics internationally.

A Solo saxophone work from arguable the finest saxophonist from eastern europe...Pietila clearly shows why his prolific talent has his work revered with the masters of their craft. "Karhea" is a landmark release for one of the finest saxophone player that I have had the exception to hear. E.g. the tune Lightnings Surprise” is a master class in the art of tenor sax. With the exception of Ivo Perelman, Esa Pietilä is now hitting his creative genius.

“Esa is one of Finland's leading jazz musicians. I recommend his albums which show his scope and imagination as a player.”
- Professor Stuart Nicholson, jazz journalist, author, lecturer, UK
Virtuosity and the powerful presence of his free-jazz oriented playing combined with multitude textures of avant garde sounds belong into the elite of saxophone expression of today. His capabilities to let the saxophone ring from variety of minimalism whispers to full free blowing results a rich palette of colourful shapes of multiphonics, chordal tones, rhythmic surprises, and even into a fuga-like approach. Esa´s "inner dialogue" and sense of form shapes the dramaturgy of a concert. His concerts are a strong musical fireworks of sound. The Concerts are totally improvised, which makes them interesting and unique performances. A concert lasts approx one hour.

“While never resorting to the tired bag of tricks that so few have been able to resist before him....and his tone is gorgeous." - Robert Spencer, CADENCE, USA
An always explorative saxophonist, accessible though with a personal perspective toward the music he plays. Esa is a jazz artist worth the search.”- Don Williamson, JAZZREVIEW.COM
