UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and Republic of Turkey are pleased to announce that the main event for the second annual International Jazz Day on April 30, 2013 will be hosted by Turkey in the city of Istanbul.
Celebrations in Istanbul will kick off with a special early morning performance for high school students conducted by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and others.The main concert on April 30, 2013 will be streamed live on the internet via this site, on Jazzday.com, UNESCO and State Department websites, and will be taped for future broadcast on public television stations around the world.
Among the performers announced for the International Jazz Day main concert include: Herbie Hancock, Terri Lyne Carrington, Abdullah Ibrahim, John McLaughlin, Marcus Miller, Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter, Robert Glasper, Eddie Palmieri; Al Jarreau, Lee Ritenour, Milton Nascimento, Christian Scott, and Hugh Masekela, and pianist John Beasley who will also serve as Musical Director.
