About this work: This recording is the outcome of a cooperation between Danish guitarist John Sund and the two South Indian musicians, Shashank Subramanyam (bansuri/bamboo flute) and Phalgun Parupalli (mridangam, kanjira/percussion). The result, which is best described as a musical meeting between cultures – although focused on Indian music, has become none the less that an atmospheric and intense presentation. The musicians long-life experience makes them at ease and allows them to freely interact, toying and juggling with the notes as they go along, almost without limit. We are hearing everything from very soft and meditative tones, to emotional solo-outbursts, to energetic rhythmic expression. For those who already are familiar with Indian music, you will get a different and fresh approach, and for those who may have found Indian music too foreign, the chance has arrived to give it another welcoming try.
Short biographies John Sund made his debut at the age of 18 together with the Danish Radio Big Band, led by trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg. He was the youngest musician to have been invited by The Music Academy, Chennai to perform the senior most slot of The Music Academy, (often performed by Legends of Indian Classical Music), at the age of 12 - a record yet to be broken in the history of South Indian Music. He has worked and recorded with such luminaries as Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan and John McLaughlin. He received a Grammy nomination in 2009 and has over 50 CDs and several DVDs to his credit.
