Parallax - Krutthuset (Pling Music 2012)

Since forming in 2008, the Norwegian trio Parallax has toured extensively in Norway, England, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany and China, and has previously released the album “Live In The UK” on the British label FMR. They are now releasing their second album “Krutthuset” on Pling Music.
When planning the recording of the album, they tried to find a place that would inspire them and somehow set a mark on the music. The choice fell on “Krutthuset” – an old powder depot in the middle of the forest north of Oslo. It serves as a workspace for artists Sverre and Vera Wyller, and with its wooden floors and stonewalls, the space offers great acoustics - and all reverb on the album was recorded live in the room. The only heating available was a wood-burning stove, and the crackling from the fire can be heard in the background on the album.

Parallax is one of those rare and lucky collaborations where there is a great sense of chemistry from the very beginning, and rather than adhering to any particular "school" of improvising, Parallax' music is a blend of the members' musical preferences and influences with strong emphasis on interplay and listening. They have forged their own unique take on improvising that seamlessly draws on an array of influences ranging from Asian folk musics to traditional jazz and abstract soundscapes. The strong focus on interplay gives the music a strong sense of form and direction, and the result is often conceived of as being composed.
The trio has extensive plans for 2012 and will be keeping a high level of activity including tours in Norway, Spain, Brazil and China.
