Accomplished jazz bassist/composer, bandleader, and author Chris Tarry presents his latest offering, The Rest of the Story as both a CD and a collection of short stories that also masquerade as the disc’s cover. Nicely done and very enjoyable, Chris! The four stories are brilliantly crafted, and completely enjoyable.
The music here is deep… very thoughtful, and well composed. However, as is the case with all of Chris’ writing – musical and otherwise – there is a nimbleness and playfulness that cannot be denied, particularly throughout the nine compositions that comprise the release. In particular, Chris’ keyboardist Henry Hey and guitarist Pete McCann share a musical telepathy that only comes through interpersonal relationship.
My personal favorite cut, which is also the title cut, paints with the most beautiful colors available in the medium of music. Beautiful. After my fourth listen through the CD I began to realize how well this music is written, presented, and discussed amongst the amazing players performing it. Words are meaningless here. Listen! Beware Chris’ breathtaking solo in “Battlestar”.
