Harry Allen - Rhythm On The River (Challenge Records 2011)

• Harry Allen (tenor saxophone)
• Warren Vaché (cornet)
• Rossano Sportiello (piano)
• Joel Forbes (bass)
• Chuck Riggs (drums)

"A new Harry Allen CD is always awaited with eager anticipation at Challenge and this, his third effort on our behalf, has us happy and excited because we think it's his best yet and that is saying something. With him we are very happy to have his stalwart team of 3 fine musicians, Rossano Sportiello (piano), Joel Forbes (bass) and Chuck Riggs (drums) and joining Them comes a real bonus in the shape of cornettist Warren Vaché – a man of great repute who manages to be both lyrical and forceful at the same time, who guests on 4 tracks. As was the case with Harry's previous 2 CD's for us, I came up with a basic theme and a list of possible songs for Harry's approval and also as before, Harry approved the idea and improved the list." Harry Allen seems to have struck up the perfect partnership with this label: they dream up a theme together and have fun assembling a collection of tunes to fit it. As a result we get one of the finest swing tenor saxophonists alive playing material that is fresh to both him and us. These 13 "river" numbers stretch from "Swanee River" to "Cry Me a River", with many revelations and rarities along the way. With the phenomenal Rossano Sportiello on piano and cornettist Warren Vaché guesting on four tracks, this set is a model of how to present mainstream jazz while also refreshing the repertoire.
