UK: Jazz review: Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festival
As multi-instrumentalist Fraser Fifield observed, "Isn't it great to have a jazz festival in a distillery, on a Hebridean island?" Or as Swedish pianist Jacob Karlzon put it, grinning hugely: "Screw the Lincoln Centre."
Karlzon's comment followed his account of debuting at that august Big Apple institution, amid its fabled Central Park setting – a backdrop which, he concluded, wasn't a patch on the view of sunlit sea, cirrus-streaked sky and verdant island scenery from Ionad Chalium Chille Ile, Islay's Gaelic cultural centre.
