jazz-rock fusion: Violinist Jamie Shadowlight's guitar homage
Pacific Beach violinist Jamie Shadowlight is no stranger to jazz and Latin music fans here. Her past concerts have found her saluting such disparate legends as Steve Wonder, Brazilian bossa-nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim and -- with San Diego dynamo Gilbert Castellanos -- reinventing "West Side Story" as a Latin-tinged "love story" for trumpet and violin.
Shadowlight's concert tonight at downtown’s all-ages Anthology should appeal to an even broader audience. Entitled “Electric Ladyland,” in honor of the landmark 1968 Jimi Hendrix album of the same name, the concert will feature improvisation-happy, jazz-rock fusion versions of classics by Hendrix ("Little Wing," "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Chile"), Led Zeppelin ("Immigrant Song," "Stairway to Heaven," "Black Dog" and more), Santana and Jeff Beck.
Shadowlight wlll perform on a 5-string NS WAV electric violin. She'll be using so many effects pedals -- including a wah-wah, a fuzz box, a delay unit, an octave divider and more -- that she has an official sponsor, Cass Street Music, for her pedals. Her band featues keyboardist Mikan Zlatkovich, electric bassist Cecil McBee Jr. and drummer Russell Bizzett (who rose to prominence backing rock guitar hero -- and onetime Deep Purple shredder -- Tommy Bolin).
They'll be joined by tabla player Rahis Khan for their re-invention of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," as well as by conguero Charlie Chavez for Santana's "I Love You Much Too Much."
