On her new album, Jacqui presents a selection of lush, atmospheric orchestral arrangements in collaboration with (and lovingly dedicated to) her father, the late Sir John Dankworth.
In addition to standards such as A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square and Blame It On My Youth, the album contains some wonderful original material in the form of the hauntingly beautiful title track (music by John Dankworth, lyrics by Buddy Kaye), and The Man, a father and daughter co-write.
Jacqui Dankworth and her father, John, had been planning an album together for years, but only managed to finish it close to the end of the latter's life, and this is it. Even if his name wasn't on the cover, there could be no doubt about whose arrangements these were. His style is inimitable, particularly his vocal accompaniments – always appropriate but never bland. One of the 12 songs is co-written by father and daughter, another composed by John, and the rest are classic ballads, of which Jacqui is the perfect exponent. A seriously good album in the classic mould, beautifully sung and written and superbly played.
