Jim Self, a veteran L. A. Studio Musician on over 1500 movie scores, has released his 13th solo CD (that was his tuba that projected those ve galactic tones as the Voice of Mothership in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”). His Innerplay CD was a Jazz Times top 50 in 2005, and the 2006 Downbeat Critics Poll recognized him as a “Rising Star”.

For this one he has brought together a “who’s who” of young West Coast Latin Jazz Musicians (most of whom are on the great Poncho Sanchez Band). Foremost is trombonist/composer/arranger Francisco Torres who produced and wrote much of the music.

The CD and song title came from a search for Jim’s last name in Spanish. To his amazement, Self is translated as Yo (ego). In Hollywood the word is a greeting or acknowledgement between studio musicians, as in “Yo cats”.

The tunes include originals by Jim and Francisco, and four Latin Jazz standards – a mix of Mambos, Cha Chas, an Afro 6/8, and a Bolero. Outstanding solos are by Ron Blake and Jim Self on Cal’s Pals, Rob Hardt and Andy Langham on Sweetest Blue, Francisco Torres on Quiero Llegar and For Charlie. Bassist Rene Camacho and percussionists Joey De Leon, Giancarlo Anderson and George Ortiz are the heartbeat of this wonderful band. And wait ‘til you hear the FLUBA! (Encognito and Morning)

In the back of my mind, I always wanted to play in an Afro-Cuban band, but that world is not a place where you would expect to see or hear a tuba. In the late 80s, I got to tour Japan with the Marty Paichm Dektette and Mel Torme, recording 2 CDs in the process. Afterward I created a seven-piece jazz group – the Tricky Lix Band. Carl Jefferson released our CD on the Concord label. This CD uses the same horns and an authenic Latin rhythm section.

Latin Jazz is upbeat, happy and full of love and life. All of the guys in the Tricky Lix Latin Jazz Band are great jazz soloists, and I am honored get to play with them. They made me an honorary Latino! ¡YO!

Recorded in the South of France and NYC, the 11 original songs on Velours propel the listener from the transcendent luminosity and opening invocation of Love Divine to the exuberant Get Funkay, from the unstoppable New York City Streets to the heart-stopping ballad, Light in My Life.  The mesmerizing funk groove of title song Velours literally flows into the American-songbook inspired Linger (with accompanying string quartet), while future R+B classic It's Got To Be You plays smooth counterpoint to the reggae-inspired Phased and the gospel blues of 30 Days. The deep groove of On & On flows like a river, and Love Will Keep Me Strong brings us back to the source.

Why the French spelling? “That’s a great question! My mother was born in Paris and I’ve been retracing her steps there. Velours actually began in France – we recorded six songs with my French band, then five songs in New York. The entire album was mixed in the French countryside by Jérôme Buigues, in a studio surrounded by Provençal vineyards. Plus the title song comes from French slang. So it made total sense to me to go with the French spelling.”

How do you pronounce Velours? Leave off the ‘s’ and say "veh-loooor". A French word with the same meaning in English: smooth, velvety, velour. Exactly how you'll feel after listening to Valerie Ghent.

Washington, D.C. Selected as Initial Markets

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) announced the 12 performing arts organizations and projects awarded grants through the foundation's Fund for National Projects. Jazz Forward Coalition's JazzHubs in America initiative was singled out in the Jazz category, as the sole awarded recipient, as an exemplary program to provide an infrastructure for a dynamic exchange of ideas, resources and demand building best practices that can be replicated around the country.

Jazz Forward Coalition (JFC) is a diverse and inclusive global alliance of jazz professionals devoted to advancing the genre and industry for sustainability and growth. JFC's JazzHubs in America will pilot a new jazz network by convening local organizations and professionals across all sectors to facilitate through collective action, professional development, shared resources and increasing demand in the market. Together, the rollout of these JazzHubs will form the basis for a robust and interactive national network of communities to strengthen jazz's cultural footprint and increase their local and national presence.

Peter Gordon, CEO of JFC, elaborates: "We see JazzHubs' function to coalesce the already tremendous resources of individual professionals and organizations in each market. JFC will provide a local to national framework to help orchestrate a future pathway for jazz through the empowerment of shared best practices, maximizing opportunities, and just plain working together."

Maurine Knighton, program director for the Arts at DDCF, said, "The field of jazz needs a forum and network as vibrant, forward-thinking and adaptable as the music itself. JazzHubs' goal to develop a light, nimble infrastructure that supports and responds to the community of jazz artists, presenters and other professionals is an exciting prospect. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is pleased to help advance this project and its benefits for the national sector."

The JFC JazzHubs are the first step in building an ongoing exchange, culminating in the establishment of a national jazz network of fully engaged and well-resourced JazzHub communities. Based on working relationships with JFC, this project is targeting the following respective organizations as partners based on their leadership and deep sense of community building: MCG Jazz (Pittsburgh, PA), The Nash (Phoenix, AZ), PDX Jazz (Portland, OR), and Smithsonian Jazz (Washington, D.C.).

These four organizations have committed to running a JazzHubs pilot program over the next 18 months by facilitating a series of gatherings focused on resource and capacity building, and information sharing. These interactive meetings, dubbed "summits," will address information on both a national and local level. On a national scale, JFC will present trends, practices, mechanisms, and assets for sustainability and forward progress. Locally, they'll discuss and vet issues to help define key priorities for collective action with a goal for greater marketplace coordination and growth.

USA, Florida: Jazz Legend Pee Wee Ellis at The Arts Garage

: October 1 at 8 PM: The Arts Garage presents the legendary tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis. Ellis is a well-known American musician who was an essential part of James Brown\'s band in 1960s and its musical director. A student of Sonny Rollins, he is a saxophonist, arranger and composer. Music, particularly jazz, is his passion. In 1965, he started working with James Brown and became a part of some hit projects like “Cold Sweat”, “Mother Popcorn”, “Lickin’ Stick,” and “The Chicken” in a short period of 4 years. Subsequently he worked with artists like George Benson, Hank Crawford, Esther Phillips, and David Liebman. He later worked with Van Morrison’s band as arranger and music director and fully deserves the credit for major hits of that time. His song with James Brown, \"Say It Loud: I\'m Black and I\'m Proud\", is a source of inspiration for all black people, and truly expresses their mind and heart. The song reflects his self-respect and truly reflects the political and social awakening that started during that time that led them to fight for their basic rights.
