GERMANY: Q4-UPHILL STRUGGLE STUDIO ALBUM (2019)

The saxophone quartet is a rarity in the world of jazz music. The World Saxophone Quartet, the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, the Rova Saxophone Quartet and the Kölner Saxofon Mafia are among the few notable exceptions.

The common theme connecting the bands mentioned above is that their music has a somewhat intellectual element to it and can often be said to have greater appeal to the brain than to the heart of the listener.

What a treat therefore, that with Q4 a Saxophone Quartet has burst on to the scene that touches the listener’s soul and intellect equally with its phenomenal music.

Founded nearly two years ago, four reed players combine their stupendous virtuosic skills, their artistic expertise honed over long years of playing and their powerful creativity to produce an idiosyncratic sound that can't be compared to any other group working on the circuit today.

When not writing and performing with Q4, baritone saxophonist Tini Thomson is the leader of her own highly successful quintet MaxSax. She has worked with illustrious musicians such as Dr. John, Incognito, Nils Landgren and German rap star Cro. Tini was also a member of the briefly revived famous saxophone Quartet Itchy Fingers. In 2015 she received the prestigious IB.SH-Jazzaward at the renowned Jazz Baltica Festival and one year later at the Deutschen...  more

FRANCE: Jekitiba – Jekitiba (2019)

Created by Rodrigo Viana and Matthieu Eskenazi, Jekitiba is a music group that brings melodic jazz themes sometimes melancholic, sometimes furious but always spiced by syncopated rhythms. Jekitiba presents an european jazz that would have traveled extensively and would have been enriched by the cultures it encountered. Most themes are based on brazilian and african rhythms, which gives a peculiar atmosphere to the interpretation of this jazz at the crossroads of world music. The compositions are performed in the studio and presented on stage by Rodrigo Viana on guitar, Mathieu Eskenazi on Bass, François Faure on Keyboards and Jean-François Ludovicus on drums.

USA: The Philippe Saisse Trio's hit-filled "The Body and Soul Sessions" gets remastered by Grammy winner Colin Leonard for release on vinyl, CD and digital on June 21

Back in “Sessions”

The Philippe Saisse Trio’s hit-filled “The Body and Soul Sessions” gets remastered by
Grammy winner Colin Leonard for release on vinyl, CD and digital on June 21.

LOS ANGELES (9 May 2019): An acoustic jazz trio and a multiple Grammy-winning mastering engineer who has plied his deft touch to records by Alessia Cara, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, Khalid and others totaling over 100 million in album sales may seem like strange bedfellows at first. But keyboardist Philippe Saisse has a history with Colin Leonard dating back a few years and now calls upon him to master all his recording projects. Leonard had been itching to get into a vinyl release after having recently acquired a lathe cutting machine that presses vinyl albums thus Saisse’s idea to revisit his trio’s 2006 release, “The Body and Soul Sessions,” instantly intrigued Leonard. The remastered album drops June 21 for the first time on vinyl and will also be available as a CD and in digital form on the Bandar-Log Music label.

An eclectic collection of a dozen pop, R&B and jazz covers, “The Body and Soul Sessions” spawned four singles, including No. 1 hits “Do It Again” and “September.” With Saisse’s spirited and nimble piano, Fender Rhodes and keyboards, David Finck’s bouncy and probing acoustic bass, and Scooter Warner’s crackling drum and percussion rhythms, Saisse describes the swinging, buoyant Goh Hotoda-produced set as “a fun, party record that was a really successful album.” Revamping the mix of contemporary and straight-ahead jazz for release on vinyl required editing and sacrifice.

“A vinyl album can only contain twenty minutes of music per side and the original album was fifty minutes long. We had to remove one song (“The Dolphin”) and edit each track to get the album down to forty minutes. As it turned out, the limitations of the technology actually made it a better, more concise album,” said Saisse, who first tapped Leonard to master his trio’s 2017 album, “On The Level.”

All twelve songs appearing on the original version will be on the CD and digital release of “The Body and Soul Sessions Remastered.” Later this month, the disc’s groovy, 1960s retro “Constant Rain” will be serviced to radio and online outlets for playlist adds.

Part of what inspired Saisse to reboot the album came from his desire to keep the good times going after working the past couple years with Grammy-winning guitar legend Nile Rodgers of Chic. Saisse wrote, produced and played keys on a song called “State of Mine” with Rodgers for the debut album by The Allen Carman Project, “Carmanology,” a project Saisse developed and produced with percussionist Gumbi Ortiz that was released last month. Rodgers liked the song so much that he included it on Chic’s 2018 album, “It’s About Time,” swapping out the original rhythm tracks for Chic’s rhythm section.

The French-born, Los Angeles-based Saisse was a Grammy nominee for his 2011’s contemporary jazz outing, “At World’s Edge.” His first recording date was 40 years ago with jazz fusion guitar giant Al Di Meola with whom he has continued to tour throughout the years. Saisse launched his solo recording career in 1988 with “Valerian.” The busy keyboardist-composer-producer has forged a unique and diverse career working with superstars David Bowie and The Rolling Stones, touring the globe in astute power trio PSP with Simon Phillips and Pino Palladino, and crafting tracks and albums for contemporary/smooth jazz royalty Dave Koz, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine, and BWB among many more. Known for his sweeping arrangements and cinematic compositions, Saisse pens music for film, video games, commercials and television such as “Madam Secretary” and the Jesse Owens biopic, “Race.”

“The Body and Soul Sessions Remastered” contains the following songs:

“Do It Again”
“September”
“Lady Madonna”
“Harley Davidson”
“Lovely Day”
“Fire and Rain”
“Constant Rain”
“The Dolphin”
“Comment Te Dire Adieu”
“Body and Soul”
“We’re All Alone”
“If I Ever Lose This Heaven”

There are plenty of reasons that the annual Highlights In Jazz concert series has been a favorite among in-the-know jazz fans for almost a half century. For starters, producer Jack Kleinsinger can be counted on to deliver concerts that are certain to surprise and delight savvy listeners. The final event of the 2019 season is no exception, as it showcases the compositional genius and enduring legacy of two of the most beloved figures in modern jazz, pianists Erroll Garner and Randy Weston.

A multi-generational lineup brings together established jazz masters with the best of today’s musical up-and-comers to fete these kings of the keyboard at the June 20 concert. On hand will be pianist Christian Sands, saxophonist TK Blue, trombonist Steve Turre, bassists Alex Blake and Luques Curtis, percussionist Neil Clarke, and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. And, as  has been the tradition since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, listeners will be treated to a surprise appearance by a renowned special guest.

The evening is dedicated to the memory of pianists Erroll Garner and Randy Weston. During his lifetime, Garner, who died in 1977, was among the world’s most celebrated jazz musicians, making regular TV appearances, and receiving numerous Grammy nominations. Not only did he write the beloved standard “Misty,” Garner also released an album that remains among the top-selling jazz recordings of all time: Concert by the Sea. The Garner mojo continues to this day. Pianist Geri Allen co-produced a three-CD release The Complete Concert by the Sea, which was nominated for a Best Historical Album Grammy.

NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston was a giant in more ways than one. A tireless champion of African Rhythms-based music, he traveled extensively throughout the continent on State Department tours and later ran a nightclub in Tunisia. He made a practice of seeking out the eldest member of the communities he visited, learning about the musical and cultural traditions and sharing them with audiences around the globe. A remarkable player, composer and raconteur, Weston maintained his curiosity and musical sense of adventure beyond his 92nd birthday, until his passing in September 2018. Renowned as a mentor, he was deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, while always looking joyfully to the future. Harvard University acquired Randy’s extensive personal archive in 2016.

The Erroll Garner Project includes:
As the creative ambassador to the Erroll Garner Jazz Project and co-producer of archival Garner recordings, pianist Christian Sands is immersed in the maestro’s music. Counting Geri Allen among his mentors, Sands has performed with Oscar Peterson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Wynton Marsalis, and Jason Moran, plus scores of others. He has released six albums as a leader and appears on dozens more by the likes of Gregory Porter, Bobby Sanabria, Christian McBride, Ben Williams and Reggie Quinerly, receiving multiple Grammy nominations along the way. Sands is also the musical director of the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour group.

Bassist Luques Curtis is in demand for his amazing skills in straight-ahead jazz as well as the Afro-Caribbean genre, as evidenced by his performances on more than 75 albums, and his numerous Grammy nominations. Luques’ experience includes stints with Eddie Palmieri, Christian Scott, Orrin Evans, Gary Burton, Andy Gonzalez and others. The bassist has also released four well-received Curtis Brothers recordings as co-leader with his sib, pianist Zaccai Curtis.

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.has made the Rising Star list in DownBeat’s Critics Poll for five straight years, thanks to his work with everyone from Christian McBride, Kurt Elling, Joey Alexander and others. With four albums under his own name, and another four as co-leader of the New Century Jazz Quintet, commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art and others, expect to be wowed by this gifted musician, composer, producer and educator for years to come.

The Randy Weston Alumni Band consists of:
Saxophonist TK Blue was a mainstay--and musical director--of Randy Weston’s African Rhythms ensemble for more than three decades. TK has well over a dozen releases as a leader, and scores of others with Weston, Sam Rivers, Abdullah Ibrahim, Benny Powell, Jayne Cortez and more. A celebrated composer, arranger and educator, TK has appeared with a pantheon of jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Chico Hamilton, Arturo O’Farrill, James Moody, Billy Harper, Paquito D’Rivera, Regina Carter, Jimmy Scott, Mal Waldron and countless others.

Once you’ve heard bassist Alex Blake, you’ll never mistake his sound for anyone else’s. His unique style combines strumming, slapping and singing. Often identified with Randy Weston, thanks to his long tenure with African Rhythms, Alex has also appeared with Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Carlos Santana, Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner, Yusef Lateef, Betty Carter, Jimmy Buffett, and a genre-spanning roster of musical masters.

In-demand percussionist Neil Clarke forms deep musical relationships that last for decades, including significant long-term collaborations with Randy Weston, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Dianne Reeves, Dave Sanborn, Paul Winter, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and others. A lifelong advocate of preserving and sharing African cultural traditions, Neil has worked as a consultant and educator, serving as artist in residence and conducting master classes at Harvard, Duke University, the Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and other renowned cultural institutions.

Award-winning trombonist Steve Turre made his mark with Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey, J.J. Johnson, Lester Bowie, Max Roach, Horace Silver, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, and other legendary band leaders, as well as fronting his own ensembles. A mainstay of the Saturday Night Live Band, Turre is also accomplished at making music on seashells. It will be especially exciting to hear Turre apply his magic touch to charts written by long-time Weston collaborator Melba Liston; a respected trombonist herself, notably with Dizzy Gillespie’s big band, Liston’s known for simpatico arrangements for brass, and the bass clef in particular.

Don’t miss the exciting wrap up to 2019’s Highlights In Jazz season, featuring a surprise special guest!

USA: NEW RELEASE: Richie Beirach - Gregor Huebner Duo The WDR Big Band "Crossing Borders" (Zoho Music)

Any musician worth his or her salt knows that timing is integral to making music. From counting notes in a measure, to orchestrating in different meters, the element of time is foundational to every piece of music. For most artists, being sure that a song has proper timing is mostly a musical decision. But in the case of Crossing Borders, maestros Richie Beirach, piano, Gregor Huebner, violin, and Rich De Rosa (conductor) have thought about timing in a broader sense. Their spectacular and sparkling album with Germany’s WDR Big Band is both timely and timeless.

In the US and Western Europe, the rise of tribal politics and a trenchant xenophobia has taken hold. Building the US-Mexico border wall has become a political issue, not just dividing countries, but Americans who support or disagree with this measure. The resulting heightened concern and anxiety towards people who are different continues to shape the national political dialogue.

This is a conversation in which artists can and should participate. Musical creators learn from an early age that they should evaluate people on their intrinsic talents and skills. And that music ultimately has a welcoming spirit, in which artists and audience members can be in communion with each other during and throughout a performance or production.

Crossing Borders is a production with this sort of welcoming spirit. It blends borders between classical and jazz, traditional and edgy. Both Richie Beirach and Gregor Huebner were classically trained and play instruments that are often used to perform music by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. “I wanted to do something unusual,” said Huebner. So, when he was commissioned by the WDR, he jumped at the opportunity to create something of the moment, and very much needed.

The first piece Rectilinear/Paradox is a medley of two Beirach compositions. It’s a rather short number but makes a profound statement. It’s the opening salvo of what’s to come, an album that knows no borders or limits. The juxtaposition of these two pieces showcases how different sounding elements may mesh together. The more melodic “Paradox” with its song-like form, paired with the contrapuntal material of “Rectilinear” makes for tantalizing beginning.

The centerpieces of this production are two concertos for solo instruments and jazz orchestra composed by Huebner. Given that solo concertos are usually within the classical music genre, and performed with an orchestra, this album’s title “Crossing Borders” thus derives its second meaning by describing these two concertos’ musical category-transcending character into big band jazz.

“To write for a big band in this way is something new and fresh,” he says. Violin Concerto No. 3 is comprised of three movements. The first is Kathmandu and it is based on the devastating earthquake which occurred in Nepal in April 2015, around the time that Huebner began thinking about this project. It begins with a slow introduction followed by a scream or outburst with a heavy rhythmic structure. As the second movement The Grave begins, a more serene aesthetic envelopes the listener, as the number is based on one note that varies in terms of volume and density, as performed by Huebner. This represents the settling down or aftermath of the earthquake. Finally, the third movement is entitled Two Thousand 15 and presents a more uplifting and positive outlook on the future, the rising from the ashes.
Snow Leopard is a masterful arrangement, inspired by the original 1978 ECM LP “Eon” of the Richie Beirach Trio with George Mraz and Jack DeJohnette, which have moments of silence and space. It’s in this “emptiness” that DeJohnette responds gracefully. “That’s where I got the idea,” says DeRosa, “to transcribe Richie’s improvisation from the 1978 recording, and then ask him to respond to his solos from years ago.” The WDR horn players followed suit by performing Richie’s transcribed piano improvisation. That a classic recording could be recast in this way is a commentary on how sometimes the best ideas come from looking at from where we’ve come.

Huebner composed the Piano Concerto No. 3 for his friend Beirach, who he has collaborated with for some twenty-three years. It is entitled “The Code” since that’s Beirach’s nickname as he knows “the code” of playing music at a high level. Indeed, this concerto also has three movements, beginning with Into the Quest. Beirach and Liebman had a band “Quest” which began in the 1980s and this piece evokes the energy from this band.

There is a terrific solo transition into the second movement It’s Enough. It is based on a 17th century German Lutheran hymn which has a deep history in German classical music: Bach arranged it as a chorale in his Church Cantata BWV 60, and Austrian composer Alban Berg employed it to great effect in his Violin Concerto of 1935. “This is Richie’s forte, to take another composition and make it his own,” said Huebner. The last movement Born in Brooklyn is a coming home of sorts. Beirach was born in this borough and grew up in this environment rich with creative energy.
Elm was written by Beirach on Christmas Day 1979 when he found out that his peer, Polish jazz violinist Zbigniew “Zbiggy” Seifert, a violinist of great import, had passed away. “This piece became my best-known composition,” says Beirach. The direct emotional appeal of the melody and simplicity of the harmony and structure certainly strikes a chord within the heart. It opens with a chorale set in dark brass followed by a moment of solitude, in which there’s a written cadenza for bassist John Goldsby. The duet between violin and guitar evokes a somber, solemn moment, as Beirach performs a stirring solo.

Pendulum, another Beirach composition from the 1978 ECM “Eon” LP, may sound like a simple and short piece. This modal number is anything but. It incorporates a chromatic pedal-point that builds intensity, over which the melody unfolds. The piece culminates with a stomping groove that grows in volume and instrumentation. It’s certainly a dazzling number, showcasing both brilliant arrangement and performance.

It has been a privilege and high honor to produce this production with and for these musical giants. Creating music that speaks to the time in which we live is a charge that I hope more artists will be inspired to take on.

When describing vocalist and arranger Paul Jost, two words come to mind … “passionate” and “storyteller”. To Paul, each lyric offers a story, a message, and a vehicle to convey his own interpretation and message. While Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger, it’s his vocal style that makes him standout. With his reputation as a vocalist growing, Paul has been filling rooms on the New York club scene as well as captivating audiences on festival stages both in the US and Europe.

“Simple Life” is Jost's follow-up to his successful debut release “Breaking Through” and features his quartet with Jim Ridl-piano, Dean Johnson-bass and Tim Horner on drums. The album also features Joe Locke as special guest on a number of tracks. Paul said, “I was blessed to experience the joy of having these extraordinary musicians and dear friends share both their boundless talent and love in realizing this album".

Paul went on to say that the album title, “Simple life”, is not just a tune on the album but a thread that is woven throughout. He recalls his father saying, “This whole thing (life) is about common sense. Sometimes the hardest thing about living is just to live – don’t always complicate things. Sometimes you just have to let life come to you”.

The songs included on “Simple Life” not only look back, paying tribute to the tradition, they also look forward reaching outside the traditional boundaries of the genre. However, this album is even more as it documents a part of Paul's philosophy and vision. On the album Paul takes his hand to a number of standards from the jazz repertoire bringing a fresh approach while at the same time respecting their history and place in the American Songbook. He weaves his way artfully through the verse of “Give Me the Simple Life”,brings his rhythmic skills to Ellington's “Caravan”and provides us with a heartfelt rendition of “Folks Who Live on the Hill”.

Not one to be limited by genre, Paul also takes two Lennon and McCartney classics "Blackbird"and "With a Little Help from My Friends"to task. “Blackbird” is given an up-tempo swing treatment and forms a perfect opener for the album while "With a Little Help from My Friends" is given a soulful twist with some vocal help from his friends. Paul’s instrumental approach is shown on Sonny Rollins "No Moe"as he scats his way through this bop tune based on rhythm changes. Contrasting this is Paul’s rendition of the traditional folk song "Shenandoah"that shows him doing what he does best, telling a story.

One of Paul's signature songs at his live gigs is the Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg song "If I Only Had A Brain"from the film "The Wizard of Oz". This lilting ballad showcases Paul’s lyrical sensibilities and, once again, his art of storytelling.

One track that truly grabs your attention is "Everybody's Talkin'"by Fred Neil. The song, best known from the classic film "Midnight Cowboy", becomes a canvas for Paul to paint a picture of a subject close to his heart. Paul’s inspiration came from the news a number of years back of Mark Murphy's misdiagnosis with Alzheimer’s Disease and the lasting impact this had on him. Paul’s rendition takes a look at the anguish one can only imagine when first realizing they’re losing themselves to this terrible disease.
Bob Dylan fans will enjoy his version of “Girl from the North Country”. With every listening the layers of the onion are pealed back each time displaying a deeper level of understanding of the pathos contained in Dylan's lyrics.

Paul adds two original compositions to the mix with the waltz "Bela Tristeza"and rounding out the album the poignant commentary on the current state of the world "Livin' in the Wrong Time". A perfect track to close on, leaving the listener with food for thought.

With “Simple Life”, Paul has created an album that not only documents this current period in his career but also sets the tone for all that will come. It's clear when listening to this album that Paul Jost has staked his claim as one of the most innovative vocalists on the scene today.
