Rolf Sturm’s guitar playing has earned the praise of Joe Pass, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, and Bill Frisell. Rolf has performed and/or recorded with Tony Trischka, Loudon Wainwright, Dave Douglas, Billy Martin, David Johansen, Eddy Arnold, Bob Mintzer, Maggie Roche, Jorma Kaukonen, and members of the Grateful Dead. He also co-leads the NYC trio Tricycle and is a member of the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble.

Rolf has toured North America and Europe, performing at the World EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany. He has performed at Lincoln Center and Town Hall in NYC, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and at dozens of festivals including the JVC Jazz Festival, the Boston Folk Festival, the Syracuse Jazz Festival, Ripplefest, Music On The Mountain Festival, and the Toronto Jazz Festival. He has performed on soundtracks for both film and television and has had his music featured on NPR’s “All Songs Considered”. USA: Jonathan Finlayson and Sicilian Defense , Jonathan Finlayson- Moving Still (2016)

Moving Still is the eagerly-awaited follow-up to trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson's Moment and the Message, which was voted the Number One album by a debut artist in the NPR Jazz Critics Poll and called 'a great modern jazz record that also sounds like joy and feels like a dance' by PopMatters. One of the most highly regarded young musicians on the scene, Finlayson was recently been named the Number One Rising Star Trumpeter in the Downbeat Critics Poll. He has been a member of alto saxophonist Steve Coleman's Five Elements for over 15 years, and plays regularly with the likes of such cutting-edge jazz artists as Steve Lehman, Mary Halvorson, Muhal Richard Abrams and Henry Threadgill. USA: Leon Redbone- Long Way From Home (2016)

 

Third Man Records is proud to announce the forthcoming releases of Leon Redbone’s Long Way From Home, the never-before-released earliest known recordings of the mysterious performer. Redbone’s career has spanned over four decades and began with his earliest performances on the folk festival and club circuit. His numerous appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Saturday Night Live and other outlets catalyzed his rise to international recognition. Over the ensuing years he has appeared throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Japan and released thirteen albums of his unique music, a panoply of early music styles that he delivered with his singular laconic idiosyncratic style. A true champion of early American ragtime, blues and jazz, Leon Redbone has spent a lifetime preserving that musical tradition while exposing successive generations to a rich musical heritage of which they might not otherwise have become aware. Recorded in 1972 by Dave Benders for WBFO Radio at the University of Buffalo and features some of the rst Leon Redbone recordings. Long Way From Home was never released commercially and will nally be available in CD, LP and digital formats for all to enjoy.

BRASIL: Andrea Marquee- Zumbi (Stern's Brasil 2016)

 

This debut disk from Andrea Marquee is a kinetic mix of funk, club sounds, sampling, psychedelica and electronica, all with some very excellent singing and songwriting. Marquee wrote many of the tracks on Zumbi, which includes a number of classics from legends Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben. There are guest appearances by Otto, one of the leading voices of the new generation of Brazilians who are melding traditional Brazilian rhythms and instruments with the experimentation of electronica. Rica Amabis produced many of the tracks and plays "beats" as well. Marcos Suzano, Brazil's premier pandeiro player also shows up. -Michael Cowan -- From Rhythm Magazine

USA: Roberto Fonseca- ABUC (IMPULSE 2016)

 

ABUC is the 8th album by Roberto Fonseca hes released under his own name and the first to appear on the Impulse! label. Teeming with rascally rhythms and burly brass and woven from allusions, souvenirs and contrasts, ABUC is a kaleidoscope of dancing colors with which Roberto tells a story: the great and rich story of Cuban music, from yesterday to today.

Ranging from contradanza and mambo to cha-cha-cha, danzon and bolero, and infused with the spirit of the descarga jam and hip-hop, Roberto narrates this story in his own manner; his tale swarms with subtly veiled references to the past, and he enumerates them in contemporary detours that are intriguing. En route, he prances over the keys of a Hammond organ, the sound of yesterday cutting across the sound of today (a touch of electro), and breaks free from the chronological thread to mingle different periods as the albums titles come and go or, at times, even inside one and the same piece.

You probably noticed that ABUC is a palindrome. It's CUBA written backwards.

The album opens and closes with the same theme, orchestrated as an overture and then transformed into a simple piano piece as the epilogue: Cubano Chant, a composition by American jazz pianist Ray Bryant (1931-2011). He dedicated this very beautiful tune to Cuban song. So I wanted to express my gratitude to him by beginning the album with that tune. American jazz, but re-created with the soul of the guaracha, says Roberto. The union between jazz and our music in Cuba is very significant with regard to the history of music in general. In inviting trombone player Trombone Shorty to play on this title, he wanted, he says, to show everything that binds Cuba to New Orleans.

Among many other remarkable guests who add their personal colors to this beautiful journey, besides vocalists Dayme Arocena and Carlos Calunga you can also take pleasure in hearing singers Rafael Lay and Roberto Espinosa Rodríguez from the Orquesta Aragon, trumpeter Manuel Guajiro Mirabal, and the famous guajiro singer from the province of Santiago de Cuba, Eliades Ochoa. Three singers are my heroes, apart from my mother, says Roberto, Omara Portuondo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa, who I was fortunate to work with on the title Tumbao de la Unidad.

This guajira astutely mingles electro effects and electric guitar with the instruments of Brazilian percussionist Ze Luis Nascimento surrounding the voice and guitar of Eliades. He sings an appeal for love, a call for peace in the world, and unity. A dream? Dreams are goals for which you have to fight a battle that never ends.
