ESTONIA: Maigroup-You (2015)

Maigroup | You

Second studio album consisting of 10 original compositions by the bassist and the band leader Mai Agan. Her music is very confessional and fragile under the surface of strong melodies, beautifully crooked harmonies and hip grooves.
Mai Agan (born 1988) is an Estonian electric bass player, composer and arranger. Her tireless work ethic, astonishing creativity, open-mindness as a musician and versatility has raised her name among Scandinavian top musicians. Agan is hailed as a stylistic chameleon, moving effortlessly from pop and funk to jazz and blues. Agan is mostly known for her work with Estonian pop sensation KERLI, Swedish singer-songwriter Linnea Henriksson and her own jazz-fusion group MaiGroup that she formed in 2010 from the most remarkable Swedish young musicians. Agan has also collaborated with HĂĄkan Broström, Carola Häggkvist; Philip Hamilton (Mike Stern “Voices”, Pat Metheny Group), Anders Widmark, Tiit Paulus, Lembit Saarsalu, Tönis Mägi, Ain Agan, Riho Sibul, Jaak Johanson, Toomas Rull, Teele Viira, Doug Seegers, Anders Johansson, Magnus Lindgren, Stockholm Strings, Norrbotten Big Band etc. In 2012 she joined “Estonian bass maffia” Aces of Basses. In November 2013 she was recording in Turin, Italy, with Alessia Mattalia (Mattalia appears on Jeff Beck’s album “Emotion & Commotion” 2010). Back from Italy Agan joined Swedish popstar Linnea Henriksson’s band and toured extensively in Scandinavia 2014 and beginning of 2015. Back from touring, she is again focusing on her own music, but remains very much in-demand. In June 2015 she joined one of the most accomplished big bands in Sweden - New Places Orchestra, led by Swedish saxophone legend, composer & arranger HĂĄkan Broström. Discovering musical kindred spirits in each other - Mai and HĂĄkan formed a new jazz-fusion group Agan/Broström Spirit together and their debut concert at Stockholm Jazz Festival 2015 was ranked as no 1 highlight by Svenska Dagbladet and it was recorded by the Swedish Radio.

Mai was born and raised in Kuressaare, on an island Saaremaa, Estonia. She played the violin for 8 years and first touched the bass at the age of 16. It was a moment of recognition. Estonian “Jazz King” Tiit Paulus became her new teacher in 2004 and they played together in a band 2+2=5. Agan started playing with the great masters in an early age since Tiit Paulus often invited his friends to play with 2+2=5 (Ain Agan, Lembit Saarsalu, Jaak Sooäär etc). 2007-2010 she continued her studies in Georg Ots Tallinn Music School where Raul Vaigla became her teacher. He had been Mai’s favorite musician for years (he still is!) so these years with Mr. Vaigla were extremely inspiring. He has stayed by her side as a good friend and a supporter. 2010-2011 she studied at Skurups Folkhögskola, 2011-2014 The Royal College of Music in Stockholm and right now is continuing her studies at the master program, under the supervision of local bass gurus Jan Adefelt, Micke Berglund and finally Palle Danielsson, perhaps most notable for his work done with Keith Jarrett from 1974-1979, becoming a member of his European quartet for that period.

In April 2010 Mai Agan won the best instrumentalist prize on Uno Naissoo Compostions Contest.

NEW VOICES FROM BRAZIL

Singer/guitarist Renato Braz has roots in all three of Brazil’s cultures: Indian, African, and European. His parents are Guarani Indians from Mato Grosso; his mother remarried a “Baiano” from the Northeast of Brazil; and he has lived for many years in Sao Paulo. He and Paul Winter met in 2004 and they have worked since then on the production of Renato’s first album for the US.

This new album, Saudade, available in early December, includes 14 of the most beautiful songs that have
been born in Brazil. Renato will be premiering songs from the Saudadealbum in the Winter Solstice Celebration.

Sao Paulo journalist Luis Nassif regards Renato as “the JoĂŁo Gilberto of the 21st Century."

Renowned singer/songwriter Dori Caymmi says: “Renato Braz is

Brazil's greatest singer.”

Fabiana Cozza is considered by critics and audiences to be one of the most important interpreters of contemporary Brazilian music She was nominated for “Best Samba Singer” award by Brazilian Music Awards. She will be making her New York debut in the upcoming Winter Solstice Celebration.
SAMBA AND SAUDADE IN THE CATHEDRAL

New York’s St. John the Divine is an utterly unique performance venue. It seems appropriate that this largest cathedral in the world also be the most welcoming and open-minded. This is an Episcopalian cathedral, not Catholic. It’s a home for the human spirit, meant to uplift, inspire, awe, unite, and give refuge. It’s the perfect location for the Paul Winter Consort’s ongoing exploration of the turning of the seasons and the tuning of the soul.

Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Celebration is not at all a religious or "church" event. It is a completely secular. The Cathedral has embraced this event, throughout these past 35 years, as simply a celebration of the life-spirit.

Since Paul Winter presented his first Winter Solstice Celebration in 1980, the event has become a forum for world music, featuring guest performers from many cultures, including Russia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Spain, Armenia, Mali, Tibet, Puerto Rico, and Brazil.

(The Consort has also presented in February a “Carnival for the Rainforest”.) The Winter Solstice Celebration inhabits the entirety of this titanic space – two blocks long inside and tall enough to house the Statue of Liberty – taking advantage of its mystery and beauty to create a forest, or a deep night sky, where a giant earth globe spins from the vault like a tiny planet in the cosmic vastness, or the world’s largest tam-tam rises, spotlit, 12 stories high.

At the symbolic moment of the solstice, a huge, "sun-gong" (the world's largest), rises, with its player, one hundred feet in the east end of the Cathedral.

“This isn’t just some church,” explains Winter. "The space is transformative. The power and its beauty of its geometry have a monumental impact. Of all the places I’ve played in America, only two could host this event: the Cathedral and the Grand Canyon,” Winter says.

Winter is one of many artists and thinkers who have found a sanctuary under the stone arches of St John the Divine’s breathtaking interior. The largest cathedral in the world, known as “the Green Cathedral,” it is also an ark and incubator for art. In the 1980s and 1990s, it became the center of a vital community of thinkers and seekers working on issues of ecology and environment and world peace. It represented a global forum, where you could listen to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Buckminster Fuller, the Mayor of Jerusalem, the Dalai Lama, Cesar Chavez, Carl Sagan, Rene Dubos, Jesse Jackson, Vaclav Havel, Secretaries General of the United Nations, Nelson Mandela, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The Consort includes: Paul Winter on soprano saxophone, cellist Eugene Friesen, double-reed player Paul McCandless, keyboardist Paul Sullivan, guitarist Paul Meyers, bassist Eliot Wadopian, drummer Jamey Haddad, Brazilian percussionist Cafe, organist Tim Brumfield, and Sun-gong maestro Scott Sloan.

GERMANY: Ruby-Pilz-Weber & Brochier-Rimbaud #4 (JAZZHAUSMUSIK 2015)

Rimbaud #4, Georg Ruby

Michel Pilz - bcl
Georg Ruby - p
Daniel "D-Flat" Weber - dr,perc
Elodie Brochier - voice

Following the successful CD release "Deuxieme Bureau" of Georg Ruby and Michel Pilz - it has been awarded as album of the year by the "New York City Jazz Record" - "Rimbaud #4" refers - not in total but centrally - to four poems of the great French writer, read by the wonderful, in Sarreguemines living actess and singer Elodie Brochier. The band improvises in different settings while she performs the poems thus concentrating musical and literary energy. In addition to that the trio integrates Elodie Brochier in some recordings as improvising vocalist without lyrics into the completely free improvised music, thereby creating further exciting tracks of improvisation.

Terese Genecco (Teh-REECE Jeh-NECK-oh) & Her Little Big Band performed 100 shows at The Iridium between 2009 and the present becoming known as “the longest-running nightclub act on Broadway” and winning multiple awards and international accolades for their efforts.
