The 2011 Angel City Jazz Festival takes place September 22 – October 2. This year's theme is Global Jam, with artists representing nine countries at seven events throughout Los Angeles. Venues include LACMA, REDCAT, The Ford Amphitheatre, Zipper Hall, The Echoplex, and The Blue Whale.

The Jahazi Festival is committed to education and actively working towards peace. These themes, and many others, will be discussed in workshops and forums designed to stimulate discussion. LISTENING to jazz and classical music that is punctuated with drum and dance rhythms in a plush garden on a Saturday afternoon makes for a refreshing experience.
Tomorrow afternoon Raintree Gardens in Umwinsdale will present such a unique experience when South Africa's Soweto String Quartet teams up with local acts of Dudu Manhenga, Jazz Invitation, Drum Café and Essence of Women in a family concert.
With their violins, viola and cello Soweto String Quartet always serenade audiences with classical tunes that exude legendary expertise.
Manhenga is known for her soothing jazz tunes that have endeared her with music lovers in the country and abroad.
Fresh from a tour of Italy, Manhenga is likely to be rejuvenated to lead her Color Blue through a spirited performance.
Also presenting a jazz act will be Jazz Invitation, a group that boasts wealthy vocal and instrument experience. Jazz Invitation has a reputation of sending audiences to dance with sober-but-danceable tunes. They spice their original compositions with copyrights from various local and international music greats.
The event will have a traditional African feel courtesy of Drum Café Zimbabwe, an ensemble of drummers that will present various rhythms and showcase their skills with drums from different parts of Africa.
The Drum Cafe concept is a unique hands-on application of African drums and percussion that not only entertains but energises the audience. It was launched in Zimbabwe recently.
It will also be an afternoon of dance as an assemblage of female dancers known as Essence of Women will also take to the stage. Their thrilling fusion of traditional and contemporary dances has left people asking for more at various occasions.
The dance troupe has a mission to promote and encourage dance amongst women of all cultures here in Zimbabwe, and to provide a platform for young choreographers to showcase their work.
Through the leadership of Soukaina Edom they aim to express the universal spirit of womanhood.
Raintree Gardens' executive director Tenjiwe Mutiti said the show would be a great opportunity for families to socialise and have fun in an exciting environment.
"The gardens present a refreshing environment and the music will complement such a setting, giving audience a refreshing afternoon," she said.

BELGIAN JAZZ MEETING 2011! SEPTEMBER 2-4, DE WERF, BRUGGE
a showcase festival and network meeting to discover the richness of the contemporary Belgian jazz scene.
It takes place in arts centre De Werf in Bruges.
A jury of some 60 jazz experts has chosen 12 bands,
which we would like to present to you through a number of short concerts.
The purpose of the jazz meeting is mainly to help build the international name and reputation of the Belgian jazz scene. Getting to know you and your organisation during this meeting will, hopefully, also improve collaboration and exchange in the European jazz scene.
The Belgian Jazz Meeting is an initiative of Jazz Brugge, De Werf, Flanders Music Centre and JazzLab Series; Wallonie-Bruxelles Musiques and JazzTogether.
Among the most talented and resourceful figures in the exciting Miami Latin Jazz scene, Venezuelan pianist Silvano Monasterios leads the way as a top-rated figure. Both as performer and composer he is among the most gifted today and his piano playing and compositions have appeared on recordings by a number of important of artists including Ira Sullivan, Othello Molineaux, Dave Liebman, Donald Byrd, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Exhibiting an insatiable appetite for challenge and change, Silvano has brought his new quintet into the Savant studios and recorded eight new and imaginative compositions. While this latest work is likely destined to be classified as "Latin Jazz" with its assortment of indigenous percussion instruments and rhythms, it is totally devoid of the Latin clichés often encountered in pseudo-Latin jazz. Instead, it showcases an artist with a complete understanding of his complex Venezuelan roots, who is aware of the Austro-Germanic-European compositional heritage and who, at the same time, is steeped in the great American jazz tradition.

THAI jazz singer and songwriter Natasha Patamapongs is a regional powerhouse in her musical genre. Last year, AllAboutJazz.com writer Ian Patterson called her “an undeniably talented singer, brimming with confidence and a bubbly personality”.
VirtualMalaysia.com added: “Her sweet and clear voice brings the jazzy numbers to a new level. She has such depth, substance and panache that it’s hard to believe that she is only 25.”
Natasha is best known as the lead singer of Thailand-based jazz band Mellow Motif. As one of the founding members and main driving force behind the band’s success, she is responsible for the band’s arrangement ideas, production, artistic direction and public relations work.
She is one of the few jazz personalities to represent Thailand on the global stage today, including at Hua-Hin International Jazz Festival (2009), Singapore’s CHIJazz Festival (2009), Singapore’s KinestAsia by Timbre (2010), Malaysia’s Miri International Jazz Festival (2010), Indonesia’s Asean Jazz Festival (2010-2011), and this year at China’s Nanjing International Jazz And World Music Festival.
Performing highly inspired arrangements of jazz standards, Brazilian music and original compositions, she captured the hearts of non-jazz listeners and jazz aficionados in and out of the country.
In 2009, the Thai media described her as one of Bangkok’s Top 20 People To Watch and she was hailed as Thailand’s most “phenomenal musician” in the making.
As a solo artiste, Natasha enjoys collaborating with top jazz musicians across the region. They include Denny Euprasert, Michael Veerapen, Lewis Pragasam, Saxman Koh, Haruya Kibata, Valtinho Anastacio, Bob James and Roberto Menescal.
