FINLAND: Harri Kuusijärvi Koutus-Music for a Family Picnic(2017)

Harri Kuusijärvi Koutus | Music for a Family Picnic
”Harri Kuusijärvi Koutus totally renews ones image of accordion music. ★★★★★ 5/5 stars”
Juha Seitz / Soundi 2014

”Unexpected, curious, striking, offbeat, rockin’, avant-garde, and fucking good. – – Koutus is one of the best discs to emerge this year, regardless of category.”
Mark S. Tucker / FAME 2014

”I have to say that I don’t think I’ve ever been completely astonished at the first listen to a CD as when I slipped in Harri Kuusijarvi Koutus’s debut – – Koutus is startling, stunning and ferocious.”
TJ Nelson / World Music Central 2014

Harri Kuusijärvi Koutus is a Finnish band led by accordionist Harri Kuusijärvi. Drawing on various contemporary influences the group creates a distinctive soundscape with taste of 70´s prog rock, jazz and world music fueled with improvisation – avant-fusion- accordion-jazz, as it has been described. Kuusijärvi’s compositions present accordion in a totally new light, accompanied with electric guitar, vibraphone, bass and percussion. The group’s debut album Koutus was internationally acclaimed by jazz, rock and world music critics. On their second album Music For A Family Picnic, released by Eclipse Music in February 2017, the band digs deeper into the northern state of mind:

”Music For A Family Picnic became a working title for our new material after someone describing our music mentioned that anyway he wouldn’t play it at his next family picnic. The twists of human life, the stories and relations of people and the oddities of humankind were a big inspiration for this music. The name suited the album, which in a way is a soundtrack for all this: program music for the picnic of humankind.” -Harri Kuusijärvi

Harri Kuusijärvi Koutus consists of five musicians each actively working in the Finnish jazz, rock and world music scene. Harri Kuusijärvi (Sampo Lassila Narinkka, Tero Hyväluoma Frost V, Tango á la Yona, Zazambor) is a Helsinki-based accordionist, originally from Lapland. He has explored the possibilities of accordion with an exceptionally wide angle ranging from contemporary solo repertoire to different forms of jazz, world and improvised music. In the album he is joined by Veikki Virkajärvi (Njet Njet 9, Aapo Heinonen Quintet), Eero Tikkanen (Mopo, The Mystic Revelation of Teppo Repo, Mikko Innanen 10+), Teho Majamäki (Teho Majamäki Travelogue, Ismo Alanko Teholla) and Jesse Ojajärvi (Tero Hyväluoma Frost V, Ville Vokkolainen & Kusipäät).

GERMANY:Tobias Frohnhöfer- Informal (2017)

Tobias Frohnhöfer | Informal
RMI Records is happy to announce the release of Informal by the Tobias Frohnhöfer Adventure. The young German drummer, composer, and bandleader is heard here on an authoritative collection of original instrumental compositions with his quartet of American jazz musicians.

Originally from Ludwigshafen, Germany, Tobias Frohnhöfer began playing drums at age 7 and quickly developed his chops playing jazz and other styles. A recent graduate of the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, he has already toured throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, while appearing on over ten albums as a drummer and vibraphonist. His successes in music school earned him the Baden-Württemberg-Exchange scholarship, granting him the opportunity to come to the U.S. for a year, where he enrolled at Wesleyan University, studying jazz with Pheeroan ak Laff and Jay Hoggard and South Indian percussion with David Nelson, as well as spending time in New York. Informal was recorded at the culmination of that year and demonstrates the honing his voice as a player, composer, and bandleader. His drum sound displays his myriad influences, from Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Billy Hart, and his mentor Christian Scheuber to younger players like Johnathan Blake, Bill Stewart, and Eric Harland, but his conception has moved from derivative to distinctive.

The musical history of solo piano recordings is long and rich, and contains much emotionally compelling music. Entire albums of solo piano require real skills from the improvising artist to keep the listeners’ ears glued to the music. The demonstration is here. Bill O’Connell is woefully under-recorded as a solo artist, given that he has been the rst-call pianist for names like Mongo Santamaria, Sonny Rollins, Gato Barbieri and Jerry González’s Fort Apache Band, to name but a few. On this CD, recorded in a beautiful-sounding concert venue in Rockland County, NY he plays his own compositions with some covers of the standards “The Song is You”, “It Could Happen to You” and “Afro Blue”. O’Connell’s playing is very satisfying, not ostentatious or prone to dramatic e ects, but is focused on careful development and further expansion of initial ideas. Imaginative in spirit, his improvisations are quite controlled, never wild, never cloyingly sweet, yet very lyrical and impressionistic. A rare and winning combination.

“Bill O’Connell continues to be in the springtime of his career and his last few recordings are wonderful testaments to a gift for composition and performance...Latin Jazz is richer for his contributions as he continues to add volumes to the literature of the earthy dialect.”
—Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

USA:Ted Brancato- Bicoastal(2017)

Ted Brancato | Bicoastal
Dear Listener – First of all, thank you for listening! You have helped me complete the creative cycle that began in the winter of 2015-16 when my wife, Faith, and I embarked on an adventurous experiment to live for six months in my birth state of Washington. Having lived in New Jersey since 1984, I had yearned to go back to the Pacific Northwest, to live closer to my immediate family, and be closer to the majestic landscapes that I had explored as a youth.

Beginning in November 2015, we rented a cabin named “Loony Hollow”, deep in the woods of the Olympic Peninsula. One of my goals during our stay was to do something I'd put on the back burner for many years, namely, compose and perform original jazz music. I moved to the New York City area in 1984 to be part of a songwriting team led by Eugene McDaniels. Also in those early NYC days I played keyboards in a jazz fusion band that needed original music to perform, so I composed for that as well. Then life happened, and composing music slipped by the wayside...until last winter that is!

While living in “Loony Hollow” it wasn't difficult finding inspiration for composing. First came a song I titled “Loony Hollow” that was inspired by our rustic accommodations there on the shore of Dabob Bay. That song opened the floodgates to many more compositions and the need to document them with this recording. Living in such an isolated place, our contact with the outside world was sometimes limited to the PBS radio broadcasts coming out of Seattle. Consequently, I found myself writing songs about the crazy presidential campaign (among other things) that was constantly in the news while we lived in Loony Hollow.

Another unfulfilled dream I began tackling last winter was to become a singer. I utilized recordings of lessons I'd taken over a decade earlier to provide the framework for practicing. However, these exercises took me only so far, so when we returned to New Jersey last Spring, I decided to take singing lessons. My vocal abilities are still in their infancy, but I am loving the learning process, and the endorphins that singing releases in my brain!

One thing I hadn't anticipated when we made the move to Washington state was how much I'd miss New Jersey! Even though I found some excellent musicians to play with in Washington, musicians and gigs were far and few between. One thing I missed was living close to a large community of excellent musicians, many of whom lived within a five mile radius of our home. When I started planning for the recording, I knew I wanted my friend Ben Williams to play trombone on it. Ben lives in the next town over, and as fate would have it, one of my favorite drummers, Lee Finkelstein, lives only a few doors down from Ben. And around the block from them lives an amazing bassist, Gregory Jones, who I used to go hear in NYC. I dubbed this trio of musicians “The Neighborhood”, and they became the core band I used for this album. Weeks before recording, I decided I wanted to add saxophone to the mix. Lee suggested I use the world-renowned saxophonist Lou Marini, his band mate in the Blues Brothers. So Lou graciously came onboard, as did my old friend and guitarist extraordinaire, Bob Devos.

So thanks again for listening to these new creations of mine – my “babies” - that were inspired by our two homes – one in the bustling, crowded environs of New Jersey, and the other in the wild and wooly wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Now you have a sense of what it means to my wife and I to be “Bicoastal”!

UK: The Jazz Jousters-Locations: USA by (2017)

The Jazz Jousters | Locations: USA

Welcome to season five of the Jazz Jousters sessions. After four years of non stop album releases we thought we'd take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. We decided attempt another Locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. So here we go...

MJM would like to present Locations: USA, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of Jazz music in different regions of the world.

In this session we hear the result of each Jouster as they each chose one or more Jazz musicians from the United States and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. However there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on Jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. See what you think of the outcome.

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights In Jazz, New York’s longest running jazz concert series, proudly continues its 45th season at 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center Borough of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers Street, NYC with A Salute To David Amram, featuring the renowned award winning multi-instrumentalist composer/conductor and his quartet with drummer Kevin Twigg, bassist René Hart and percussionist Adam Amran, joined by NEA Jazz Master alto saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, distinguished trombonist Earl McIntyre, veteran pianist Norman Simmons and Multi Grammy Award nominee, drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria, plus, as in all Highlights In Jazz concerts, a surprise special guest.

Versatile multi-instrumentalist/composer David Amram will be honored as this year’s recipient of the Annual Highlights In Jazz Award, which has been presented every year since 1974 to honor a singular living jazz musician for their “matchless musical achievements.” Kleinsinger is proud to add Amram, who he calls a genius, to the auspicious list of Highlights In Jazz Award winners, which includes the likes of Roy Eldridge, Zoot Sims, Lionel Hampton, Roy Haynes, Hank Jones, Dr. Billy Taylor and Frank Wess, pointing to the multitalented instrumentalist/composer’s numerous achievements in both jazz and classical music, in addition to his success as an Academy Award winning film scorer.

Amram says, “It is heart warming and a thrill to receive this honor from Highlights in Jazz. Past performers and honorees Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie were mentors to me over 60 years ago and recent honoree Paquito D’Rivera is a musician who inspires me every time I play with him.  Paquito is a national treasure.”  D’Rivera says in turn, “David Amram is an ideal example of eclecticism and open mind musically speaking. He is one of a kind!”

Amram also has high praise for the other artists who will be feting him at this special event.  “Norman Simmons,” he says, “remains a role model over the decades, as a brilliant artist who reminds all of us of how to achieve the highest goal in music and life … that in addition to playing beautifully, we must always strive to make everyone else sound and feel better, as he always does! And Earl McIntyre is not only a world-class musical artist. He is one of the finest musical educators in the country and continues to spread the light around the world, helping it to discover the lasting values of jazz. Bobby Sanabria is a one man ambassador for all genres of Latin music and able to create ensembles and make a new generation comfortable and conversant in understanding the deep spiritual relationship of jazz and the infinite variety of music South of the border.”

Sanabria proclaims, “David Amram is our modern day Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, and Don Ellis, all rolled into one. I've never met a musician that has so much positive energy for his fellow human being, on or off the bandstand. And to top it off, whether it's him conducting one of his large scale symphonic works, jammin' on a blues, or just getting heavy on the mambo, he's comfortable and virtuosic in any setting. I'm always proud and honored to be in his company."

D’Rivera, McIntyre, Simmons and Sanabria will be joining the trio of drummer Kevin Twigg, bassist René Hart and Amram’s son, percussionist Adam Amram. The elder Amram says, “They have played constantly with me from concert halls in Europe to street festivals in New York. No matter where, when or with who, they always make the music the star.”

All Highlights In Jazz concerts also feature a surprise special guest, chosen from among the music’s finest players.  Some of the biggest stars in jazz who have appeared as guests in previous years have been Eubie Blake, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Savion Glover, Earl Hines, Branford Marsalis, Carmen McRae, Gerry Mulligan, George Shearing, Dr. Billy Taylor, Frank Wess and many others.

The 45th season of Highlights In Jazz continues on April 14, 2017 with Women In Jazz, featuring Cynthia Sayer and her Joyride Band with clarinetist Adrian Cunningham, bassist Mike Weatherly and drummer/washboard percussionist Larry Eagle and vocalist René Marie and her trio pianist John Chin, bassist Elias Bailey and drummer Quentin Baxter and International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Award Winner Leonieke Scheuble.

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights In Jazz, New York’s longest running jazz concert series, continues its record breaking 45th season at 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center Borough of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers Street, New York City, with a special Women In Jazz program featuring the festive multi-dimensional music of Cynthia Sayer and her Joyride Band with clarinetist Adrian Cunningham, the innovative vocal stylings of René Marie plus International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Award Winner pianist Leonieke Scheuble, and, as in all Highlights In Jazz concerts, a surprise special guest.

Cynthia Sayer and her Joyride Band features award winning banjo player and vocalist Cynthia Sayer, who will be making her third Highlights In Jazz appearance.  Her festive group, the Joyride Band, features clarinetist Adrian Cunningham, bassist Mike Weatherly and drummer/washboard percussionist Larry Eagle. Sayer, whose scheduled February Highlights In Jazz concert appearance was snowed out, fills the program slot left open by the recent passing of legendary pianist/vocalist Barbara Carroll.  Sayer first rose to international prominence as a founding member of Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band. A Banjo Hall of Famer, she has performed and recorded with a diverse Who's Who of jazz, pop and classical musicians, including Marvin Hamlisch, Wynton Marsalis, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bruce Springsteen, and the New York Philharmonic. She’s been praised in the New York Times for her “drive and virtuosity,” and by pianist Dick Hyman for her shows that “takes us into places where you’d never expect the banjo to be admitted.”

Joining Sayer on the bill will be Grammy© nominated vocalist/composer René Marie.  In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, she has cemented her reputation as not only a singer, but also as a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Ms. Marie, who will be accompanied by her longstanding trio of pianist John Chin, bassist Elias Bailey and drummer Quentin Baxter, will be making her debut Highlights In Jazz appearance. She declares,  “WOW, 45 years! Congratulations to Jack for his decades long dedication toward keeping jazz alive. I look forward to bringing our music to his series.”

Also making her Highlights In Jazz debut will be the gifted young pianist Leonieke Scheuble the 2013 International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Award Winner. Leonieke (phonetically pronounced “lay-o-nee-ka”) started to play piano sometime after being inspired by “Ray,” the movie based on the life of Ray Charles. Without any prior musical training, she began to spend great lengths of time at the piano creating songs that were rhythmically interesting and compositionally balanced. "All these songs of love have their anchor in the paradoxical world reflected  by Alexis Parsons’ self-titled series of tomes on the theme of conflicted, difficult arrangements
(Self Release; 40:35
★★★★).

Accompanied by pianist Frank Kimbrough, the bloom’s off as Parsons delivers an unmannered “The Winter Of My Discontent,” followed by a wistful look back with “Hello Young Lovers,” only to be followed up by a rare, upbeat swinger with “Just Squeeze Me.” The mood is melancholic, as the more seasoned Parsons’ breathy, desultory delivery reminds us that love is not a game to be entered into lightly."
By John Ephland - "Sirens of Today" - DownBeat Magazine

"....she deserves as much credit for her storytelling abilities as she does for her singing.  She inhabits these songs as if they represent her very being, making Alexis Parsons an alluring listen from start to finish."
