InterSchool Orchestras of New York (ISO) is proud to announce its 2019-2020 gala celebration, A Tribute to Howard Johnson, at Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall, September 18, 2019 at 7:30 pm. The special event will honor the musical legend, who, in his five-decade career, has played alongside luminaries in multiple genres and pioneered the voice of the tuba in jazz. The event will also feature the talents of two-time Grammy-winning musician Taj Mahal and students of ISO. All proceeds from the event will support financial aid and scholarships for ISO students.

“ISO’s mission — to serve all young musicians who want to participate, regardless of ability to pay — is deeply rooted in a long-standing commitment to the children of New York City,” said Karen Geer, executive director of ISO. “We are thrilled to pay tribute to Howard Johnson as a distinguished member of the city’s vibrant musical legacy. His tremendous career and innovations in music are a testament to the creativity, passion, and perseverance our students find through playing in an orchestra and carry with them throughout their lives.”

Gala honoree and performer Howard Johnson stated, “I am honored to be recognized by ISO for my contributions to the music community. Being a musician has opened so many doors in my life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make that possible for a new generation of players. Because of their time in the orchestra, the talented students of ISO will go on to be lifelong supporters of the arts, no matter their career path. The funds raised as part of this event will help make that vision possible.”

A Tribute to Howard Johnson will raise funds to support scholarships and financial aid for ISO students. As a critical element of ISO’s mission to nurture young musicians, no child has ever been turned away because of financial need; 80% of ISO students receive some form of financial assistance, and the organization awards nearly $250,000 in scholarships each year.

Sponsorships for the gala start at $2,500 and include dinner and an evening of performances by Taj Mahal, Gravity, the Levon Helm horns, the Beartones, and members of the ISO Symphony.  For more information, visit isorch.org or call (212) 410-0370.  Tickets will be sold closer to the date of the event.

Howard Johnson is a legendary performer and mentor to a generation of African-American musicians. Over the past half century, Johnson has appeared on hundreds of albums playing tuba, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, electric bass and other instruments with the giants of many genres. New York Times critic Nate Chinen credits Johnson as “the figure most responsible for the tuba’s current status as a full-fledged jazz voice.” Arriving in New York in the early ’60s, Johnson quickly gained notoriety as a sideman, recording and performing with Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Buddy Rich, Chick Corea, John Lennon, Paul Simon, and eventually hundreds of others. As a tubist, Johnson was the first to demand prominent solo roles for the instrument in jazz and was heavily involved in the design and manufacture of a specialist tuba for jazz playing. In 1975, Johnson was appointed the inaugural bandleader of The Saturday Night Live Band. He was also a long-time muse to innovators such as Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, and George Gruntz, who created music to showcase the multi-instrumentalist’s abilities, and inspired him in his life-long quest to expand the range and repertoire of the less familiar instruments in jazz and popular music.

Sparking interest in music, especially in young people, has always been of paramount importance to Howard Johnson. It’s his life’s mission, likely fueled by his own passion for the art that first flared in junior high school. As a youngster, he spent every free minute in the band room, investigating the contents of the mysterious and intriguingly shaped instrument cases. He eventually tried his hand at many of the instruments he first encountered there, an opportunity to explore not afforded to many 21stcentury students, as arts programs in schools dwindle.

Supporting this voyage to musical discovery—and the self-discovery inherent in musical expression—is a mission dear to the heart of this legendary musician. Howard Johnson notes that while many people in the world have knowledge and talent, each individual has something unique and important to contribute, if given a chance: “What you give of yourself, there’s nothing that can beat that,” he declares.

Founded in 1972, the InterSchool Orchestras of New York creates opportunities for school-aged children in New York City to make music together through a tiered system of four orchestras, serving beginners to pre-conservatory-level players. ISO provides a nurturing environment where all children can realize their personal best, achieve high artistic standards, and share their music with the community. Under the leadership of executive director Karen Geer, ISO serves nearly 300 students from diverse backgrounds living in each of the five boroughs and surrounding areas. Generous financial aid and scholarships ensure that every child can participate.

In its distinguished 47-year history, ISO has collaborated with artists and ensembles including James Earl Jones, David Amram, Raúl Jaurena, Canadian Brass, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, and on stages including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United Nations. Additionally, ISO has been featured on WNET’s (PBS) NYC-ARTS; participated in the Unity Youth Symphony as part of the HBO documentary Landfill Harmonic; and is a League of American Orchestras award winner as well as a member of the Channel 13 Hall of Fame.

ISO is supported in part by funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts.

USA: Craft Recordings Commemorates 70 Years of Prestige Records

CRAFT RECORDINGS COMMEMORATES 70 YEARS OF PRESTIGE RECORDS WITH
NEW TITLES, DELUXE REISSUES AND EXCLUSIVE DIGITAL CONTENT

LEGENDARY JAZZ LABELS CATALOG INCLUDES RECORDINGS FROM
MILES DAVIS, THELONIOUS MONK, AND SONNY ROLLINS, AMONG MANY OTHERS

NEW COLLECTION PRESENTING JOHN COLTRANE’S 1958 PRESTIGE RECORDINGS AVAILABLE NOW

Los Angeles, CA (April 10, 2019) - 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Prestige Records, one of the most revered jazz labels in the world. Throughout the ’50s and ’60s, Prestige was at the forefront of modern jazz, releasing sessions from some of the most influential names in music, including Miles DavisJohn ColtraneThelonious MonkStan Getz, and Sonny Rollins. To honor the history of this pioneering label and its exceptional output, Craft Recordings will release a variety of content throughout the year, including deluxe box sets and vinyl reissues, as well as video content and curated playlists.

Kicking off the campaign is a new box set, Coltrane ’58: The Prestige Recordings (5-CD & digital formats available now, and 8-LP out on April 26th), which chronicles the saxophonist’s breakout year. Featuring all 37 tracks Coltrane recorded as a leader or co-leader for Prestige in those twelve months, Coltrane ’58 captures the artist in creative high gear—developing the signature improvisational style that journalist Ira Gitler famously dubbed “sheets of sound.” The newly remastered release includes extensive liner notes from GRAMMY® Award-winning music historian Ashley Kahn, plus images of rare ephemera and historical photographs of the saxophonist and his collaborators.

Special Coltrane ’58 bundle packages featuring a limited edition Prestige t-shirt are available exclusively via the Craft Recordings online store: Click here

A newly curated playlist, Prestige 70: Jazz Classicshas also just launched. Currently streaming on SpotifyApple MusicPandora, and YouTube (click here to listen), the playlist features a handpicked selection of 70 classic tracks from the label. With titles from the likes ofKenny BurrellRusty BryantRed Garland, and Coleman Hawkins, as well as iconic takes from John ColtraneMiles DavisSonny Rollins, and Thelonious Monk, the collection showcases not only the timeless appeal of Prestige’s music, but also the importance of its catalog to the development of modern music.

Throughout 2019, Craft will take a deeper look at the label’s history and incredible roster of talent through special video content and additional playlists. Contests, as well as additional releases, will be announced later in the year.

April also marks Jazz Appreciation Month, whose 2019 theme is “Jazz Beyond Borders.” Many artists under Prestige could not be more fitting to this subject. John Coltrane, a self-declared humanist, not only gained fame around the world with his music (his well-documented 1966 Japanese tour proves just how far-reaching his influence was) but also strove to break boundaries at home, during the height of the civil rights movement. Sonny Rollins, too, crossed a variety of borders. A strong follower of Eastern philosophies, Rollins tackled issues of racial inequality head-on, yet peacefully, through his recordings. Musically, Rollins has not only performed with some of the biggest names in his own genre, but he also crossed over into pop and rock territory, performing with artists like the Rolling Stones, and bringing a variety of musical influences into his own compositions. Both artists, along with countless others on the label’s roster, continue to garner new generations of fans around the world.

Founded in 1949 by producer Bob Weinstock, Prestige was on the cutting-edge of jazz, helping to usher in the eras of bop, hard-bop and soul jazz in the ’50s, while later branching out into free jazz and fusion through the ’60s. Over the next two decades, Prestige would develop the careers of some of the biggest names in jazz, and release hundreds of albums, many of which were recorded in the Hackensack, NJ studio of renowned engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Notable titles include Miles, Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’ and Steamin’ from the Miles Davis Quintet, Etta Jones’Don’t Go to Strangers, the Modern Jazz Quartet’s Django, Eric Dolphy’s Out There, and Sonny Rollins’ career-defining 1956 LP, Saxophone Colossus (as well as Tenor Madness, whose title track was recently inducted into the GRAMMY® Hall of Fame and is the only known duet recording by Rollins and John Coltrane). Soul jazz classics such as Charles Kynard’s Afro-Disiac, Gene Ammons’ Boss Tenor and Charles Earland’s Black Talk! round out the latter decade of the label under Weinstock.

In the early ’70s, Prestige was sold to Fantasy Records (home to the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Vince Guaraldi), which itself became part of the Concord music family in 2004. The imprint still holds a vibrant presence today with carefully curated reissues from the catalog label at Concord, Craft Recordings.

"Some of the most influential artists and significant recordings in the history of jazz are on the Prestige label," says Sig Sigworth, President of Craft Recordings. "It's a tremendous honor for Craft Recordings to be the stewards of that timeless musical legacy."

USA; Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band Presents A Tribute to Ed Xiques Sunday, June 3rd 8pm Live At The Falcon

Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band Presents:
A Tribute to Ed Xiques

Celebrated Jazz Saxophonist/Composer/Educator Ed Xiques
to be honored on June 3 at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY

Free concert focuses on original compositions
by Hudson Valley resident Ed Xiques

Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band shines a spotlight on the music of veteran jazz musician Ed Xiques at a free concert honoring the saxophonist/composer/arranger/educator at the Falcon in Marlboro, NY, on June 3.

Xiques, a mainstay of the New York jazz scene for several decades, is known for his playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Maria Schneider, Frank Foster and a host of others.

According to Composers Big Band leader Diane Moser, “Performing at The Falcon will give us the chance to share with his friends and family all of the wonderful music Ed Xiques has been writing over the last 20 years. He’s such a gracious, funny, generous and spiritual guy. We love his stories and his wonderful spirit.”
Moser continues, “For our June 3 date at The Falcon, we plan on playing all of Ed’s music. We have 12 big band charts by Ed in our book, eight of which are originals, and we’ll play a few Jaki Byard charts—when Ed was 19 years old, he performed with Jaki in Boston. We’ll also play charts that Ed performed and recorded with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.”

Throughout his five-decade-long performing career, Ed Xiques has repeatedly proved himself the consummate music pro, who can always be counted on to give his all, whether you catch him at the Village Vanguard, a Broadway theater, or an arena. Audiences around the globe have heard Xiques play with jazz greats including Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin, Duke Pearson, Mario Bauza, and Woody Herman, vocal legends such as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Charles, and Liza Minnelli, and pop and rock icons like Aerosmith, The Jackson Five, Ten Wheel Drive, and Gladys Knight.

Xiques has appeared on more than 50 recordings, about a third of them with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band. As a leader, he has released two albums featuring his own original compositions. Ed is a long-time member of the music faculty at Vassar College.

The saxophonist is also a long-time resident composer with the Montclair, NJ-based Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band: This month marks the 20thanniversary of his tenure with the ensemble.

“When it came time for me to find a lead alto player for the Composers Big Band in 1997, I called Ed,” Moser remembers. “His wife, Rosemary, answered the phone and told me that he was on a plane coming back from Russia, where he’d been on tour with Liza Minelli. Rosemary added that she knew he would want to come play.” She was right—Ed was onstage with Moser’s band within a week.

“Ed has been the heart and soul of our big band for the past 20 years, and this is our tribute to him, an amazing musician, colleague and dear friend,” Moser declares.

Over the past two decades, pianist and composer Moser has built a cult following in the New York metropolitan area with her Composers Big Band. At their frequent gigs, Moser’s CBB has showcased always-inspired works by band members and more than 100 guest artists, including internationally acclaimed jazz icons such as Jane Ira Bloom, Mark Dresser, Howard Johnson, Oliver Lake, and Michele Rosewoman.

Formed by Moser and a dedicated group of musicians and composers with the intention of exploring the possibilities of big band music and moving it forward, the band has lived up to its mission since its January 1997 debut gig.

Keeping a big band together for 20 years is no small feat, especially when it’s made up of players who lead their own bands and/or are in-demand sidemen. There’s a warm, family vibe to the DMCBB, presuming your family is enormous, talented, and eager to work and play together at every opportunity. After two decades, some of the original band members are still on the bandstand at every gig.

In addition to pianist Moser, the current DMCBB lineup includes: Saxes: Ed Xiques, Rob Middleton, Marty Fogel, Barbara Cifelli, Craig Yaremko, Tom Colao; Trombones: Erick Storckman, Ben Williams, Matt Haviland, Dennis Argul; Trumpets: Mike Spengler, Jim Cifelli, Chris Rogers, Rob Henke; Rhythm: Larry Maltz (guitar), Andy Eulau (bass), Scott Neumann (drums).

Regardless of the occasion or the repertoire, the style, or the complexity of the music, listeners can count on each Diane Moser’s Composer’s Big Band concert being heartfelt, dedicated, adventurous and flat-out fun: Listeners are gonna be entertained and inspired.

Their June 3 appreciation of their long-time and beloved colleague Ed Xiques will be no exception!

USA/INDONESIA: Tribute to Allan Holdsworth by simakDialog & MoonJune - Free Download of Riza Arshad's arrangement of Water On The Brain Pt. 2

Dear Friends In Music

Exactly one year ago, on April 15, 2017, a dear friend died.

There is no greater measure of a life well lived than the amount of people he had impacted, and by that measure the artist Allan Holdsworth lived a very good life. This man took a plank of wood, a few strings, and some wires and transformed people's lives in a way that few others have. The ultimate genius of the rarest kind. One of THE greatest musicians ever lived. So much history with Allan Holdsworth between 2001-2016.

Rest In Peace, Allan Holdsworth.
Thank You for everything.
I miss You.

****************************************************

Earlier last year, on January 13, 2017, one of my best friend died as well, the iconic Indonesian piano maestro, Riza Arshad, of simakDialog, a progressive jazz band from Jakarta, Indonesia. For simakDialog's last tour in the USA, in November of 2014, Riza Arshad arranged one tune of Allan Holdsworth for the band's live repertoire: Water On The Brain, Part 2 , originally recorded on the seminal album "Road Games" (1983). The tune was played only on the band's performances in New York, NY (ShapeSHifter Lab), Baltimore, MD (Orion Studios) and Pamberton, NJ (Burlington County College, Gagliarchives Radio Show). We planned to release a live album in mid 2017 using recordings from the Baltimore show, but Riza's premature death stopped our plans. Eventually one day, the Live In Baltimore 2014 will come out, but I thought I would like to tribute Allan Holdsworth with Riza Arshad's tribute to Allan.

The live version of Water On The Brain, Part 2 by simakDialog is available for FREE DOWNLOAD until April 22, 2018.
