A new PBS special brings viewers an inside look at the 2019 All-Star Global Concert from Melbourne, Australia. Featuring incredible performances by jazz masters from nearly a dozen countries, including UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, Joey DeFrancesco, Kurt Elling, Ledisi, Jane Monheit, James Morrison, Antonio Sánchez, Somi, Ben Williams, Lizz Wright and many more, under the musical direction of John Beasley. Presented each year on PBS, this star-studded concert features more than two dozen world-renowned artists in an unforgettable evening of music at the Arts Centre Melbourne's Hamer Hall.

Declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and recognized on the official calendar of the United Nations, International Jazz Day is the one day each year on which jazz is celebrated worldwide, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities in more than 190 countries on all seven continents. At the heart of every celebration is the extraordinary All-Star Global Concert, which brings together renowned artists from all genres to pay tribute to this truly American music. Past years have seen artists from Stevie Wonder to Aretha Franklin to Esperanza Spalding join other legendary artists from around the world to showcase jazz and its ability to bring together people of all different cultures.

AUSTRALIA: INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY #JazzDay - April 30

The International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert in Melbourne, Australia on April 30, will feature over 30 World-Renowned Artists including Herbie Hancock, James Morrison, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock announced the program for the 2019 edition of International Jazz Day, which will be launched in Australia and celebrated in more than 190 countries. International Jazz Day brings together countries and communities worldwide every April 30 to celebrate the art of jazz, highlighting its important role in encouraging dialogue, combating discrimination and promoting human dignity. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz is UNESCO's official partner in the organization and promotion of International Jazz Day.

The International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert will be held at the Arts Centre Melbourne's beautiful Hamer Hall and will be webcast via JazzDayFacebookUNESCO and the United Nations.


Iconic jazz pianist Herbie Hancock (USA) and acclaimed trumpeterJames Morrison (Australia) will serve as artistic co-directors of the All-Star Global Concert, and John Beasley (USA) will serve as the evening's musical director. The concert will feature performances by an international roster of artists from more than a dozen countries. Confirmed artists include: Cieavash Arian (Iran), William Barton(Australia), Dee Dee Bridgewater (USA), Brian Blade (USA), Till Brönner (Germany), A Bu (China), Igor Butman (Russian Federation), Joey DeFrancesco (USA), Eli Degibri (Israel), Kurt Elling (USA), Antonio Hart (USA), Matthew Jodrell (Australia),Ledisi (USA), Eijiro Nakagawa (Japan), Mark Nightingale(United Kingdom), Chico Pinheiro (Brazil), Tineke Postma(Netherlands), Eric Reed (USA), Antonio Sánchez (Mexico),Nathan Schreiber (Australia), Somi (Rwanda/Uganda), Lizz Wright (USA), Tarek Yamani (Lebanon). More artists are expected to be announced.

Thousands of other events all over the world will celebrate jazz as a universal language of peace, with jazz-themed films, lectures, book readings, theatre performances and panel discussions, as well as jam sessions, master classes, and radio and television broadcasts. As in previous years, a majority of International Jazz Day partner activities will focus on education and community impact, benefitting millions of students, academics, professional musicians and music lovers everywhere.

The 2018 All-Star Global Concert featured nearly three dozen acclaimed artists representing 14 countries. Herbie Hancock and Igor Butman served as co-artistic directors, and John Beasley was the musical director. Dimitri Vassilakis presents “Jazz Democracy”.

Concept in brief:
A unique forum/performance to showcase how jazz, this great American art form has become global and has embraced the broad democratic values that were first established in ancient Greece.
Also how jazz as a universal language can teach us again how to develop dialogue in equal terms and communicate in a more humane, democratic and creative way.

Presentation:
The presentation at the United Nations in New York focuses on concept elements in a jazz performance that can be utilized and embraced when we approach work environment, social, cultural or political issues.
It will also showcase how jazz has always accepted and integrated minority groups, an issue especially relevant to the present day and age of global economic and refugee crisis.
On the other end it will also comment on education, connection with dance, visual arts plus new technologies in art and society and the ongoing dialogue with artificial intelligence.
This global event coincides with International Jazz Day celebrations by UNESCO, Thelonius Monk Institute and April jazz appreciation month established by the Smithsonian Institute.

Dimitri Vassilakis will coordinate, talk and perform with an international jazz ensemble of famous jazz legends and personalities from the arts, humanities and science.

- Maria Theofili Permanent Representative of Greece at the UN.
- Dave Liebman: NEA jazz master, founder and artistic director of IASJ International Association of Schools of Jazz.
- Stavros Lambrinidis: European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights and ex-minister of Greek Foreign Affairs.
- Spike Wilner: Smalls and Mezzrow 2 historic NY jazz clubs owner and acclaimed jazz pianist.
- Jeff «Tain» Watts celebrated top drummer worldwide.
- Gil Weinberg: head of robotics and AI at Georgia Tech Music department. Collaborator of Dimitri Vassilakis for jazz mapping project.
- Alan Bates: Director of historic jazz label Candid Records (will appear on video or skype).
- Jeanne Bresciani: director of Isadora Duncan International Institute New York IDII.
- Lydia Venieri: Greek visual artist living in New York.
- Aidan Levy: jazz critic, author, Jazz Journalist Association.

Jazz Democracy International Ensemble:
David Liebman, Jeff «Tain» Watts, Benito Gonzales, Essiet Essiet, Spike Wilner, Craig Bailey, Sylvia Cuenca andinternational jazz musicians living and studying in New York.

Aims, goals:
With “jazz democracy” as a unifying umbrella the aim is to integrate musicians, artists and performers from different ethnicities and backgrounds with the aid of new technologies, to show how effective and valuable can be this type of communication, collaboration and appreciation to other aspects of social and cultural life.
“Jazz Democracy NPO”is a non-profit organization dedicated to organize open discussions, forums, performances educational activities and workshops to deliver and spread the jazz and democracy spirit through the global community.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock today announced the program for the 2018 edition of International Jazz Day, with events in Saint Petersburg (Russian Federation), this year's Global Host City, and over 190 countries around the world.

A series of educational and outreach programs will take place in the Global Host City, where the Day will culminate in an extraordinary all-star concert at the historic Mariinsky Theatre, an event which will be streamed live worldwide. Partners on the seven continents will celebrate jazz as a universal language of peace on International Jazz Day, celebrated every year on 30 April.

On 22 April, a special concert will commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, in the city's historic Congo Square. This will start the official countdown to International Jazz Day, kicking off a series of education programs throughout New Orleans public schools and around the world. The concert in Congo Square will feature performances by Herbie HancockTerence BlanchardPatti AustinLedisi and many more and will start at 2 pm and streamed on 30 April. See www.JazzDay.com
