From 2014 till 2016, composer/guitarist António Silva had the opportunity to live abroad from Portugal in three different countries: Finland, Sweden and Denmark. There he met different cultures and musical traditions and played with musicians that came from all over the world.
This experience resulted in the creation of ten original compositions and the collaboration with Irish saxophonist Carolyn Goodwin to create the group António Silva Quartet.
Together they record the album “Up Lift” in 2016 with Danish musicians Frederik Hagner and Tobias Andreassen and two international renown guests: Aaron Goldberg from USA and Jesper Bodilsen from Denmark.
In 2017, to promote the release of “Up Lift”, António and Carolyn (the core of the group) play in Ethno-Jazz Festival in Moldova with bass player Johnny Åman and the drummer Anders Vestergård both from Sweden.
This is the first work that António Silva releases in his own name after his group Ararur have won the “13th Independent Music Awards” in the category of Best Jazz with Vocals Album

" Todd Brunel is the bandleader for this fantastic high-energy CD that features Andrew Hickman doing tenor sax, percussion; Mike Carey on alto sax, flute; Todd Brunel on clarinets, ethnic flute; John Funkhouser doing double bass, piano and Gary Fieldman on drums.
When you consider that the dictionary says these are “physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness in an organism’s environment”, you’ll realize that you’re probably going to up for the full-cycle spinning these red-hot & smokin’ rhythmic smokers over & over (& over) again!
Tunes like the 6:11 “Sashes to Sashes” will W-O-W you with more than just cute titles… Funkhouser’s bass drives this one into total oblivion, & the screeches (at about 5:30) definitely reminded me of some of the free jazz sessions I used to do back in the day!
Excellent recording quality and ultra-high energy drive this one to an immediate MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of (a perfect) 5.00… which means that this one gets the “PICK” of this issue for “best accessible free jazz”!

About Hyungjin Choi:
A native South Korean, Hyungjin Choi is a New York based pianist. She
graduated from the prestigious Seoul Institute of the Arts in 2006 and
then moved to New York to attend the New School for Jazz and
Contemporary Music where she earned a BFA in performing arts. Hyungjin
has recorded and performed actively in many venues across the United
States as both a backing player and bandleader / solo artist. She is
currently the music director at Onnuri In2 Church in Manhattan and a
faculty of the Music School of Westchester and Riverdale Music Studio.

Their music is a fusion of jazz, rock, blues, funk, r&b music. One can hear influences of Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Dave Brubeck, Weather Report, John Scofield, John Coltrane, Avishai Cohen, Vital Information, Yellowjackets etc...
They recently got out of studio where they recorded demo versions of compositions which will see the light of the day on their first album. Some music videos are in plan and attending various music festivals in the region.
