USA: John Klopotowski - Project 59 (2016)

John Klopotowski | Project 59
"Project 59" is my first recording as a leader and was done in August 2015 at Tedesco Studio in Paramus, NJ. I reunited with my old friend pianist Rave Tesar for the project, and the CD features Rave’s Trio with Kermit Driscoll on bass and Bill Tesar on drums as the rhythm section. We are also joined by another longtime close friend, Bob Keller on tenor saxophone.

The music consists of a typical jazz guitar recital or concert that I would perform if the opportunity were present. As this is my first recording as a leader, I drew on material related to key influences over my time as a student and player of jazz.

Project 59 has meant a great deal to me and has represented the opportunity to celebrate friendship, family, love, great art, excellence, hard work, and acceptance of ‘what is’! We offer our music to listeners with best wishes. Please enjoy!

USA: Christian Tamburr, Takana Miyamoto & Keita Ogawa-People Talk (CTM 2015)

Christian Tamburr, Takana Miyamoto & Keita Ogawa | People Talk
People Talk marks my sixth self-produced album and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have collaborated with two of the most dynamic performers in the world, pianist Takana Miyamoto and percussionist Keita Ogawa. As most of my performances around the world utilize a quartet or quintet configuration, I wanted to explore a new approach both sonically and compositionally. I found myself writing arrangements specifically for this unique trio’s instrumentation but also for the players themselves. The album embraces sounds from around the world incorporating a traditional jazz approach with South American and Asian influences.

My original composition, La Lucha Duro ( “The Hard Fight”), was inspired by watching UFC fighter Cain Velesquez in a recent bout against Fabricio Werdum. You can hear the battle between the two fighters, a moment when a landed punch sends Cain to the mat, and then back up again to finish the fight. I wrote People Talk after hearing friend and pianist Vinnie Falcon play me an obscure Bill Evans song. The haunting melody ultimately led to the creation of this title track. The City Suite features three songs that underscore my experiences and memories from three of my favorite cities; New York, Paris and Tokyo. As I hear these songs, I can visualize people walking their dogs through central park, a couple sitting in a French cafe with two glasses of Bordeaux and looking out at the countryside while riding the subway though the suburbs of Tokyo.

I always wish to reach a wide demographic of listeners. The inclusion of Lennon and McCartney’s “Norwegian Wood” was a fun way to take one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar with my father and put a new spin on it. “Alone Together” is a commonly played standard, however this arrangement is influenced by the rhythms of the Brazilian Panderio, while Gershwin’s 'Summertime' is shaped by the romantic dance of the Tango. "Pure Imagination" is a beautiful timeless composition and I couldn’t think of a more dynamic ensemble to bring this song to life. The album closes with an original composition by Takana Miyamoto, Firefly Creek, which captures the beauty and stillness of the Japanese Gardens.

USA: Jemal Ramirez-Pomponio (2015)

Jemal Ramirez | Pomponio
In 2013, I began making a greater attempt to play gigs and be on the music scene. Some of the musicians I have been working with over the past two years are Ben Torres (Pacific Mambo Orchestra), Cyril Guirard, Brian Ho, John Shifflet, Chris Shahin and The Cafe Stritch Jam Session.

I am aiming to play more gigs that are of the highest caliber of musicianship for audiences that know and respect jazz and improvisational music. I am interested in traveling in the summer especially for national and international music festivals.

Having refined my musicianship and organizational skills while band leading in public schools these past 9 years, I feel compelled to take on band leading in the professional world. I have reestablished musical associations with exceptionally talented colleagues and have made newer associations with colleagues of the highest caliber.

My most recently recorded project is my first solo album, titled “Pomponio”. It features the amazingly wonderful Warren Wolf on marimba and vibraphone, the remarkable Joel Behrman on trumpet, the sincerely feisty Howard Wiley on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, the formidable Matthew Clark on piano, wise man John Shifflet on double bass, the groovin’ John Santos on percussion and myself on drum set and a plethora of cymbals.

LIVE INTENTIONALLY! was recorded live. I wanted to capture the spontaneous intensity and energy of playing jazz without a safety net. I also wanted to test my own performance and improvisatory skills in real time. I wanted to “walk the walk” without relying on overdubbing solos later or “fixes-in-the-mix.” Pianist Eric Olsen, bassist Dmitri Kolesnik, drummer Jimmy Madison and I set up together at Tom Tedesco Studios. I counted off my three originals and six standards and the result is this recording.

The message of the title is the same whether LIVE INTENTIONALLY! strikes you as “intentionally recorded live!” or “live your life with intentionality!” This is our genuine, spontaneous playing, reaching for all the joy and beauty we could capture in each moment. I’d like to express my gratitude for the brilliant contribu- ions of Jack Wilkins, Bucky Pizzarrelli, Tom Tedesco, Luis Guell and my outstanding collaborators Eric Olsen, Dmitri Kolesnik and Jimmy Madison. I sincerely hope you enjoy it. Larry Newcomb PhD Guitarist Larry Newcomb performs classic and original jazz and blues both as a soloist and in duo, trio and quartet ensembles. Larry has contributed a wealth of electric and acoustic guitar stylings in performances and on recordings with Bucky Pizzarelli, Jack Wilkins, Seleno Clarke, Billy Kaye, Jon Weiss, Mike Camoia, Larry Newcomb Trio, his duo Jonaitis & Newcomb, the band Wolfgang’s Revenge and with Babs Winn & the Kickin’ Boogie Band.

Newcomb has studied with guitar masters Bucky Pizzarelli, Mark Elf, Pat Martino, Howard Roberts and Randy Johnston. His affable performing style is informed by a PhD in Music History and a seasoned master’s understanding of the jazz idiom.

The path to jazz mastery is long, challenging, rewarding and never-ending. I started out transcribing then quoting great blues guitarists including B. B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. In my early 20s, I heard Jim Hall, George Benson, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis and Kenny Burrell. My direction was established. I slowly developed a repertoire of standard tunes; and, by transposing the work of the masters, I learned to address each harmonic element of a tune in its own rite--especially the creation and resolution of tension from each dominant chord to the temporary or permanent tonic. Throughout my musical journey, I’ve strived to play what I hear, and to make each note ring with colorful, clear and heartfelt beauty.

GERMANY : Joe Haider Jazz Orchestra ‎– Keep It Dark (Double Moon Records 2015)

Cover

80. The number stands there as if chiseled in stone. A birthday with numbers as round as a slowly closing circle. A life lived. Joe Haider has filled a more than exciting chapter in the book of German jazz history, something that can be said with complete justification. The guy is certainly a milestone on the piano too. However, he is also one of the most overlooked and not listened to. Is he also an innovator? If you think that real innovation lies these days in resisting the oversized gripping arms of the spirit of the times uncompromisingly, then yes. And a role model? Musically in every respect. In other respects, however, the birthday boy even has doubts himself, at least in terms of his past. But one thing is certain: Joe Haider is without a doubt an original and a creator of a certain style. He is one of the most important German jazz musicians of the postwar period.

(1) - "THINK LIKE A DRUMMER" - CANADIAN MUSICIAN MAGAZINE

I suppose this is an unlikely topic for a flute player but it’s the subject of an article I wrote which is now appearing in the Woodwinds column of the current issue (i.e., January/February 2016) of Canadian Musician magazine.

For those who are not subscribers to CM but who are interested nonetheless, just drop me a line (at extremeflute@look.ca) and I can send along of the original draft.

You can also access the edited article here (on page 29):

(2) - ARETHA!

If ever there was an apt demonstration of the continuing majesty and magnitude of Aretha Franklin, then this is it!  Indeed, both Carole King and Barack Obama were profoundly moved…as was everyone else in the audience…by what was an genuinely powerful performance! (This clip is from the "Kennedy Centre Honours" concert that took place in December 2015 during which Aretha totally eclipsed everyone and it is about four-and-a-half minutes in length.)

I might add that Mark Helman was good enough to alert me to an Aretha Franklin recording that I didn’t know about (Rare & Unreleased Recordings From the Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul, released on Atlantic Records in 2007)…It is a genuine revelation!…Here is an iTunes link to the album:

(3) - SOME FORTHCOMING GIGS

[NOTE:  The following gig listing is in DESCENDING order.  You can always find a current/updated listing at the following link:  http://www.extremeflute.com/contact.html  Finally, don’t hesitate to contact me if you need or want any flute, alto flute or piccolo work…or flute/improvisation lessons or coaching!…]

CANADA: Myriad3- TELL((CHIP)) (ALMA RECORDS 2015)

TELL((CHIP))

One of the signatures of internationally-acclaimed Toronto jazz trio Myriad3 is their sense of creative adventurousness and musical open-mindedness. That is dramatically showcased now with the re-creation of their 2012 debut release Tell, as a chiptunes album.

With the support of his bandmates, bassist Dan Fortin and drummer Ernesto Cervini, Chris Donnelly was the mastermind behind this album. To create Tell((chip)), he had to download virtual instruments and experiment with different layers of software to come up with authentic chip sounds. "Each track took 50 to 60 hours of work," he recalls. "A note for note translation from the original just wouldn't work, so I ended up reinventing an orchestra for each track, tweaking each one to explore the possibilities." ALMA RECORDS

The time was well spent, as the results are striking. To take a trip into a fascinating new musical world, check out Tell((chip)) today.
