Cloud Tree Gallery presents the world premiere of Dreaming Hildegard, the latest collaborative work by Alex Coke and Christopher Hynes. Inspired by 11th-century mystic and visionary Hildegard of Bingen, Hynes’ paintings and Coke’s music create a world of sight and sound that is spiritual, meditative, and thought provoking. This show is not to be missed!

On opening night, Friday Oct. 11th at 8pm, MAE trio (Masumi Jones, drums, Alex Coke, flutes, tenor saxophone, and Elaine Barber, harp) perform the World Premiere of Coke’s Dreaming Hildegard for the opening of Hynes’ art show.

On May 6th, World Accordion Day 2018 is celebrated. In Sweden, Marco Lo Russo will be protagonist, with his Made in Italy concept: exporting Italian art abroad, as has already happened in other countries (Mexico, Cuba, USA, Africa, Canada, etc.).

 

Marco Lo Russo, accordionist of Oscar Winner Nicola Piovani, for the soundtrack of the film Life is Beautiful by and withRoberto Benigni, is a composer and producer as well as a professor in Conservatory of Music. Among the successes of the2017/2018 season the 7 Days finalist at Eurovision Song Contest 2017, the realization of the soundtrack of the film CityZendirected by Ruggero Gabbai, broadcast on SKY TV, and the composition of the Ave Maria dedicated to Pope Francis.

 

The World Accordion Day 2018, on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the instrument, was established in 2009, with the support of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) and Accordions Worldwide. In what promises to be a stellar evening of excellent composition and musicianship,
sax and flute master Alex Coke performs his own music with Austin's alternative lounge band Mood Illusion at The Carousel Lounge.

A Dallas native and righteous contender in the tough Texas Tenor tradition (whose flute playing makes good argument for a tough Texas flute player poll), Alex Coke's multifarious projects have included studies of Leadbelly and prison work songs, musical meditations on war and peace, an award winning popular post bop band, the Worthy Constituents, as well as a frequent featured soloist with Klezmer, Cuban, Indian and African musicians and a touring and recording member of both Texas' Creative Opportunity Orchestra and Holland's Willem Breuker Kollektief.

The Mood Illusion is a group of musicians that put lounge music through the blender of open improvisation and medieval composition. The core group features Bob Hoffnar on pedal steel guitar, Stephen Bidwell on drums, Mike St Clair on trombone and Janie Cowan on bass.

USA TARANA NEWS: Kennedy Center and beyond/2016

Hey All!
It’s been a while since I’ve written with any updates, so I’d like to use this opportunity to share some of the year’s highlights below (with links!) We’ve had a full year of memorable tours, performances and collaborations.

Early on, I was given an opportunity to curate a night at the Outtosee Festival. See the Village Voice preview HERE.
My band Tarana performed at the prestigious Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (Urbana, IL), and Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, toured Mexico, performed at the New Music Summit (Austin), and now we cap off the year with a small Canadian tour, where we return to the amazing Yarbird Suite in Edmonton, AB on October 8^th.
I’ve brought the trio and quartet versions of Tarana here in the past, and I’m excited to return with a new line-up and music.  We will also undertake a unique workshop at the University of Alberta on the intersection of technology, improvisation and world-music.

After this Canadian tour, we’re going to take a break to work intensively on our next full-length album which will feature amazing guests from India, China, Mexico and South Africa (to be revealed at a later date!) So, lots in the works for 2017, including tours of the South-East US, a return to Mexico and spring European festivals.  Forward momentum, we keep on. Thanks for reading!

TURKEY: The 23rd İzmir European Jazz Festival, organized by the İzmir Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSEV), will be held between March 3 and 19.

The European Jazz Festival will be held for the 23rd time this year between March 3 and 19 in İzmir. The event will feature concerts as well as open events to the public such as workshops and talks

The 23rd İzmir European Jazz Festival, organized by the İzmir Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSEV), will be held between March 3 and 19.

The festival will host 11 concerts, says İKSEV Executive Board Chair Filiz Eczacıbaşı Sarper.

“As well as concerts, the festival will feature workshops, an exhibition, a seminar, a film screening and talks. The festival poster has been determined as a result of a competition. Also, 35 posters … will be displayed at an exhibition in the opening day of the festival.”

İlhan Erşahin, who has been living in New York for 20 years, will give the opening concert of the festival with his project, İlhan Erşahin’s Istanbul Sessions, on March 3 at the Ahmet Adnan Saygun Arts Center (AASSM). The band will perform works from their third studio album, “Istanbul Underground.”

On March 5, İzmir’s jazz lovers will have a chance to listen to acclaimed German pianist Markus Horn’s soundtrack for F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror” accompanied by the silent movie.

The VEIN Trio featuring Oğuz Büyükberber from Switzerland, French rising star Agathe Jazz Quartet and Slovakians Maria Kmetkova on harp and Pavol Bereza on guitar will perform at the festival, along with the Ayça Gündüz Quartet featuring Greek jazz pianist George Kontrafouris, award-winning Juan Garcia-Herreros “Snow Owl” from Austria, Florin Raducanu Jazz Balance from Romania, outstanding guitarist and instructor Luca Costantini from Italy and Piotr Baron Quintet representing Polish Jazz.

This year, a number of “Open Events” will also be organized as part of the festival. A Lindy Hop dance workshop, a Jazz-motion stop-motion animation workshop, a poem and jazz conversation and a jazz records conversation have been added to the program alongside with the traditional workshops, exhibitions and seminars that take place every year.

Reeds & Deeds originated as a one-off happening dedicated to the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. A passionate and inventive improviser, who played multiple saxophones at the same time, Kirk was a gifted composer as well, who wrote catchy themes. According to Rahsaan’s own proverb: Bright Moments!

Both Alex Coke and Frans Vermeerssen (who played together in Willem Breuker Kollektief) had previously released albums with Kirk’s music. Saxophonist Bo van de Graaff is a great admirer as well. Reeds & Deeds features the eccentric rhythm section with Michiel Braam, Arjen Gorter and Makki van Engelen. The band name was taken from Kirk’s eponymous album from 1963.

“Reeds & Deeds”, begon als een eenmalige happening rondom de muziek van Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Zowel Alex Coke als Frans Vermeerssen (die eerder samenspeelden in het
Willem Breuker Kollektief) brachten ooit een album uit met muziek van deze opvallende en vitale multi-instrumentalist uit de jaren 60 en 70.

Naast een gedreven en inventief improvisator (zo bespeelde hij meerdere saxofoons tegelijk) was Kirk ook een begenadigd componist van pakkende thema’s.
Ook saxofonist Bo van de Graaf is een groot liefhebber van zijn muziek, en zo werd voor een concert in het Nijmeegse podium BreBL de groep “Reeds and Deeds” samengesteld, met de buitenissig
improviserende ritmesectie Michiel Braam, Arjen Gorter en Makki van Engelen.

New JazzWorldQuest Featured Musician: Elliott Ranney - singer/songwriter

‘Music like an Island Breeze,’ best describes Elliott Ranney, a Folk-Jazz singer/songwriter performing finger style on classical guitar. His focus spans the genres of Bossa/Samba, The Cool School and contemporary Folk-Pop music. Ranney follows his bliss with original compositions inspired by Tom Jobim, Michael Franks, Tom Waits and Steely Dan, to name a few.
Apart from concert appearances, Elliott incorporates cover tunes and original compositions into his winery/coffee house/cafe show. He has an eclectic esoteric song list featuring well known artists. It’s not a juke box offering, but rather a careful selection of songs suited to Ranney’s laid back vocal and intricate guitar style.
Ranney’s two commercially released albums; an Aging Sailor’s Dream (2001) and Bellevue Shuffle (2013) are prime examples showcasing his variety of music he has gravitated to. In 2012, Inpartmaint, Inc re-released An Aging Sailor’s Dream (ASD) on the Rip Curl Records label based in Tokyo, Japan. November 19, 2015, a song from ASD, ‘A Good Life,’ was released on a compilation album titled HMV&Books Tokyo – Library Music Series “Sparkle.”

New JazzWorldQuest Featured Musician: Steven Blane - singer/songwriter

As a young boy in Jersey City, his grandma stood him on a table at a Knights of Pythias Talent Show. Singing “Delilah,” Tom Jones style, in front of that supportive audience left a profound effect on Steven.

Years later, when college was over, he plotted his escape to NYC. Once there, he auditioned around and miraculously got into a Broadway Show. He was a Gypsy who played guitar as sang a song. And he was a horse.
