UK/SOUTH AFRICA: Shabaka And The Ancestors -We Are Sent Here By History(2020)

The project was formed in early 2016, leading to their debut album later that year ‘wisdom of elders’; a document of sessions combining hutchings with a group of south african jazz musicians he’d long admired. His connection to the group was mandla mlangeni (bandleader of the amandla freedom ensemble), whom he’d flown there to play with over the past few years. ‘We are sent here by history’ is a meditation on the fact of our coming extinction as a species. It is a reflection from the ruins, from the burning. A questioning of the steps to be taken in preparation for our transition individually and societally if the end is to be seen as anything but a tragic defeat. For those lives lost and cultures dismantled by centuries of western expansionism, capitalist thought and white supremist structural hegemony the end days have long been heralded as present with this world experienced as an embodiment of a living purgatory.

SOUTH AFRICA: SPAZA-SPAZA(2019)

Conceived in the Mushroom Hour Half Hour lab, SPAZA is a band with no permanent personnel, with each lineup assembled for the express purpose of recording once-off improvised or workshopped material. For this, the initial salvo, SPAZA was put together from a group of musicians with individual and collective links to Johannesburg’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes. In the context of this completely improvised album, the term “spaza” not only refers to the gallery in Troyeville, Johannesburg where this project was recorded live (and in one take) in the autumn of 2015, but to South Africa’s thousands of informal neighbourhood stores. In South Africa, “spaza” has come to signify an entrepreneurial spirit, especially in the country’s black townships where economic barriers to business ownership mean that only a few can attain the status of formal business ownership. In the country’s socio-political context, spazas, usually operating out of converted garages, shacks or repurposed shipping containers, are also contested territories. They are sites of often fatal bloodshed where financially disenfranchised South Africans routinely mete out their frustrations on those they consider “foreigners” and “outsiders”. It is these outsiders who have come to dominate the spaza economy. However, spazas are also colourful, with their facades branded, styled and designed by each owner. They can become the nerve centres of social activity in the communities they occupy and are often stocked with an array of iconic South African brands and products, many of which are referenced in the track names of this album. Perhaps obliquely, there are musical sensibilities to be grasped at the mention of the term. “Spaza,” the recording, the location, the revolving ensemble - all evoke a spirit of independence, a D.I.Y aesthetic, a propensity for spontaneity, and, literally, a coming together of minds at the corner to shoot the breeze or let off a seriously considered prognosis.

SOUTH AFRICA: Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane-Closer to Home (2018)

Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane | Closer to Home

Closer to Home comes at a season in Sibusiso Mash Mashloane’s career where he wants to zoom into his social and musical identity. Being born in Mpumalanga Province, surrounded by Ndebele, Pedi and Swazi people and later moving to KwaZulu Natal, he observed that each society breathes its own character: “If that character is not embraced the significance of being part of it, is lost” says Mashiloane.

All the cultures he experienced have their own transitional, cultural practices, which gives birth to new societies of mixed cultures and traditions. You can clearly hear this in his album “Closer To Home”, which is a culmination of all the musical dialects and the characteristics of the communities he has stayed and shared with. It is however not a complete reflection, but a serious starting point, which he trusts to attain a better understanding and revelations through his studies and musical encounters.

About the choice of musicians that contributed to this music he says “these musicians all take pride in their identity and are not only driven by their music’s skill impressions but also by relevancy and accuracy.”

SOUTH AFRICA: Thandi Ntuli-The Offering (2018)

Thandi Ntuli | The Offering

Of her own music she says: “My journey in music and in life has always been an expression of conflicts which I experience in my everyday life. The conflict of an African woman in a Western world, a woman in a man’s world, a privately schooled underprivileged black girl who identifies with bits of many cultures and yet is concerned by the endangered nature of African heritage. My music is constantly searching for balance and a meaning in these conflicts, a release of this tension. But it is also a celebration of a unique cultural identity to which I belong.”
