JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023: Simon Denizart(France/Canada)-9-4 (Justin Time Records)

Simon Denizart

Nouveau single 9-4

Disponible chez Justin Time Records

CROATIA: Kristian Terzic-Kristian Terzic(2013)

Album Personnel:
Kristian Terzic - Piano & Keyboards / Marko Matoševic - Drums / Luka Veselinovic - Upright & El.Bass / Branko Sterpin - Trumpet & Flugelhorn / Boris Popov - Percussion / Alen Spada - Guitar / Vojkan Jocic - Soprano & Tenor Sax / Luka Zuzic - Trombone / Marko Ramljak - Violin & Vocal

“Solid compositions and powerful arrangements enhance the band’s bottom line. Essentially, Terzic casts a mark of distinction since many other efforts of this ilk either favor commercial potential or the respective musicians’ technical prowess. The keyboardist successfully fuses both of those factors into a set that has significant replay value.”

“Reverie at Schloss Elmau”
ACT 9624-2 (2014)
LAUNCHING THEIR NEW ALBUM
UK dates 11/12th FEBRUARY LONDON AND OXFORD
Duo
Celebrating the European launch of their new DUO album on the prestigious German label ACT long time collaborators pianist Gwilym Simcock and Yuri Goloubev navigate an intriguing route through jazz, chamber music and contemporary classical.
“It’s a masterclass in duet playing and a pensively pleasurable exploration of the points at which the jazz and classical worlds meet.” Metro
“Duo Art shimmers and dances with European art-music references, which surface in the elegant themes, the liquid movement of Simcock's improv phrasing, and Goloubev's astonishingly light-touch lyricism and cello-like purity.” The Guardian ****
"The interplay between the two is like musical telepathy". Observer 4 stars****
Gwilym and Yuri have long been fascinated by the expressive possibilities of their duo which started in 2008, at the Musica Sulle Bocche festival in Sardinia and was an instant success.
Their concerts allow them to navigate a route through jazz, chamber music and contemporary classical – their strong classical backgrounds allow them to take experimental risks and incorporate into both jazz standards and their own original pieces free improvisations and excursions into the culture of European music, often interpreting well-known pieces in unusual and unexpected ways that always intrigue the audience and excite their curiosity.

Gerardo Rosales - Síguelo (Challenge Records 2013)

"Everyone that knows my work can appreciate the evolution and changes I have made. Nevertheless, my musical line is clear and concrete; I’ve been influenced by other cultures, but my specialty is the salsa. I do have to make it clear that when I talk about salsa, I don’t mean the dance that people learn in a superficial way on dance academies. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, one of the countries responsible for the development and dissemination of this music in the world. I witnessed the birth and development of this genre. Cuba is the mother of what we call salsa, because the son, the mambo, the guaracha, the cha cha cha, the guaguancó and the pattern of the clave are the origin of everything. I have a collection of 5000 vinyl records, audio cassettes and historical documents that I keep close by; they are my treasure and the fundamental base of what I bring into the world. This album is the more danceable and spontaneous I have ever produced. The musicians involved in it have a very positive energy, full of talent, wisdom and spirituality, all contributing to their knowledge so that you have a quality product.

Black Host - Life In The Sugar Candle Mines (Northern Spy 2013)

Sometimes it can be a challenge to rise above the flood of interesting music available in the new-release (let alone reissue) coffers and bring a vibe to the table that’s robust enough to grab one by the throat, offering seamless introspection within past and present. Black Host, a New York quintet nominally led by in-demand drummer Gerald Cleaver, is an improvising ensemble prepared to do just that. Cleaver is joined here by pianist Cooper-Moore, alto saxophonist Darius Jones, bassist Pascal Niggenkemper and guitarist Brandon Seabrook on a program of eight original compositions that blend modern jazz, free music, psych, post-punk and electrified noise with painstaking detail and heady abandon. The historically obsessed might name-check Albert Ayler (especially the groups with pianist Bobby Few and guitarist Henry Vestine), the early ‘70s music of Norwegians Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal, or Gary Windo with Carla Bley, but Black Host present dynamic, incisive and utterly contemporary music. Life in the Sugar Candle Mines is the group’s first record – hopefully one among several – a reverb-drenched and incisive stew of rhapsodic piano, searing alto and fractured guitar over rhythms that are alternately chunky and airy, rendered with a “live” energy that cuts through the cones on your speakers.

Christine Jensen-Habitat (Justin Time 2013)

Montreal-based composer-saxophonist and bandleader Christine Jensen and her 19-piece jazz orchestra will release her highly anticipated sophomore album entitled Habitat, on October 3rd on Justin-Time Records. As a follow-up to her critically acclaimed and Juno-award winning album, Treelines (2010), Habitat expands on Jensen’s viewpoint as a composer and improviser. “Always a compelling writer, capable of strong lyricism combined with harmonic invention and plenty of narrative twists and turns, Jensen's music not only impresses on a first encounter, but reveals more with each and every listen.” (John Kelman-All About Jazz).

The David Ricard Big Band - Hey, I Know This Song! Vol. 1 ( Lesterbeat Records 2013)

Cartoon Composer Combines The Old And The Older To Create Something Totally New.
On his debut album, the Emmy-nominated composer, David Ricard, takes classical music’s greatest hits and mashes them up into iconic big band sounds.
Imagine if Tchaikovsky wrote Swan Lake during the swing era. What if Johann Strauss was not the Waltz King but the Samba King? How about if Bizet’s opera, Carmen, was composed during the swinging 60s?
Rather than being satisfied writing straight-ahead big band versions of the album’s 10 classical works, Ricard went one step further by using the distinctive arranging techniques of big band’s most recognizable hits.
Swing versions of classical music is nothing new. Big bands from Spike Jones to Brian Setzer have released magnificent offerings over the years. Ricard’s album, however, takes advantage of two previously missed opportunities. Firstly, there’s the mash-up concept. Second, while other big bands attempt to capture a whole classical work into a swing opus, Ricard focuses on the “hooks” of each orchestral masterpiece and ignores the less ear-catching sections. This results in the album having a highly-infectious, pop music quality to it.
Many listeners of this album will recognize the classical melodies; others will be able to identify the big band song being referenced. Savvy music lovers may know both. In any case, the result for the listener is the same: an involuntary exclamation of “Hey, I know this song!”
David Ricard -- whose credits include The Pink Panther & Pals, After Lately, Maya & Miguel and SuperNormal-- injects his well-honed sense of humor into each track on the CD.
Ricard, who plays bass on the album, got the idea for the album after being approached by a music library to write sound-alike big band tracks. “It sounded like a lot of work to be done at a high quality level so I passed on that gig,” says the L.A.-based composer. “I hate when you hear a generic song in a commercial, for instance, and you know what song it’s trying to sound like but, of course, it fails. But it started me thinking about how I could write songs that had the vibe of a tune but then took it somewhere totally new. I had already attempted a few big band arrangements of classical tunes but felt that they lacked something special. Then I remembered the old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups commercials. You know, “You got peanut butter in my chocolate!”/ “You got chocolate in my peanut butter!” And I started to realize that these two good-but not great-ideas (big band versions of classical tunes and iconic big band soundalikes) could be fused into one very interesting project that can stand alone as a neat record.”
The concept grew from there and by the time Ricard and his 18-piece ensemble went in to the studio in December 2012, the album had evolved into its own thing.
While adapting these classical melodies, Ricard pays homage to his favorite big band influences, such as Count Basie, Billy May and Quincy Jones.
The end result is an album of 10 in-your-face, high-energy tracks that don’t let up for a moment, daring listeners to keep up.
“I think this record is going to appeal to a wide range of music lovers,” says Ricard, “it’s not too jazzy, it’s not too stuffy. I think it’s a great balance and listeners, I hope, will sense all of the fun that went into writing and recording it .”

Mishka Adams - Stranger On The Shore (Candid Productions 2013)

Since graduating from London's prestigious Guildhall College of Music, Mishka has honed not only her vocal skills, but as is clear from this new album she has also developed admirably her compositional and arranging skills. Here she puts her indelible stamp on a hand picked collection of songs internationally know and loved. Here Star Eyes gets a pulsating Bossa Nova treatment, while the groovy Benny Golson classic Whisper Not and the poignant rendition of Stranger in the Shore emphasize the lyrics to great effect. Other highlights showcase Mishka's passion for the 'Great French Songbook' as she sings Sous le ciel de Paris in its native tongue and likewise Chico Barque's masterpiece Beatriz. Another landmark album from this Anglo-Filipina artist.

Ondanueve String Quartet - Boundary Line (2013)

Borders, either made of bricks and cement or just symbolic are sometimes battlefields but they are also creative labs of the art of living together. They are also soils in which seeds of future forms of humanity are thrown and grow (consciously or not). "

Zygmunt Bauman, Polish philosopher and sociologist.

Mankind has always had the need to demarcate its territory, to feel safe in a non-infinite hence controllable space.
Through an immaterial curve that is the "border", mankind has found a way to trace neatly and visually territories, populations and therefore different cultures.

The new project "Boundary Line" starts from this premise, then turn it completely, where the border is no longer a dividing line, but rather a meeting point where it is possible to have communication between different cultures in a neutral territory.

In "Boundery Line" the border is the perfect place to merge the stimuli coming from everywhere without a filter, making them their own, internalizing and reviving them through a new life while respecting their origins and every time filling their particular world, which remains essentially familiar.

"Art is not to represent something new but to represent the same thing with originality" - Ugo Foscolo

Sadao Watanabe - Come Today (Victor Entertainment Group 2013)

Sadao Watanabe has long had a split musical personality. He alternates excellent bebop dates with pop albums. Watanabe learned clarinet and alto in high school, and in the 1950s he moved to Tokyo, joining Toshiko Akiyoshi's bop-oriented group in 1953. When the pianist moved to the U.S. in 1956, Watanabe took over the band. He attended Berklee during 1962-1965 and had the opportunity to work with Gary McFarland, Chico Hamilton, and Gabor Szabo. However, throughout his career Watanabe has remained mostly based in Japan, where he is a major influence on younger players. He has recorded steadily through the years, most notably with Chick Corea in New York (1970) and with the Galaxy All-Stars (1978). Watanabe's bop records are inspired by Charlie Parker, and his pop dates by Brazilian-flavored music

Corey Christiansen-Lone Prairie (Origin 2013)

All About Jazz (C. Michael Bailey)
Guitarist Corey Christiansen has released two previous recordings on the Origin label in Roll With It (2008) and Outlaw Tractor (2010). Both were well received and featured Christiansen's ethereal playing, characterized by a deep reverb beneath a slightly overdriven tone. These recordings are uniformly fine, but generally lacked a thematic center

Jazz Society of Oregon (Deborah DeMoss Smith)
This album may be a little different, but the fun of jazz is giving an ear to something that’s not on the usual path. With tunes focused on the intense electric guitar and two keyboards, as well as the bass, drums and percussion, guitarist Corey Christiansen’s Lone Prairie is indeed a bit off the path, yet still on the prairie.

Louisville Music News (Martin Z. Kasdan Jr.)
Guitarist Corey Christiansen shines on his new album, which includes new renditions of the title track, "El Paso," and others from the folk/country canon, as well as three originals and Ennio Morricone's "Il Grande Massacro."

Grammy Award-Winning Record Producer Charlie Peacock Releases New Improvisational Jazz Album, LEMONADE, Available January 7th, 2014

A unique collection of solo piano improvisations from the producer of 2013 Year-End Best Listed and Grammy-nominated artists, including The Civil Wars, Holly Williams, and The Lone Bellow.

LEMONADE - pianist, composer, record producer and Grammy Award Winner Charlie Peacock’s collection of twelve solo piano improvisations is an unexpected, yet winsome next musical step after his much-admired 2012 Folk-Americana release, No Man’s Land. Paste Magazine’s Holly Gleason proclaimed No Man’s Land “a cocktail of Dust Bowl feels, Cajun beats and shuffles, raw banjos and fiddles, steel guitars that pool, and spacious arrangements. This is music of red dirt and high humidity, different worlds that share the same sort of soul.”
It’s no stretch that the producer behind the music described above, and that of Folk/Americana darlings The Civil Wars and Holly Williams, would share the same sort of soul found in solo piano improvisation. For Peacock, it’s all one soulful musical world. The producer/pianist did in fact produce three of Entertainment Weekly’s Ten Best Country Albums of 2013. However, he’s also the same musician that has recorded and performed with such top tier jazz improvisers as Ravi Coltrane, James Genus, Bela Fleck, Marc Ribot, Jeff Coffin, Joey Baron and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Perhaps all of this is why Electronic Musician wrote: “Charlie Peacock's life is like a game of musical chairs: he is constantly changing seats and trading places.”
“I was raised by a California-born, improvising trumpet playing father whose grandfather was a Louisiana fiddler. Maybe that explains a little of my ability to move fluidly between several varieties of American music, whether it’s rooted in Hank Williams or Miles Davis.”
LEMONADE is Peacock’s third recording in the jazz (beyond jazz) genre. His first, Love Press Ex-Curio (2005) was followed by Arc of the Circle (2008), a duet recording with saxophonist Jeff Coffin. Each recording reached Top 5 on the CMJ Jazz Chart and both provide plenty of clues to Peacock’s unique piano approach, now fully revealed on LEMONADE.
As The Nashville Scene put it, Charlie is a “Producer - renaissance man” and proudly makes Nashville his home. Or does he? One journalist, after hearing a Charlie Peacock piano solo from a previous recording doubted this in print: “Are we sure Charlie lives in Nashville?” Not only does he live in Nashville, he remains as Keyboard magazine says, “one of the most respected musicians in Nashville.”
“There’s a reason Nashville is called Music City. It’s about the music first here, and improvisation, whether it’s jazz, bluegrass, or rock related, is absolutely central to the music created in our city – a city full of world-class improvisers. My solo piano record and playing is hardly an anomaly. It’s simply my version of what friends Jerry Douglas, Vince Gill, and Andy Leftwich do in their own sphere of influence. I had my pivotal experience with Jarrett when I was seventeen. I’m hoping my record will spark imaginations and remind people that this is what musicians do – the music is inside us, and when we improvise, we are composing on the spot, real-time. I’m just doing my small part to tell that story, keep it alive. And if people dig what I do, I hope they will check out some serious mastery in pianists like Vijay Ayer, Uri Caine, and Brad Mehldau.
Short Bio: Charlie Peacock is a Grammy Award-winning, multi-format performer, composer, and record producer. Peacock's current production credits include AAA and Americana successes such as The Lone Bellow, Holly Williams, Ben Rector, Brett Dennen and "Misery Chain" for Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell featuring Joy Williams, from the soundtrack to the film, 12 Years A Slave.
