Tano Pumará: Incierto

The project to record the album arose during the pandemic with the idea of making a synthesis of a musical journey of many years.
The violin is the protagonist because it is the instrument that has accompanied me since I was 5 years old and, almost without intending to, the musical genres that were most present in my life began to appear: jazz, Argentine folk music, tango, Argentine rock. The result is difficult to classify within a musical genre, but these influences can be recognized.
Incierto, the title track, is a Tano Pumara original. The tune embodies Nuevo Tango (New Tango).

‘Noosa’ (4:59): The final track starts with a piano intro and samples. It draws inspiration from a psychedelic experience that turned out not the way it was expected. This also happened traveling far from home days before the pandemic outbreak. This unfortunate event put a stop on that journey.

Charles Gorczynski (bandoneonist, saxist, composer and of Colorlist, Redwood Tango) says this and sums it up best: “(sic)Trio is a contemporary jazz group that integrates widespread elements from Argentine tango and Scandinavian instrumental music. Their sound is free-flowing and impressionistic, focused on exploring melodies inside of carefully crafted rhythmic environments. Tango influence is clear with both the sound of the bandoneon and the melodic focus, but tango lives in the lifeblood of the music instead of taking precedence. Instead the direction is akin to other genre-bending trio jazz projects like The Bad Plus, Dawn of Midi, Little North, Tord Gustavsen, or Girls In Airports.”

Ramiro Pinheiro and Ana Rossi presents “Outra Era” (Fagner & Zeca Baleiro), the first single of their next album “Vivo” (2022).
Born in Argentina, Ana Rossi began her musical training there, playing the piano in municipal and provincial schools. In the study of singing as an instrument, she has been especially interested in the Voice Craft technique, in which she has embedded her own trajectory combined with other visions. She is currently a member of Coetus, UNA, Marcelo Mercadante and his Quinteto Porteño, BREU and Gafieira Miúda, among others.

Ramiro Pinheiro is a subtle and creative acoustic guitarist from Brazil who is also a talented songwriter. He was mostly self-taught at the beginning, learning the guitar by ear before attending the Conservatório Souza Lima in São Paulo. Pinheiro moved to Barcelona (Spain) years ago and he has been an important part of the local music scene ever since, working with a wide variety of jazz and Brazilian musicians.

Billboard Top 10 musicians and tango composer/educator team Ben & Winnie is masterful at taking the raw energy and complex interpretive pathways of the full tango orchestra and distilling them down to the intimate interpersonal connection of a duo performance. Whether tracing stylistic developments throughout the genre’s history with unique arrangements of traditional tango pieces or suggesting innovative musical disruptions with their own fiery original compositions, the duo’s music is always about human connection and inspiration.

With their latest album La Próxima Traición (to be released May 15th, 2020), Ben Bogart (bandoneon) and Winnie Cheung (piano) pay homage to tango’s tradition of revolutionary innovation at the pinnacle of their musical expression.  In the process, tango becomes the vehicle to transport audiences from wildly disparate walks of life to the musical common ground of the global citizen -- with a message to galvanize positive social change and climate awareness with a call to action to do everything we can to leave the planet in better shape than we found it.

Recorded in the heart of Buenos Aires at Fort Studios (the studio historically known for its role in the counterculture element of Argentina) and mixed and mastered at El Jardin del Furor, the album’s tracks range from traditional Argentine tango pieces of the 1920s, superbly stripped down and rearranged for bandoneon and piano, to the newest title track number composed specifically with Ben & Winnie’s piano, bandoneon, and banter-filled creative dynamic in mind.

La Próxima Traición could be translated literally as "the next treason” or “the upcoming betrayal" and the title speaks to Ben & Winnie’s attraction to the revolutionary nature of how tango has developed over time. The genre’s process of evolution has always been instigated by rebel artists breaking through the baseline. It is an aesthetic transformation via periodic creative ruptures in the paradigm of the time; artistic upheavals that often mirror cultural or political discord in society.

Ben & Winnie notes that current trends in tango are indicative of what is currently happening in Argentina, where the tango is getting a little rough, a little loud, a little heavy in the bass. Surface elements of Ben & Winnie’s music are resonating with what is new in tango, and what is being created in Argentina now. The time is right for the next traición.

The duo describes it as a ‘dumping out of the drawer’ to reorganize or declutter, socially, politically, and artistically.  “To us, the most important part is turning the everyday upside-down,” says the duo. “You take the drawer out and you dump everything. Not always just to throw everything away. You can sort it, you can reorganize it, you can take out the crap and put back what you need, or you can create a whole new system to organize. There are many things you can do ...but the one thing we have to do is periodically turn the drawer upside down.”

As artists, both have been deeply inspired by those giants of tango history whose work is featured on the CD, including Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Juan D'Arienzo. Though initially at creative odds with their contemporaries, each is now celebrated for having taken some social or musical element of the tango of their time and revolutionizing it.

“They embraced the tango they loved and then did something new, maybe even scandalous to it,” reflects Ben. "They were all courageous and unapologetic, and they initiated changes that were focused and piercing in their genre. Each believed in their path, and executed their beliefs with charisma and personality.  We want to do the same.”

That disorderly spirit of creation is the defining thematic thread stitched so skilfully through La Próxima Traición and is perhaps most explicit on the album’s title track. Penned specifically for the duo by contemporary composer and Indiana University professor Aaron Travers, “La Próxima Traición” is a piece that reflects their vision of a new tango sound for today. Ben & Winnie breathes easily in the traditional tango elements of the song, yet incorporate with vigor the new tango inspirations that inform the traición that is their latest work.

One of the many creative ways the duo has devised to make their tango a participatory collective experience, is to fit “La Próxima Traición” with optional parts for amateurs, young children, or beginning instrumentalists to join Ben & Winnie in playing what is a rather difficult piece. They endeavor to support and encourage musicians of all levels and ages to participate in tango, and this is one of their many efforts to showcase that support.

Connecting with their audiences on a deeply human level around the causes that are important to them is a central element of Ben & Winnie’s philosophy. Whether making conscious efforts on their tours to achieve a negative carbon footprint or raising funds for climate action and positive social change, Ben & Winnie always gives their all -- when playing for dancers and listeners who can attend their shows, and for those who cannot. With a mission to make tango accessible and to share artistic expression with people whom they might not otherwise encounter in life, the duo regularly puts on voluntary shows and educational workshops at prisons, schools, hospitals, dementia homes, and assisted living facilities.

“Ben and Winnie should not even know each other, but in fact we know each other quite well, all because of tango. We want to share this with audiences and bring everyone together -- children, seniors, Argentines, non-Argentines -- whoever you are.  We are in this "traición" together, whether you want it or not.  There are urgent and sweeping matters -- like saving the planet -- that require you to immediately leave the inertia you live in, and indulge in your own traición, now.”

Este es mi tercer CD como solista y muestra un acercamiento más ligado el pop, si es que cabe esa descripción al género principal que aborda mi agrupación que es el jazz.

It is a jazz album of diverse styles passing through swing, hard bop, fusion, ballad and funk dedicated in oblation and praise to Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is my third CD as a soloist and it shows a closer approach to pop, if that description fits the main genre that my band is playing that is jazz.

Nace en Buenos Aires, Martin Iannaccone viene de una familia de músicos y ha esta- do involucrado con la música desde muy joven. A la batería, la percusión y el bajo le siguió le violoncelo. La influencia de su padre Roberto Yanés, reconocido cantante latinoamericano y artista del sello CBS Columbia quien grabara con grandes figuras como Astor Piazzolla y Osvaldo Fresedo, lo indujo
a utilizar su voz como un instrumen- to más. Luego de completar sus estudios secundarios se muda a los Estados Unidos de América para estudiar música en el Miami Dade Community College. De regreso en Argentina estudia composición con Daniel Montes. En 1991
obtiene el primer premio en música popular/ Jazz de la Bienal Arte joven en Buenos Aires. Sus aportes como violoncelista en el campo del jazz contemporaneo de los florecientes 90s en Buenos Aires produjeron gran resonancia. En 2002 se muda a Alemania y desde en-
tonces vive en Berlin. Gracias a su capacidad para adaptarse a diferentes estilos mu- sicales ha participado en diversos proyectos, muchos artistas han confiado en su sonido ya sea con el bajo el violoncelo, la batería o el canto. Junto a el pianista y compositor Daniel Almada co-funda el grupo de tango electrónico "Tango Crash" este proyecto que fuera apadrinado por Joe Zawinul, produjo 4 discos y actuaciones en di- versos países. Desde el 2011 forma parte de la banda de la artista alemana Annett Louisan.

Born in Buenos Aires, Martin Iannaccone comes from a family of musicians and has been involved with music since he was very young. He played  drums, percussion and  bass  he was influenced by  his father Roberto Yanés, renowned Latin American singer and artist of the CBS Columbia label who recorded with great figures such as Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Fresedo, After completing his high school, he moved to the United States of America to study music at Miami Dade Community College. Back in Argentina he studied composition with Daniel Montes. In 1991 he obtains the first prize in popular music / Jazz at the Young Art Biennial in Buenos Aires. His contributions as a cellist in the field of contemporary jazz of the flourishing 90s in Buenos Aires produced great resonance. In 2002 he moved to Germany and  lives in Berlin. Thanks to his ability to adapt to different musical styles, he has participated in several projects, many artists have relied on his sound, whether it be the cello, the drums or the singing. Together with the pianist and composer Daniel Almada he co-founded the electronic tango group "Tango Crash", this project sponsored by Joe Zawinul, produced 4 albums and performances in different countries. Since 2011 he is part of the band of the German artist Annett Louisan.

Jorge Hernaez is the principle contrabassist with the National Symphony de Cuyo in Mendoza and an active composer with his works being performed and recorded throughout South America. In addition, Jorge has a growing body of work as an instant composer, playing free improvisation. His works have been recorded on CIMP and Cadence Jazz Records in the USA, SLAM Productions (UK) and La Gorda Records and NoSeSo Records in Argentina.  David Bajda is composer, and guitarist in Mendoza, Argentina. Of Slovian decent, David's approach incorporates South American and Eastern European influences. He is a dynamic composer, active in South America and a superb classical guitarist. His works have been recorded by state composer associations. David Haney studied composition for many years with Czech American composer Tomas Svoboda. He has been a member of The Society of Oregon composers and his works have been performed throughout North America. Bamboo Quartet is a instrumental band based in La Rioja, Argentina. Capella Andean Flutes Quartet. Performing instrumental music of great composers like Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Cuchi Leguizamón, Lyle Mays, Carlos Gardel, María Elena Walsh, Pat Metheny, Astor Piazzolla, among many others. "Reeds in Flight" is your first studio recording album.
Bamboo Quartet is a musical project of a Capella Andean Flutes band that produces their music only in the recording studio. Based in the Province of La Rioja, Argentina, they work on the production of their various recording projects, with subsequent digital diffusion, distribution and sale throughout the world.

The album axis is the sax/bass/drums trio constellation. It is the common denominator and its raw sound is what glues all songs together. The inspiration for the album/concept/texture its clearly Ornette Coleman, however the repertorie its not free jazz. Other influences that might be quoted are Tony Malaby, Reid Anderson or Fly Trio. The compositions clearly orbits the contemporary jazz, with some elements from pop and folk music.
