CANADA: Bill McBirnie - Flute Bits - September 2016



Grain of Sand was nominated in TWO categories for the 2016 TIMAs (Toronto Independent Music Awards).  Bill McBirnie & Bruce Jones - Extreme Flute is at the top of the listing in (1) the Best World and (2) the Best Instrumental classes!

Claire Chase is one of the most monstrous flute players…EVER to be!…She exhibits a deep commitment to her craft, and she is absolutely remarkable at what she does.  However, I recognize that this is NOT necessarily everyone’s cup of tea.  Nonetheless, she is conscientious and intensely disciplined at what she has chosen to do, musically (…and it is musical!…Just let your backbone slip!… :-)  Here is a short fragment (2:25 minutes) of an absolutely brilliant performance that is both raw and nuanced:
