"a nostalgia trip of traditional Cuban styles...it was a showcase
and testament to virtuosic skill..." - Rolling Stone
"With
our music we Cubans have exported more dreams and pleasures than with
our tobacco, more sweetness and energy than with all our sugar.
Afro-Cuban music
is fire, savour and smoke; it is syrup, charm and relief. It is like sonorous rum,
which brings people together and makes them treat each other as equals.
It brings the senses to dynamic life." - Fernando Ortiz
Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa are the most charismatic existing members of the world acclaimed Cuban band Buena Vista Social Club™. Portuondo
and Ochoa broke new ground by performing at the White House in 2015,
which marked the first time a Cuba-based musical act had played there in
over five decades. The Buena Vista Social Club™ also
recently concluded their 20th Anniversary Adios Tour in Havana last
month, but these two members will continue to be music ambassadors of
son, mambo, montuno and cha cha cha. Both Portuondo and Ochoa embark
together to select cities for a U.S. summer tour performing timeless
songs. Portuondo will also celebrate her 85th birthday with an expanded fall itinerary featuring musical director Roberto Fonseca, clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen, and violinist Regina Carter.
The great Cuban diva Omara Portuondo
has been continually performing in public since age 15. Her legendary
voice reflects a long, creative life of passion and music. While other
much loved Buena Vista stars like Ruben Gonzalez and Ibrahim Ferrer were
lured out of retirement, Portuondo has been singing professionally for
an incredible 70 years.
This
tour will be a grand fiesta that will take the listener on a journey
throughout Portuondo's long stellar career from her younger years to her
continual love of elegant cabaret, and the Buena Vista days right up to
the present with various tastes and flavours. It will be a musical
feast, full of piquant sabrosura.
The guitar and voice of Eliades Ochoa
became a worldwide symbol of Son Cubano, the traditional music of
Santiago de Cuba. His first performance was at the age of 11, and since
then he has participated in several projects and received numerous
Grammy® nominations and awards worldwide.
Ochoa will perform with his own group Grupo Patria.
The Cuarteto Patria, originally created under the Revolution times is
always evolving, and is not content with repeating ancient formulas.
Ochoa has invited outstanding musicians from Santiago's younger
generation to be part of this historic group including two trumpeters
and piano.
Through
their deep traditions and stunning musical personalities, 2016 will
bring us the Omara Portuondo & Eliades Ochoa Tour.
