The ninth annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, September 8, 2012 in downtown Silver Spring at the Silver Spring Civic Building at Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive. Silver Spring is located on the northeastern border of Washington, DC. The free outdoor program kicks off at 4:30 pm and continues until 10:00pm. Past headliners include Wynton Marsalis, Aaron Neville and Arturo Sandoval, among others.
“This year’s festival has something for everyone, and I invite jazz fans throughout the area to join us for what promises to be an exciting afternoon and evening of top-notch musical entertainment,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett. “This is the region’s not-to-be-missed musical event of the season.” This year’s headliner is Grammy™ award winning and Academy Award™ nominated Sergio Mendes.
Known for his bossa nova/jazz/funk musical style, Brazilian born Sergio Mendes rose to fame in 1966 with his hit “Mas Que Nada” produced by Herb Alpert. It was the first time that a song, sung entirely in Portuguese, reached the top 5 on the Billboard magazine pop chart. Earlier this year, Mendes was nominated for an Academy Award™ for Best Original Song as co-writer of "Real In Rio" from the animated film “Rio.” In recent years, he has collaborated with Will.i.am and The Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, India Arie, Justin Timberlake, Erykah Badu, and many others. Mendes’s CD “Celebration,” a compilation of his work, was released in May 2011, celebrating his 50 years as a Grammy™ winning recording artist, and his Gold and Platinum hits.
The festival begins with Elliott Levine, Bruce Swaim Quartet and Silver Spring native Marcus Johnson. The Silver Spring Jazz Festival was co-founded by Susan Hoffman, Montgomery County Department of Recreation and Marcus Johnson, successful jazz musician. “It was always my dream to produce a Jazz Festival and Silver Spring is just the perfect location to reach all of Metropolitan Washington. In 2004, our first festival attracted 8,000 attendees, which was well beyond our wildest expectations. The following year, we brought in Wynton Marsalis, the best of the best, and our crowds swelled to 25,000! Since then, we have been the marquee event in downtown Silver Spring and probably the largest free event in Montgomery County with audiences of around 20,000 each year.”
Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation – the Silver Spring Metro (Red Line) is two blocks away – and to bring a blanket and/or beach chair. Limited parking is available in the Wayne Avenue garage, the Town Square garage, and the garages on Bonifant Street, Cameron at Ramsey Avenue, and Cameron at Fenton. Food vendors will be onsite.
