CANADA, BC: Jazz on the Mountain festival falls short of expectations
“Giving it away for free is not part of the business model,” he said. “We will never do that but we will be looking at pricing for specific shows.”
When asked about his thoughts on the ticketed festival coming on the heels of a summer of free concerts in the plaza put on by the RMOW, Schwisberg said he didn’t want to comment. But he has noticed a general attitude that people in Whistler do not like to pay for music.“People are disinclined to pay for live music, and that tendency was a little (more) profound than we anticipated,” he said.Schwisberg said he’s amazed that people in Whistler are willing to pay more for dinner — something he sees as not having nearly the same lasting impression as a live musical performance.“So you and a friend are going to spend $60 on a couple of burgers and beers on a sunny patio, and that’s great — who doesn’t want a burger and a beer during a great day?” he asked. “You’re not going to take a picture of the burger of the beer and you’re certainly not going to remember it a week later. But if you each spend that $30 to come to a show like last night’s Spyro Gyra show… you are going to remember that concert and remember it next year.”
