Ontario, Canada: A capella, tango, big band music at Westben Concerts at The Barn

TRENT HILLS -Westben's Concerts at The Barn series promises to have audiences in the mood for a good time.

On Thursday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m., Westben welcomes the internationally acclaimed Swingle Singers. For more than four decades, this multi- Grammy Award winning ensemble of a capella singers from London, England has been dazzling audiences around the world with their arrangements of classical, jazz and popular music. Don't miss this unforgettable afternoon by a truly world-class ensemble!

Tango Boreal then presents a sultry evening of originals and Argentinean tangos on Friday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Join Quebec bandoneonist Denis Plante who appears with fellow musicians David Jacques (guitar) and Ian Simpson (bass).

On Saturday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m., Westben welcomes Canadian jazz legend Dave Young and his superb quartet featuring Kevin Turcotte (trumpet), Robi Botos (piano) and Terry Clarke (drums), with Young on the bass.

Having performed with a huge array of artists ranging from Oscar Peterson to Lenny Breau, Young has been an integral part of the Canadian jazz scene for over five decades. Young is a jazz educator at U of T, and a recent recipient of the Order of Canada.

On Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. the season comes to a resounding climax with Westben's annual Finale Fundraiser, In the Mood! Westben toasts the infectious fun of the Golden Age of the Big Band with Donna Bennett and the Brian Barlow Big Band. Having just performed with Aretha Franklin before 16,000 people at the Toronto Jazz Festival, Brian Barlow's Big Band has never been hotter. The Westben set list includes several of Barlow's brilliant arrangements of pieces from Ella Fitzgerald to Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and others. Barlow has even hand-crafted three medleys for Donna Bennett especially for the event.

Be sure to wear your dancing shoes, as there will be room to dance! Between sets, enjoy delightful dishes prepared by Windswept Catering, including several "originals" created especially for the event: Sinatra's Ensalata Caprese, Billie Holiday's Crab and Sweet Corn Cakes, and Que Sera Sera Quesadillas.
