USA: Steve Khan - Backlog (2017)

Backlog

On Steve's CD, ''Parting Shot'' (2011) Steve reassembled Eyewitness and set out to conjoin the looseness of their improvisations, while adhering to the tenets of Latin music and the all-important clave. ''Subtext'' (2014) was the title of Steve's next recording, and again, there was a subtitle in Spanish, ''Subtexto en Azul.'' On the album, Steve continued his explorations of the wondrous traditions of Latin music. Fans that enjoyed both ''Parting Shot'' and ''Subtext,'' will surely love ''Backlog''! ''Backlog'' of course, has a subtitle in Spanish, ''Asuntos Pendientes.'' On this album, really the 3rd in a series, Steve continues to expand the potential of the guitar in the context of Latin music, and here, the core group features: Rubén Rodríguez, Bobby Allende, Marc Quiñones, and joined for the first time by Mark Walker on drums. A series of old and dear friends, respected colleagues as guest artists added so much to the music, including: Rob Mounsey, Randy Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Bob Mintzer, and Tatiana Parra. In all, they perform Steve's arrangements of compositions by: Thelonious Monk, Greg Osby, Ornette Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson, and Andrew Hill. The recording features two gorgeous ballads: ''Our Town'' written by Steve' s father, Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen, and ''Emily'' (Johnny Mandel-Johnny Mercer). Perhaps the great surprise of the album is the incredible interpretation of Stevie Wonder's ''Go Home.'

USA: George Winston- Spring Carousel(RCA 2017)

Spring Carousel

Grammy® Award winning Pianist and multi-platinum selling recording artist George Winston set to release a Cancer Research Benefit Album, Spring Carousel.
Spring Carousel features a collection of 15 solo piano compositions written by Winston while in recovery from a bone marrow transplant for Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) at City of Hope, in Duarte, California, near Los Angeles. Proceeds from sales of Spring Carousel will directly benefit City of Hope. George Winston reminds music fans on his 14th solo piano album, Spring Carousel, that only one voice is required to be wholeheartedly inspiring. For Winston, that voice has always been solo acoustic piano. Upon hearing Winston's singular work on Spring Carousel, a depth of piano brilliance effortlessly sinks into one's soul, never leaving the listener eager for anything other than the next swirling song on the recording. Spring Carousel is the culmination of works composed at City of Hope during early 2013. From 59 recorded songs, 15 select works are now showcased on Winston s latest solo piano album. As with his previous recordings, including seven Platinum selling albums (Autumn, December, Forest, Summer, Winter Into Spring, Linus & Lucy - The Music of Vince Guaraldi, and Plains), Winston's studio recordings are all experienced-based. His season-themed albums come mainly from his childhood experience in Montana of the drastic difference in the seasons. And his releases Montana - A Love Story, as well as Forest and Plains, come primarily from his sense of the different topographies in Montana. Spring Carousel's setting is City of Hope, where Winston was given a second chance at life.

From The Toots Thielemans Tribute in Punta de Este, Uruguay, January 2017
'Hendrik Meurkens has long doubled successfully on vibraphone and the chromatic harmonica. Now, more than 25 years into his recording career as a leader, he stands as arguably the most fluid and fluent jazz harmonica player this side of the great Toots Thielemans...'  -  JazzTimes May 2016 - Philip Booth

'If harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens' estimable discography has escaped your attention, this album of straight ahead tunes shows his harmonica to be more than just worthy. The array of vocabulary and technical proficiency he exhibits is truly impressive.....'  -  Downbeat May 2016 - Kirk Silsbee

'...Harmonicus Rex is one of the purest bop inspired albums I've heard in a long time. There's a love for the music that comes through in every carefully crafted twist and turn. Hendrik Meurkens and his magnificent band have done their homework and prove to the world that "straight ahead" bop fueled
jazz is far from dead and is still open to new ideas. This is a stellar recording not to be missed.'
  -  Dr. Jazz - Doc Wendell

'Hendrik Meurkens...is the crown prince of the instrument....Harmonicus Rex demands our attention because it is a glorious album...'  -  JazzdaGama - Raul da Gama

UK: Portico Quartet -Knee-Deep In the North Sea(2017)

Knee-Deep In the North Sea

This debut by the critically-acclaimed Portico Quartet was Time Out/London's "Jazz, Folk and World Music Album of the Year" when it was released in Europe in 2007, and was subsequently nominated for England's coveted Mercury Prize in 2008. Newly remixed by John Leckie (Radiohead, Stone Roses, producer of Portico Quartet's subsequent ISLA), it is available in the U.S. for the first time. Likened to Steve Reich & Philip Glass, its resonant, trance-like sound is like music from the future.
