UKRAINE:Konstantin Kolesnichenko Quartet - Minor Differences (2017)

Konstantin Kolesnichenko Quartet | Minor Differences

musicians:
Paul Seedorenko - guitar
Mikhail Lyshenko - organ
Dmitriy Lytvynenko - drums and bongos
Konstantin Kolesnichenko - diatonic harmonicas

The recording you are holding in your hand is what it feels like when jazz and blues climb into the same bed and make passionate love. Konstantin Koleshnichenko and his quartet perform in that area where two of America’s quintessential art forms become inseparable... at least for the duration of this recording.

I first heard Kolesnichenko perform on his 2016 release entitled, Hypnotized. I became an instant fan of his music and have revisited that recording many times in the past several months. Naturally I was thrilled to find out that he had a new release in the works. Upon hearing Minor Differences it felt like a very organic progression for this Ukrainian harmonica player. This new release makes a handsome companion piece to Hypnotized.

An exceptional musician, Kolesnichenko leads his talented quartet down many of the same roads that made so many of those great 50’s and 60’s Blue Note Records such timeless classics. This all instrumental affair conjures up the aural experience of bachelor pad cool. Minor Differences is brimming with maturity, sophistication and soul. Lord knows we could use some of that here in 2017.

UKRAINE: Konstantin Kolesnichenko-Hypnotized! (2016)

Konstantin Kolesnichenko | Hypnotized!
"Konstantin Kolesnichenko is one of my favorite living harmonica players playing some of my very favorite music. I am a huge fan of both his playing and his artistic direction to the point of jealousy. I love him and this disc and want MORE!"
Jason Ricci

"This wonderful CD takes the listener on a musical journey from vintage Jazz to inspiring South American rhythms and gentle swings.
The 7 songs are well crafted instrumentals led by Konstantin Kolesnichenko's soulful and lyrical harmonica. The arrangements are creative and the bandleader's harp playing is masterful. Throughout, his harmonica sounds like a horn adding so much to the band’s ensemble feel. A stellar performance.
***** FIVE STARS"
Pierre Lacocque
Bandleader
Mississippi Heat

"Hypnotized"...think Brother Jack McDuff, Booker T & William Clarke all rolled into one with Konstantin Kolesnichenko's unique twist on it."
PT Gazell

From the linear notes:
"You are holding in your hands an album of the leading Ukrainian harmonica player and bluesman Konstantin Kolesnichenko.
I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to Konstantin's music for the first time. Konstantin is a harmonica player who plays instrumental music on an amplified blues harp with a huge tone and impressive technique. How could I stay indifferent? I was waiting for a long time for such musician to appear in Ukraine. But now looks like the wait is over.
To be honest, for me "Hypnotized" is an unprecedented event on Ukrainian music scene! An unusual mix of Jazz, Jump Blues, and West Coast Blues with Konstantin's harmonica soloing! Not to mention the masterful execution of rhythm section and brilliant solos of guitarist Paul Seedorenko and keyboard player Mikhail Lyshenko.
I love Konstantin's album as a whole - it's a great sounding record! I was very impressed with the selection of songs. Bright original compositions naturally coexist with the rare songs of Leo Parker, Baden Powel and Willis Jackson.
If you love good music with a swing feel, you can't go wrong with this CD!"

Vadim Neselovskyi - Music for September ( Sunnyside 2013)

More wonderful players seem to come into the jazz scene all the time. This is indeed a rich time to be a jazz musician or a jazz fan. From my vantage point as a bandleader and educator, I am fortunate to see pretty much all the up and coming talents as soon as they start to get noticed. But there are new stars, and there are new stars. It is a very rare occasion when a truly original player and writer emerges from the crowd. The very rst time I met Vadim Neselovskyi, I knew he was his own man. He made an appointment to see me and presented a demo recording of his band. One listen sold me, and soon after I managed to see his group at a small club. The music was so new and fresh, I couldn't imagine where he had gotten all these ideas. Naturally, I didn't just let this go by, so I asked him to be in my band for the next few years. During that time, Vadim contributed a number of original compositions, some of the most important of our repertoire. And, I don't think I have ever met an improvisor who has more surprises in store. Every Vadim solo is a new exploration.

Now I am really pleased that Vadim has recorded a CD of his own music. I would have expected him to put together a band, perhaps, but he has chosen a solo project with a powerful concept. His background in classical music and his individual take on jazz composition has produced a fascinating fusion of classical and jazz traditions. Every piece is captivating and when I listen to the whole recording, I quickly get lost in the music and it's like time stops. Vadim is truly a genius, and a player I feel very fortunate to have gotten to know. You can't ask for a better "" rst record"" to provide the chance to get to know this great artist.

Frank Haunschild & Vitaliy Zolotov -Night Train (Acoustic Music Records 2012)

Two magicians of the strings, two remarkable careers: The young Ukrainian, who chose Cologne as his home base, was not only a sideman for Dee Dee Bridgewater, but additionally a proud prizewinner of several international guitar competitions. The Bonn-based professor Frank Haunschild is, for his part, a successful composer, author and duo partner for a diversity of artists.
This time, the “Jazz guitar teacher of the nation” joins the shooting star of the jazz guitar scene, Vitaliy Zolotov. Together, these two dexterous intellectuals demonstrate their love of the genre with an instrumental album that taps into a fascinating selection of acoustical and electrical instruments to reveal all the facets of sophisticated guitar music. With stylish own compositions and attractive Beatles interpretations, this congenial duo demonstrates their exhilaration at playing, a subtle sense of dynamics and almost intuitive interaction. This makes “Night Train” a genuine masterpiece of modern guitar jazz. Two magicians of the strings, two remarkable careers – now on a single album. Acoustic Music Records

Kiev Acoustic Trio - Moment.(2011)

What may have happened? Three musicians with huge experience may have got tempted to record something fabulous, and would have been right in their way. What did happened in reality? Three musicians with huge experience recorded something transparent, subtle, and humanly simple – something that majority of young ones could not do. Just because there is simplicity which can be saturated, to which you come through hundreds of melodies and thousands of hours of rehearsals and performances. This is the case when you are not looking for the easiest solutions, you just avoid excessive movements. As a result, music becomes not simply refined, it acquires the touch of coolness and aloofness. Something that may easily turn into ice. This is a different case, however. Observerness, as one of the main colours of the album, is there indeed, but it is warmed up by splashes of unconcealed emotions, and sometimes even real passion. It also forms an intriguing mixture of meditation and admiration, and which one is winning is difficult to say. And you need not. Having listened, everyone would decide for themselves...
Pavlo Shepeta – piano
Serhiy Makarov – double-bass
Olexander Berehovsky – percussion
