Klezmokum: “Klez-Evergreens Project Extended” 2015

This year Klezmokum celebrates 26 years of performances and 8 recordings!
By popular demand,  “Klez-Evergreens” project has been extended with many new pieces added for the next concert season: the first half of 2015.
Klezmokum and Klez-Edge (a quartet instrumental version of the band) have a wealth of material from many years of existence which deserve greater listening and performances for the public..

Some of these pieces were only performed a few times and have been re-arranged in a new format for this tour.  In addition there is some great music by composers that use Jewish modes (scales), also arranged for this new project including  the poignant film piece Theme from Schindler’s List by John Williams, a new composition entitled Judaic-Indian Song based on a lovely theme by jazz composer Wayne Shorter, the new Jews & Gypsies Suite II, (a follow up from the first Jews & Gypsies Suite--from our Le Dor Va Dor CD recording in 2000), modern arrangements of songs from Fiddler On the Roof , and great song standards from Harold Arlen (Hyman Arluk).  Added to the program will be modern version of the classic klezmer pieces Yikhes (Ancestors-1911) Yiddish Blues (1919),  Flatbush (Brooklyn) Waltz by klezmer composer Andy Statman, and classic klezmer dance pieces like Araber Tanz, Bolter Bulgar, and Bay a Glezele Mashke. Included will be the Klezmokum classics In the Footsteps of the Bratslav,  and Burton Greene's composition Moldavian Blues and another recent composition:  The Struggle Can Be Enobling.  Held over most likely from the first project will be Ketsad M’rakdin and the Chassidic piece Zhuritze Chlopotzi.  This promises to be a program of broad spectrum, with a wide variety of musical colors, contrasts, and rhythms inspired by many cultures with links to Judaism.
As the great Dr. Martin Luther King once stated: “It’s either one world or no world.”

Announcing the latest member of Klez-Edge and Klezmokum:
Saxophonist Alex Coke.
Alex has an extensive history in jazz and klezmer and fits right into our group with some great energy!

Music and Ethical Responsibility
by Jeff Warren

Discussions surrounding music and ethical responsibility bring to mind arguments about legal ownership and purchase. Yet the many ways in which we experience music with others are usually overlooked. Musical experience and practice always involve relationships with other people, which can place limitations on how we listen to and act upon music. In Music and Ethical Responsibility Jeff Warren challenges current approaches to music and ethics, drawing upon philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s theory that ethics is the responsibilities that arise from our encounters with other people. Warren...

Billie Davies News Update

BILLIE DAVIES
BillieDavies-drums-2
“The new kid on the block in New Orleans!'”

Billie Davies (born Billie Goegebeur, December 10, 1955 in Bruges, Belgium) is an American female jazz drummer and composer best known for her Avant-garde jazz compositions, as well as her improvisational drumming techniques which she has performed in Europe and in the US since the mid-nineties. (Wikipedia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billie_Davies
  • Her 2012 release of “all about Love” solidified her position as a professional jazz musician.  This recording of standards and original music, charted #1 in CMJ Jazz College Radio Charts for ‘top jazz add’ in new albums and went on to stay there for 4 weeks.  “all about Love”  was also very well received in Canada where the album ended up in the Top 10 on three different !Earshot Jazz charts. (Available at the Louisiana Music Factory)
  • September 2013, Billie Davies was nominated for the top Jazz Artist award from the 23rd Annual Los Angeles Music Awards.
  • In October, 2013 Billie released “12 VOLT” which garnered national and international attention. CJ Bond, JAZZ MUSIC (an online jazz journal), wrote the following… “12 VOLT” features exclusively original compositions of Billie Davies, revealing yet another formidable creative talent in Davies' impressive artistic arsenal; making this an important CD for Davies, since it adds the crucial tyne of 'composer/arranger' to her sterling artistic fork, augmenting fearless innovation, and superlative drumming technique as well. (Available at the Louisiana Music Factory)
  • November 14, 2013 she received the “Jazz Artist of the Year” award on November 14, 2013.
  • Late March 2014 Billie, and her recording/producer husband Mike, moved from Los Angeles to New Orleans and is now ready to present her show to the world.
Her guitar player on “12 VOLT,” Daniel Coffeng, who hails originally from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, moved to New Orleans in November 2014 to rejoin with her, and brings a new, unique technical fluidity and energy to the world of post bop and avant-garde jazz improvisation.

"Davies is not countering the modern jazz movement so much but rather stripping it down to its essence. When listening to Davies play, it’s easier to think of her not as a drummer but a tonal painter who swipes brushstrokes with her drumsticks." (S. Victor Aaron)
"Davies is mostly an autodidact whose natural talent, relentless, explorative spirit and multifaceted experiences have led to an innovative approach to jazz." (Hryar Attarian)"With a background in Classical and Jazz and a lifetime of musical experiences in jams, performances, recordings and music production, the listener is treated to jazz inclinations within her ensembles that bristle with cutting-edge freshness." (C.J. Bond)

Please let me know whether BILLIE DAVIES provides a musical platform you can work with for either/or procuring booking, representation, national and/or international touring, promotion or finding possible label representation.

DAVE BASS TAKES IT TO THE EAST COAST WITH THE RELEASE OF NYC SESSIONS

Bass will celebrate the release of NYC SESSIONS with several east coast shows. On February 12, he will be joined by Karrin Allyson, as well as Harvie S, trombonist Chris Washburn and drummer Richie Morales at Kitano in NYC. On Valentine’s Day, he’ll share the love by sitting in on Allyson’s gig at Scullers in Boston, where they’ll perform at least one of her tunes from the album. And on February 20, the Dave Bass Quintet, featuring Greg Abate on alto sax and flute, will perform at the Narrows Center for the Performing Arts in Fall River, Massachusetts, where they’ll share a very eclectic double bill with singer/songwriter Vance Gilbert.
