World Music Mix: Ghostwoods(Australia)-Album: My Neon (4000 Records, 2023)

World Music Mix: Ghostwoods(Australia)-Album: My Neon (4000 Records, 2023)

Ghostwoods(Australia)-Album: My Neon (4000 Records, 2023)

Ghostwoods-Saturnine

Led by musician/composer James Lees, the languorous, atmospheric music of Ghostwoods has been gradually blinking into existence since the lockdown winter of 2020. Isolated and with time to kill at his home in Mt Nebo/Jinibara Country, James turned to composing and tinkering on the piano with the sparse and spooky fragments that would become the first collection of Ghostwoods compositions.

Created at Mount Nebo-based recording studio Wild Mountain Sound, with much-loved Brisbane producer Jamie Trevaskis, the first compositions were released on the Dark Moon EP in late 2021. In 2022, work continued on a full-length album, entitled My Neon, presaged by the singles ‘Terminal Bliss’ (Oct 2022) and ‘Brighter Now’ (Dec 2022).

Like all of the music in this first wave of Ghostwoods compositions, My Neon retains its piano-led provenance, fleshed out by synths, percussion and contributions from key collaborators Mark Angel (electric guitars), Karl O’Shea (bass), Andrew Saragossi (flute/clarinet/sax) and Rohan Seekers (keys/synths).

“The more I work on Ghostwoods music, the more I understand what it is actually about,” says Lees. “Having always been used to working with singer/songwriters, I am very concept-based and the instrumental setting of Ghostwoods subverted and challenged that for me. As we do more recording, and more live shows, the music and the project itself is teaching me what it is about. It’s such a fascinating and satisfying process.”

My Neon was created with much less planning than typically goes into a James Lees project. Particularly in the studio, Lees is usually meticulously prepared when approaching a session but challenged himself to be more free and leaving space to be playful and experiment.

As with many instrumental pieces, the narrative/theme/meaning is left to the listener to manifest. There are shared intrinsic links between the album’s six tracks, some even unwittingly inhabiting similar musical motifs in their early stages. After being carefully shaped and chiseled in the studio, those shared compositional affinities linger in the tracks and connect them as a whole even with each tune having a distinct stylistic identity.

“The title My Neon is actually the words Mt Nebo autocorrected – I sent this to a friend on a text message, and liked the mistake!” muses Lees. “It came to mean how I see the music in my mind as I strongly experience synesthesia with sound and music. It felt like a way to convey the colours of this sometimes rather dark music, and that is reflected in the artwork too which also features my house in Mt Nebo – my little sanctuary away from the world, and where the music is created.”

World Music Mix: Sanfeliu(Australia)-Album: To Absent Friends(4000 Records, 2022)

Sanfeliu-To Absent Friends

Sanfeliu(Australia)-Album: To Absent Friends(4000 Records, 2022)

Sanfeliu(Australia)-Leopardi

Sanfeliu’s sophomore album To Absent Friends is a collection of songs and sound-collages about the people that make us who we are: friendships, relationships based on the free sharing and exchanging of care, nurture, pleasure and knowledge in different times and places.

Like each friend, each song presents different patterns, and a different relationship or exchange model: some friends you see every week, some every summer, some sporadically, some regularly, but they all share a focus on self-reflection, awareness, cooperation, collection creative pursuits, shared passions that bring you together.

Similarly to friendships, these songs show an interest in change, growth, transience, willingness to embrace change and to grow. Some pieces have a clear pop-song structure with verse, bridge and chorus. Others have a ballad structure, and rely on the repetition and contrast between vocal and instrumental parts. Some are entirely built on repetition, whereas others explore development and change, with slowly shifting harmonic sequences.

“In most of the pieces,” says Sanfeliu, “working with very minimal rhythmic and melodic motifs and presenting these across both piano and subtle synth layers helped me integrate the writing into something that allowed for more complex arrangements, whilst feeling still natural, seamless, organic.”

The album’s opening track, ‘To Absent Friends’, is a simple note addressed to all our dear friends: perhaps a letter, or a postcard, a message that travels through space and place between oneself and another, bridging that distance and using it as a strength to build a process of active exchange and communication.

Several of the songs in the album refer to actual people: friends, relatives, writers, philosophers, thinkers and activists that have been influential in Carles’ life.

For example, ‘Leopardi’ is dedicated to the 19th century Romantic poet Giacomo Leopardi, possibly the founding father of emo-core music/poetry, and draws heavily on his own lyrics.

‘El Rey y la Reina de los Desamparados’ is dedicated to Kurt Cobain and its lyrics are an adaptation/mechanical translation of his diaries.

In contrast with Sanfeliu’s debut album (Flores – Colores), To Absent Friends has perhaps a brighter sound, and more uplifting songs with a clear pop structure, whilst continuing their exploration of melodic variety from different musical traditions.

Recorded at Moon Room with Nell Forster and mastered by Marly Lüske at Alchemix Studios, several friends also joined the creative and recording process: Isabel Torres plays flute on 4 songs, Paco Johnson-Cash contributes guitar and lap-steel guitar on 2 songs and Nell Forster herself contributed sound-collaging, drums and percussion.

To Absent Friends tracklist:

1. To Absent Friends [3:22]
2. Leopardi [5:11]
3. Lonely Village [3:57]
4. Bicycles [6:04]
5. Digital [2:30]
6. El Rey y La Reina de Los Descastados [8:11]
7. La Maga Fina [2:47]
8. Grassy Patch [5:40]

Concludes First U.S. Tour on June 29th
Australian Performer to Appear at NYC’s The Green Room 42
shem.gif
(New York City, NY) – Australian-based Brazilian singer-songwriter Juliana Areias wraps up her first U.S. Tour on Friday, June 29, with a salute to 60 years of the bossa nova at The Green Room 42, an upscale cabaret club serving New York City’s theater district. Drawing on traditional Brazilian bossa nova rhythms, Ms. Areias performs a distinctive style of Latin Jazz which has made her a hit down under.

She will be joined by a Brazilian jazz ensemble which includes Oriente Lopez on piano, Jorge Continentinoon flute and sax, Itaiguara Brandãoon bass, and Samuel Martinelle on drums. Her show highlights a blend of original songs from her internationally acclaimed “Bossa Nova Baby” CD plus a selection of exclusive arrangements of bossa classics and samba hits.

Born and raised in Brazil, Juliana Areias began her music career in Europe before moving to Australia. It was her all original CD “Bossa Nova Baby” that catapulted her to fame less than two years ago. Featured on Australia Day 2016, the CD received multiple music award nominations and earned regular air play around the world. Her Bossa Nova Baby Showis filled with original tunes as well as classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Mas Que Nada,” blending jazz, pop, funk, ballad, and tango, all drawing on infectious samba rhythms.

Ms. Areias has performed at many major venues around the world including the famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand, The Sydney Opera House in Australia and Beco des Garrafas, the legendary jazz club in Rio de Janeiro.  Her first U.S. tour which began in Florida and ends in New York City marks the launch of her “Bossa Nova Baby” CD in America. In mid-June, she performed at New Jersey’s popular Bickford Theatre to an enthusiastic audience of bossa nova fans.

“I’m looking forward to appearing at New York City’s Green Room 42 with such a talented group of musicians,” said Juliana Areias. “Bossa Nova is my essence as a person, my original impulse as a singer and my life-soul-heart’s pulsation and it is an honor to share it with audiences around the world. Touring the United States has been a thrill and it has touched my heart to see my fans have as much fun as I do at each show.”

Joining Ms. Areias for the finale of her U.S. tour will be a talented ensemble of jazz musicians. Multiple Grammy-winning pianist Oriente Lopez came to New York from his native Cuba in 1993 and has collaborated with many artists including Paul Simon, Regina Carter, and Paquito D’Rivera. Jorge Continentino was born in Rio de Janeiro where he studied flute and saxophone. Since moving to New York 15 years ago, he has become best known for his collaborative Latin music group Forro in the Dark. The Brazilian guitarist Itaiguara Brandao is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and has become one of the most sought-after Latin and World Music artists, touring and recording with musicians such as Romero Lubambo, Robin Eubanks, and Paquito D’Rivera. And drummer Samuel Martinelli has worked with many top jazz musicians including Claudio Roditi, Alcione, Hendrik Meurkens, Nilson Matta, and Marcus McLaurine.

Sludge Party | Sludge Party

Anna Joy Gordon- Baritone Saxophone
Aviva Endean- Bass Clarinet
Justin Marshall- Drums and production
Recorded by Justin Marshall
Mastered by Naomune Anzai

Its a bird, its an egg, its Sludge Party! ..the anti-heros of swamp tango, ready to rip hearts out and replace them with musical cigars and shiny-cranky honk fuzz that tastes very fine, sweetly smokey, and reminiscent of your grandmas bottom drawer put through a coffee grinder and sprinkled in the back carriage of the last train to....eh...hang on. Its music for your ears and it was made with baritone sax, bass clarinet and some trashy percussion. 3 musicians sharing a love of broken grooves, music concrete and other worldly sounds.

AUSTRALIA: Andrew Scott Quartet - The Brightest Minute

The Brightest Minute

Bebop lives in the hands of these four musicians dedicated to the American musical traditions of the 1940s and 50s. Recorded live off-the-floor in a Toronto studio, this recording demonstrates that spontaneity and creativity can easily materialize when fine musicians with shared sensibilities join forces on a fertile set of traditionally-based material. Reminiscent of Barney Kessel's work with Hampton Hawes or Jimmy Raney's output with Sonny Clark, Scott focuses largely on single-note lines placed over a swinging piano trio for impressive results. There is no doubting the authenticity and deep commitment to the tenets of tone, taste and good time that all of the musicians evidence here. Following up on recorded ensemble work done with Harry Allen, Randy Sandke, Gene DiNovi, Dan Block and Jon-Erik Kellso, Scott has assembled an ensemble of his colleagues for this outing that includes his longstanding trumpet partner Jake Wilkinson, heard here on piano. The result is a relaxed and swinging blowing session with just enough familiarity in play for everyone to stretch out in comfortable musical surroundings.

UK/PORTUGAL/AUSTRALIA: Caravela-Caravela(2017)

Caravela are an Afro-Brazilian quintet with members from Portugal, South America, Australia and the UK. Their music is an exploration of the communal traditional and spiritual music of Lusophone countries like Brazil and Cape Verde approached with a contemporary groove and feel. Caravela shine a light on traditional rhythms and styles and reimagine them with a jazz attitude of improvisation. Blending influences like Baden Powell, Mayra Andrade and Lionel Loueke, Caravela’s exploration of Afro-Brazilian music on their debut EP is not to be missed.

Opening track ‘Verde Água’ is built on an ijexá rhythm from Bahia in the north east of Brazil, a spiritual style often used at a candomblé ceremony. The lyrics explore that spirituality and feeling of purity and honesty. The track builds on the likes of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso’s use of the rhythm, bringing ijexá right into the 21st Century.

‘Na Terero’, literally meaning on the terrace, is a batuque style piece from Cape Verde. Traditionally a communal call and response style sung by groups of women on the terrace of a house to share and support them with their problems. The style is a powerful symbol of female emancipation as it was banned by the authorities. Caravela’s piece builds on the percussive rhythm with soaring vocals sung in creole that discuss the value of keeping these traditions alive in the modern world.

‘Maraguês’ is a maracatu style track from the state of Pernambuco in Brazil. Often used as a carnival rhythm in the region, Caravela again reimagine the rhythm into a modern context, with Portuguese lyrics over a tight groove that discuss the feeling of belonging and exploration, a reflection on the band’s approach to their music.

Troy Roberts is a New York City based Australian saxophonist who maintains a busy performance and recording schedule with some of the greatest jazz artists of today. He’s a regular member of both The Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts Quartet and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts’ ‘Blue 5’, and is also the newest member of Joey DeFrancesco’s new quartet, ‘The People’. Roberts’ 7th release, Tales & Tones is an acoustic quartet adventure, featuring a powerhouse rhythm section comprised of his long time collaborator, Venezuelan born pianist Silvano Monasterios, along with two of the most important names in jazz today; Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts on the drums and Robert Hurst on acoustic bass – both of whom bring more than just their jazz royalty to Roberts’ original compositions and arrangements. The tone of this record ranges from hard swinging, to pensive at times, while casually unwrapping various tales via the musical conversations amongst four great minds.

“Whilst it’s not common to display virtuosity, it’s even rarer to be wonderfully creative while doing so. But the rarest of all gifts is to have a unique voice; a sound that is unmistakably your own, Troy Roberts has this gift. He amply demonstrates that it’s possible to pay homage to the great tenor players of jazz and still create a fresh approach that leaves the listener always in anticipation of what he’ll come up with next.”
- James Morrison

“While jazz is so strongly identified as swing, it is nice to see the next gen carving out their sound and ideas. Roberts, along with his well-equipped ensemble, is certainly up to the task - creating a jazz record that employs great playing and abundant ideas. Roberts, though young in age, certainly has an arsenal of abilities under his belt, and has the makings and foundation of a lasting great saxophonist. Versatile in style, with a strong grasp of yesterday and today, he is a force to be reckoned with no matter the setting. He is more than one to watch, he is one to follow closely.”
- JazzTimes Magazine
