USA/THAILAND Kengchakaj-Lak Lan (2019)
Lak Lan (ลักลั่น) derives from a Thai word that can be translated as juxtaposition, dichotomy, or paradox. Although these qualities can be seen as incongruous, eccentric, or confusing, the concept of Lak-Lan opens up room for an exchange of dialogue - a gap for creative opportunities; a temporal moment to investigate new possibilities between spaces. Lak-Lan serves an impetus to unify ideas that are seemingly opposite, define new directions, and provide meaning to Kengchakaj (Gheng/chAH /kad) Kengkarnka’s (Gheng /ghan/kAH) voice as an artist. His compositional practice is rooted in African American derived rhythms infused with the aesthetics of Thai music. These compositions investigate themes of contradiction in identity, thoughts, and feelings - elements he has adopted, captured and expressed through improv

Synopsis:
The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra combines crossover magic with one of the most honored symphonic works in the repertoire for their next two performances on Friday, August 3 at 7PM and Saturday, August 4 at 4PM in Prince Mahidol Hall.
The concert begins with the works of American performer and composer Adam Rapa. A dynamic star of the crossover trumpet, Rapa has become widely known for the excitement, energy and enthusiasm he brings to stages around the world. His music is both technically brilliant and accessible without loosing innovation and the power of a beautiful and pure trumpet sound. Critics have hailed his work as “a blast” and as “musical extravaganza”. Rapa will perform original compositions that bridge the gap between the pop and the classical worlds.
On the other hand, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 sits comfortably for many dacades as one of the beloved symphonic pieces in the world. As a traditionalist Brahms used his formidable technical skills to craft expressive yet strongly classical works without the need for external influences.
Here is a chance to see and hear the old with the new! Carefully managed by the brilliant and long-time guest conductor Dariusz Mikulski.

THAILAND: Natasha’s brand of jazz
THAI jazz singer and songwriter Natasha Patamapongs is a regional powerhouse in her musical genre. Last year, AllAboutJazz.com writer Ian Patterson called her “an undeniably talented singer, brimming with confidence and a bubbly personality”.
VirtualMalaysia.com added: “Her sweet and clear voice brings the jazzy numbers to a new level. She has such depth, substance and panache that it’s hard to believe that she is only 25.”
Natasha is best known as the lead singer of Thailand-based jazz band Mellow Motif. As one of the founding members and main driving force behind the band’s success, she is responsible for the band’s arrangement ideas, production, artistic direction and public relations work.
She is one of the few jazz personalities to represent Thailand on the global stage today, including at Hua-Hin International Jazz Festival (2009), Singapore’s CHIJazz Festival (2009), Singapore’s KinestAsia by Timbre (2010), Malaysia’s Miri International Jazz Festival (2010), Indonesia’s Asean Jazz Festival (2010-2011), and this year at China’s Nanjing International Jazz And World Music Festival.
Performing highly inspired arrangements of jazz standards, Brazilian music and original compositions, she captured the hearts of non-jazz listeners and jazz aficionados in and out of the country.
In 2009, the Thai media described her as one of Bangkok’s Top 20 People To Watch and she was hailed as Thailand’s most “phenomenal musician” in the making.
As a solo artiste, Natasha enjoys collaborating with top jazz musicians across the region. They include Denny Euprasert, Michael Veerapen, Lewis Pragasam, Saxman Koh, Haruya Kibata, Valtinho Anastacio, Bob James and Roberto Menescal.
Natasha will perform at 10pm in Alexis Bistro, Great Eastern Mall, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, today and tomorrow. Call 03-4260 2288.

Thailand: Making Bangkok the 'city of jazz'
By Kitchana Lersakvanitchakul/The Nation
Established this year at the initiative of Foundation Jazz NL in the Netherlands, the International Jazz Festival Alliance Foundation has Thailand's Santi Wongsawat as its chairman, and he's busy getting ready for "Bangkok City of Jazz", an international jazz conference and showcase that's taking place next month. It's an event that he hopes will lead to Thailand becoming one of the jazz hubs of Asia."There are just a handful of established jazz festivals in Southeast Asia. Indonesia's Java Jazz is the biggest because its promoter used to organise the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands so Indonesia has really benefitted from that. The Hong Kong International Jazz Festival is a major event and Japan is a very big jazz market with lots of festivals though none of them are internationally prominent," says Santi, who is also the director of Samui International Jazz Productions and the founder of the Samui International Jazz Festival.
"All that other countries know about Thailand, is that our Monarch is internationally acclaimed as the King of Jazz.
"Yet we do have a jazz scene in our country. We have a jazz curriculum and instruction at the universities, which have produced many excellent jazz students for more than seven years. Our jazz musicians compare favourably with foreign musicians. What we haven't done is to build up a network for our jazz musicians that allows them to get experience in the field outside the country. The best way to start supporting them is by hosting for this jazz conference. It provides a forum for those who are interested in music, jazz professionals and jazz promoters to share their thoughts and to work together," he adds.
Santi shrugs off the criticisms that Thailand's jazz festivals have featured mainly local pop and rock artists playing jazz as support acts to a few imported jazz acts.
"Sure, it's happened at the Hua Hin, Samui and Bangkok jazz festivals. Mostly that's because our event promoters put the emphasis on mainstream commercialism and the sponsors focus on large audiences.
"We had real jazz festivals a few years ago but we weren't getting the audience numbers we needed to make it pay. The truth is that we have a gap between jazz music and the audience. The years go by and the number of enthusiasts doesn't increase because we're not exposing listeners to different styles. And the media are not seriously interested in supporting the genre," Santi says.
"Bangkok City of Jazz" consists of two parts - a conference focusing on the business aspects of the industry and a jazz showcase with artists from 12 countries.
"Thailand has the capacity to be a jazz music centre in Southeast Asia. The foundation's goal is to build up a strong network, to promote jazz and to support young talent. We also aim to share experience of musical knowledge and performance with musicians or artists outside the country.
"For new talent, the foundation can help to subsidise their performances at music festivals in allied countries. A showcase stage is priced from Bt100,000 to Bt1 million. Our allied countries have their own organisations that support and subsidise new talents too. The foundation's members are event promoters, music label owners, recording studio managers and the media.
Taking place a the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, the conference opens on September 16 at 9am and covers 12 topics.
Speakers include Alexander Beets and Koert Ligtermoete from the Netherlands, Peter Lee from Hong Kong, Caroline Chia from Canada, Thomson Jazz from Singapore and Thailand Anant Lerpradit.
Organiser of the Amersfoort Jazz Fest Edward Dijxshoorn will also talk, as will Lodewijk Bouwens from Foundation JazzNL and Santi himself.
The showcase on September 17 will feature pianist Peter Beets from the Netherlands, the Irene Atman Trio from Canada, the Blazin Quartet from Netherlands, Ori Dakari from Israel, and the Changton Quartet and Aswin Quartet from Thailand.
"Due to our Thai hospitality and Bangkok's facilities and infrastructure, I'm confident that Bangkok has potential to be a jazz hub in Asia," says Santi. "The success of the foundation is based on real collaboration."

Thailand: Hua Hin Jazz Festival
The annual Hua Hin Jazz Festival continues to grow in both popularity and professionalism, drawing visitors and musicians from Thailand and across the globe.
Multiple stages, many of which are located on the beach, feature local and international talent in this beautiful seaside town that goes all out to welcome visitors. Car parking, shuttle busses, food stalls, games, and elaborate decoration are all part of the convenient and festive atmosphere of the Hua Hin Jazz Festival, put on by the residents and business of Hua Hin.
All performances during the three-day Hua Hin Jazz Festival are free and continue from 15h30 until midnight.
No wonder this “Royal Town” is sometimes renamed “Jazz Town” when its streets are packed with music lovers of all ages, who gather to enjoy the best of jazz from both international and Asian musicians.
Hua Hin is approximately 220 km from Bangkok and is noted for being the country’s first beach resort discovered by royalty and nobility in the post war years when the only feasible way to reach its golden beaches was by steam train.
