JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: The KUHtrio(Austria /Czech Republic)- Old Souls

The KUHtrio(Austria /Czech Republic)- O Samba Boemio / Old Souls

Composer: Edi Koehldorfer
Label: ATS REcords
Website
In autumn 2018 Edi Köhldorfer (guit), František Uhlíř (b) and Jaromír Helešic (dr) were engaged together for a jazz festival in Styria / A.
During the rehearsals for this evening it was already clear that not only was the musically extraordinary happening here, but that the “vibes” were also right. After a brilliant concert that was frenetically celebrated by the audience, it was decided not to stop at a “one-nighter”.In autumn 2019 the new band presented itself to an enthusiastic audience as part of a 2-week tour through Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. After the tour, the trio went well into the studio and was able to release their first CD “Old Souls” in summer 2020 and present it live on a tour in D / CZ / A in the autumn afterwards. The music of “the KUH trio” is characterized on the one hand by the compositions of Köhldorfer and Uhlíř and on the other hand by the special sound, which is characterized by Köhldorfer’s versatile playing on electric and acoustic guitars. The legendary swing by Uhlíř / Helešic is complemented by excursions into Latin and funk grooves and there is even room for African….the KUHtrio Live on YouTube

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: Frantisek Uhlir(Czech Republic)-Album: Story of My Life

Frantisek Uhlir(Czech Republic)-PART 3 – ÚSTÍ – BRNO – PRAHA
 / Prolog Born to Future

Album: Story of My Life
The year 2020 is a significant date for me – I celebrate my 70th birthday and by coincidence, my father František, a bandleader, composer and pedagogue, would live to be 100 this year. This is why I have invented a little unusual present to this anniversary for me but primarily for the pleasure of the listener and fans of not only jazz music.
I wrote a suite called Story of My Life where a crucial role plays the number seven from my seventies. In addition to the Prologue, it is further constituted of seven musical parts which describe my life and my musical path and are tailor-made for seven excellent jazz players. All single musical movements are supplemented by photos illustrating my life.
Musicians: FRANTIŠEK UHLÍŘ – bass FRANTIŠEK TOMŠÍČEK- trumpet, flugelhorn PŘEMEK TOMŠÍČEK – trombone ANDY SCHOFIELD – altsax SUZANNE HIGGINS – tenorsax STANDA MÁCHA – piano MAREK URBÁNEK – drums

World Music Mix: Konstantin Nikolaev(UK)-6:59 / Album: One Minute To Seven (2020)

Konstantin Nikolaev(UK)-6:59
Composer: Konstantin Nikolaev
Album: One Minute To Seven (2020)

“One Minute To Seven” is a surprising album for many reasons. First in line comes the excellent quality of original compositions and arrangements. Various styles, rhythms and genres are brought together under one creative roof by Konstantin Nikolaev a COO of a London based IT company as he presents himself. He sings with warmth and feeling about life, love, and family, giving voice to a rainbow of emotions. Konstantin plays all of the instruments, he wrote the lyrics, and then recorded the entire album. From the first to the last track, this one-man band album is highly enjoyable.

Gabriel Bismut & Maurizio Minardi Quartet (France/Italy)- Le Coq Baroque
Composer:
 Maurizio Minardi
Album: Le Chat Brel
Label: AMA recording
Year of release: 2020
“Le Chat Brel” is a reference to Chabrol and to the cinema of the new wave, coupled with the expressiveness of Jacques Brel and the elegance and carefree nature of a feline. The passion for the cinema is indeed omnipresent in their original compositions, which oscillate between a light humor and a strong intensity, while remaining, like a film of the new wave, sincere and without artifices.

World Music Mix: Julien Bigorgne(France)-Album: Monades

Info about song/album:: Monades is the first record of the French jazz flautist Julien Bigorgne. Passionate about traditional Turkish, Indian and African music, Julien Bigorgne has composed 14 instrumental pieces, a bit like the Orientalists, borrowing from these traditional musics their colors and rhythms while reinterpreting them. A long work of maturation gives to the compositions a contemporary character that stands out from the clichés too often conveyed by "World Music".

Alternatively on the transverse flute and the oud (the Arab lute), Julien Bigorgne is accompanied by Shankar Kirpalani on double bass and Camille Petit on piano with whom he has shared many collaborations over the last fifteen years.

Throughout this musical discourse of more than an hour, in which improvisations are almost absent, the titles of the album are marked by the obsession to propose melodies that are simple to hear, holding the attention long after listening ; we will see in this approach a heritage of popular traditional music.

Carried by an omnipresent minimalism, the melodies are pure, self-sufficient, indivisible, embracing the philosophical concept of Monades.

This approach of course pays homage to the great Orientalists such as Erik Satie, whose influence is explicit when listening to the title “Glasnost”. But the disc is also sprinkled with more contemporary melodic references such as the “Noire Iridescence” waltz in reference to the accordionist Daniel Mille or the tortuous rhythmic constructions of the titles “Io” and “Entrelacs” which put us on the path of the double bassist Avishai Cohen.

Beyond the trio formula that forms the backbone of the album, the string orchestrations “Ligne de fuite” and “Lahar” punctuate the album, reinforcing the omnipresence of a melodic and cinematographic music.
If the record gives the impression of a long suite with a mastered architecture, some pieces break this order, such as “Fungi”, a short improvisation on the alto flute, a sort of unstructured and atonal parenthesis in a nod to the flautist Magic Malik.

The Monades disc can be listened as an exotic concept-album, a tribute to traditional music tinged with jazz, pop and image music.

The Monades disc is published by the label LEM (Laboratoire d'Exploration Musicale) with the catalog number LEM07.

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: Ramiro Pinheiro(Brazil/Spain)- Quatro Ventos

 Ramiro Pinheiro(Brazil/Spain)- Quatro Ventos

Album: Sentido
Label: Fresh Sound Records

Gabriel Amargant [Clarinet]
Ramiro Pinheiro [Guitar]
Horacio Fumero [Double Bass]
Nico Correa [Drums]

Quatro Ventos, a sublime song composed under the sign of spiritual beauty, performed with grace and lyricism by guitarist and composer Ramiro Pinheiro and his magic band.

Pinheiro, acoustic bassist Horacio Fumero (replaced on two tracks by electric bassist Rodrigo Balduino) and drummer Nicolas Correa form the core trio for this set although there are guests on every selection. The leader composed or co-wrote (with various lyricists) all but two of the nine selections.

Sentido begins with “Quatro Ventos,” a pretty and soothing melody that is filled with inner heat. Pinheiro’s classic acoustic Brazilian guitar plays the melody, clarinetist Gabriel Amargant (who recalls Paquito D’Rivera a little) builds on the mood, and the blend between clarinet and guitar is quite beautiful.” Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian [Allmusic.com]

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: ITALY: Manuel Muzzu-3-ree(2020)

If life were easy, it wouldn’t be worth living, right? Those battles we fight day to day, be them personal or not, are what push us forward, and someone who knows that better than most is Italy’s own Manuel Muzzu. With a disability that may have left some unable to chase their musical dreams, Muzzu decided settling was not an option. Today, he has three albums to his name, including ‘3-ree.’

Manuel Muzzu began his life shortly after The Beatles impressed the world with ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ in the summer of 1967. Perhaps being born that close to a classic album is the reason he found music so young. By 12-years-old he fell in love with the bass guitar despite a disability to his right hand from an incident six years prior. In an effort to put his disability behind him, Muzzu worked around the clock to make playing the instrument he loved so.

With that, Manuel Muzzu developed a unique way of playing that led him to where he is today. And that is a revered jazz musician, composer, and session player with well over 25 years under his belt and three albums to show for it; ‘The Right Hand’s Miracle,’ ‘ New Stories Old Hands,’ and ‘3-ree.’ Those who enjoy the style of jazz with a big dose of passion are welcomed to take part in his musical journey now. All three are available on his official site.

“I worked hard on my technique to play like a normal person because the passion is stronger than destiny.” – Manuel Muzzu

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2020: Switzerland/USA: Florian Arbenz & Greg Osby (Switzerland/USA) -Album: Reflections Of The Eternal Line

Florian Arbenz & Greg Osby (Switzerland/USA) -Album: Reflections Of The Eternal Line

Two masters: Florian Arbenz(drums, percussion) and Greg Osby(saxophones) delivering a symbiotic dialogue stretched over known boundaries. It’s not free jazz according to definitions but rather a journey they took together exploring new sound paths. A work of freedom and precision altogether inspired by the intricate graphical intersections painted by Stephan Spicher . Florian Arbenz moves from percussive heights to impressionistic, subtle textures, changing tempos weaving unexpected sonorities . Greg Osby is right there at the right moment filling spaces, climbing to high registers, at times playful or ecstatic invoking sacred chants punctuated by colorful gongs that gives a spiritual edge to the composition. Expect the unexpected with these two bright complementing talents.

NORWAY: TERJE RYPDAL-CONSPIRACY (ECM 2020)

A new ECM studio album and a programme of new music from Terje Rypdal is cause for celebration. On Conspiracy the great Norwegian guitarist seems to reconnect with the wild inspiration that fuelled such early masterpieces as Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away, Odyssey and Waves, exploring the sonic potential of the electric guitar with both a rock improviser’s love of raw energy and a composer’s feeling for space and texture. Keyboardist Ståle Storløkken, who contributed to Terje’s Vossabrygg and Crime Scene albums is an ideal co-conspirator, perpetually thickening the plot with his own intuitive feeling for complementary sound-colours. Conspiracy also marks a welcome return for Pål Thowsen, whose subtle, detailed drumming was last heard on ECM with Arild Andersen’s 1970s groups. Rypdal’s best band in years is completed by gifted young bass guitarist Endre Hareide Hallre. Conspiracy was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher and Terje Rypdal(ECM)
