Reeds & Deeds is a one-time happening around the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
American jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk played tenor saxophone, flute, and many
other instruments. Renowned for his onstage vitality, during which virtuoso improvisation was
accompanied by comic banter, political ranting, and the ability to play several instruments simultaneously,

he wrote numerous beautiful compositions, such as "The Inflated Tear", "A Laugh for Rory", "Many
Blessings", "Vertigo", "Limbo Boat" and "Gifts and Messages". The way he approached music, combining tradition and renewal,in a way like Charles Mingus did, inspired many musicians in the US and The Netherlands.

Frans Vermeerssen did a whole project around Kirk's music back in 1995, resulting in his quintet's famous album One for Rahsaan.

Austin Jazz Workshop's 2009 season on Kirk featured Alex Coke performing live and recording Mystery Note. For this date, Coke, together with fellow reed player Bo van de Graaf  assembled an all-star band wihich includes a passionate rhythm section of bassist Arjen Gorter, drummer Makki Angels and pianist Michiel Braam.

Honouring one of the great American jazz musicians, The Reeds & Deeds project refers to a 1963 album recorded by Kirk, who’s 80th birthday is this year.
